My terrible US education immediately went to WWII reasoning but I forgot Japan and China were having it out before Hitler made his moves in Poland.

The spy theory is a belief I long held. Not necessarily that she was a spy, but that the Japanese thought she was a spy. Here's a pretty good podcast that did a round up of information and witness statements that point to the same conclusion.

The problem with the internet is that it’s full of debunkers.

A blogger says that he found a copy of the crucial photo (the basis for the History Channel docu) in a Japanese book published in 1935. This rather contradicts the claim that the photo depicts Earhart in 1937.
