Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano Eyed to Join Tilda Swinton in ‘Snowpiercer’ Director’s Monster Movie

Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Kelly Macdonald and Bill Nighy are poised to join Tilda Swinton in “Okja”, a multilingual monster movie from “Snowpiercer” director Bong Joon-ho, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

Details surrounding the project remain vague, but it is said to feature a Korean female lead and a host of English-language supporting actors whose scenes will be set in New York. Lewis Pictures is producing “Okja” which is expected to start production early next year.

Looking forward to this.

Bong Joon-ho + that cast + monster movie = :hmr:.

The Host didn't really work for me, but dude had Snowpiercer in him, so I'm down.

Bong's Monster Film Nabs Huge U.S. Cast

By Garth Franklin Tuesday November 10th 2015 01:11AM
Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Bill Nighy and Kelly MacDonald have joined "Snowpiercer" helmer Bong Joon-ho's Korean monster movie "Okja" which Netflix and Plan B are co-producing.
The film is one of the first features in Asia to be backed by Netflix which is expected to launch in South Korea in 2016. Talking about the project, Bong tells Variety that the film has a monster named Okja but he's not that scary:
"It is a bulky animal, but with a mild and kind spirit. The film is about a warm friendship between a country girl and a brute with stories. To me, the crazy world surrounding Okja and the girl looks more like a monster. I want to depict the two characters' bizarre journey and adventure across the tough world in an original fashion."
Bong confirms that he has both complete creative freedom and a bigger budget than that of "Snowpiercer" which had a $40M budget. The film is currently in pre-production ahead of a shoot that will begin in April next year and span locations in Korea and the U.S.

A wee update.

Netflix announced that principal photography began yesterday on its feature film Okja in Seoul, South Korea.

From director Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer, The Host, Mother), Okja is produced by Plan B, Lewis Pictures and Kate Street Picture Company, and stars Tilda Swinton ( Snowpiercer, Doctor Strange, Hail, Caesar!, Moonrise Kingdom), Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, Nightcrawler, Everest) and Paul Dano (Love & Mercy, 12 Years a Slave) in a bold, global adventure.

“With Okja I want to show the beauty that can exist between man and animal, and also the horror between them,” said Director Bong.

Okja was written by Bong and Jon Ronson (Frank) and follows Mija (Seohyun An), a young girl who must risk everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend – a massive animal named ‘Okja’.

Joining the cast are acclaimed actors from around the world, including Devon Bostick (The 100), Lily Collins (To The Bone), Byun Heebong (The Host), Shirley Henderson (Anna Karenina), Daniel Henshall (The Babadook), Yoon Je Moon (Mother), Choi Wooshik (Set Me Free) and Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead). Okja will be shot in South Korea, Canada and the US, in English and Korean.

Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Lewis Taewan Kim, Dooho Choi, Woo-sik Seo and Bong Joon Ho are producers on the film. Okja is a Plan B, Lewis Pictures and Kate Street Picture Company production.

Okja will premiere globally on Netflix in 2017 and will also have a limited day and date theatrical release in the US.

It sounds so sweet, I can't wait! And such a great cast! I wonder why tilda has such an interest in Asia lately. Oh well, it'll be great to see woo-sik seo

I love Bong Joon Ho's style, I'm watching Memories of murder tonight. This sounds awesome

Having watched The Host last year I'm more looking forward to this. This guy should have directed the new Godzilla film. The Host was a better Godzilla film.

When it says "shooting the film in english and korean" does that mean they will shoot two versions of each scene? One version with korean dialogue for asian markets and another version with english dialogue for english markets? If so that is really cool. Ive heard of this being done, but its not something that seems to be done a lot.

That's what Netflix did with Crouching Tiger II, unless I'm mistaken. An English cut and a Chinese cut.

I think the film has characters of different nationalities and that they will be speaking their own languages.

Swinton will play boththe head of the corporation and her twin sister, Gyllenhaal is a zoologist and Dano is an animal activist trying to expose the corporation’s dastardly dealings. Esposito will play Swinton's character's right-hand man.

Gyllenhaal Keen On Bong-Joon Ho’s “Okja”

Jake Gyllenhaal has been out doing press for Tom Ford’s “Nocturnal Animals” recently, but the actor made headlines a few months ago for his elaborate attire which he sported whilst filming “Snowpiercer” director Bong Joon-Ho’s new film “Okja” alongside Tilda Swinton.
The Playlist sat down with Gyllenhaal this week and asked him about “Okja” to which he excitedly explained how he and the Korean filmmaker had long been planning to work together but couldn’t find the right vehicle until now:
“We tried for a decade to do something and then we were meeting up about another project, another thing he was producing. We were sitting in New York maybe a year and a half ago, maybe a little more. And I said, ‘What are you working on?’ And he tells me, ‘I’m drawing these drawings for a movie I’m thinking about doing’ and he shows me this picture of this… creature and this little Korean girl next to the creature.
I asked, ‘What is that?’ ‘I’m thinking of making a children’s movie.’ ‘Is there a part for me?’ And he was like, ‘Hmmmm, I think maybe. Let me get back to you.’ And then he was like, ‘There is a part for you.’ I said, ‘I don’t care I’ll do it. I don’t even need to read it.’ And then I read it and it was so great. He’s like, ‘It’s this doctor and he’s a mad man and he has an animal show.’ And I was like, ‘I’m already in!'”

Ahn Seo-hyun plays lead character in the film which was shot in Vancouver, New York and Korea.

Joon-ho tells EW that he would prefer it if people didn’t refer to Okja as a “monster movie” since he says the titular creature is “a very shy and introverted animal. It’s a unique animal that we’ve not seen before.”

In this new look at the movie, we see a storyboard of the climatic sequence where Lily Collins’ character, Red, races onto the streets of Manhattan. Joon-ho also tells EW,

“Red is part of a group of animal rights activists that figure into the story,” teases Joon-ho, who filmed in the Financial District. “On Wall Street, it’s the heart of capitalism,” the director notes. “On the surface is a story about an animal, but it’s essentially a story about capitalism.”

I can easily see this turn into a media firestorm in the political world.
