The 98th Annual Academy Awards

Any blockbusters coming in 2025 that could served as the Dune 2 of 2026.
Wicked For Good is a possibility. Any others?
Wicked For Good and Avatar 3 will most likely be the blockbuster representation next year.
Avatar 3! I KNEW that I was Forgetting one!
THANKS!

I was looking through the upcoming blockbusters and that was the only other one that stood out to me besides Mickey 17 (which, do we really qualify that as a "blockbuster"?). But again, horror. If Nosferatu couldn't get a nomination then I wouldn't hold out for 28 Years Later.

Yeah it'll be tough because we still dont give horror its due at the Oscars. I can see it get something at the BAFTAs.

Speaking of which, since this next Oscars will introduce the Best Casting award... What are some categories you want this show to have?

For me its:

Best First Feature
Best Stunts/Mocap Performace
Breakthrough Performace (or Best Young Performer)
Best Sci-Fi/Horror
Best Comedy

And I would probably remove the shorts.

It won't happen but aside from Best Visual Effects, I would love for the Fantastic 4 to be nominated in Best Picture and Best Casting. Also for Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm to receive her 2nd Oscars nomination.

i don't really watch a lot of these Oscars nominated movies so I'm not invested (well aside from those Pixar/Disney movies). A lot of the nominated movies for Best Picture just don't appeal to me. Anora looks fun though, i just watched the trailer yesterday and Conclave reminds me of Assassin's Creed for some reason. I just look at the list of nominations and winners and go. I did watch Dune Part Two and The Substance before the awards season.

I'll wait for Avatar 3 to come out on streaming in 2026, and I still haven't seen
Wicked, to think about For Good.

I alway Liked the shorts category.
If we got rid of the shorts,
Nobody in the general audience would ever hear about them.
I don’t think that’s a good thing.

Maybe I'm a joyless, miserable person, but I frankly cannot stand the musical numbers they force down our throats every year. And why did we have a tribute to James Bond in a year when there wasn't even a James Bond movie? There's so much time wasted on stupid ****.

If they'd simply announce the categories and get rid of all the excess fluff, we'd be wrapped up in under 3 hours. Just need the right host to bring levity (i.e. Conan).
Yeah I was confused why there's a Bond tribute. Like I can't imagine them doing a tribute for the Mcu simply because its the Oscars.

They're fine, I just never understood why it's still there other than to acknowledge those awards have been around since the 30s when the majority of the show is centered around rewarding full-length features.

I feel the shorts could have a stronger impact in something like the Indie Spirit Awards but I dunno.

Out of all of those I think Best Stunts is the most necessary and I do think that'll be introduced in the near future. Best Comedy/Horror/Sci Fi would be nice to see but I don't think they'd compartmentalize them like the Globes do. Best First Feature and Best Breakthrough Performance would be interesting but I feel like there'd be a lot of hostility towards those from the "it's (veteran actor)'s turn to win" crowd in Hollywood, even though Mikey Madison just bucked that trend.

But does anyone in the general audience even care about the shorts now? Either live action or animated. I feel like the only time people recognize them are if they're like, Pixar shorts but I don't even think they attach those to the beginning of their movies anymore (I think Incredibles 2 was the last time). I don't think it'd be too controversial if the Oscars moved the shorts to a non-televised category. Also short subject documentary if I'm being honest.

Yeah I was confused why there's a Bond tribute. Like I can't imagine them doing a tribute for the Mcu simply because its the Oscars.
If 2028 is ABC's last year broadcasting the Oscars before a streaming service takes over then I could definitely see Disney arranging an MCU tribute to coincide with Iron Man's 20th anniversary.

Maybe at first but I think it's definitely worth having and I think the Oscars would be fine with it too. Just like how they give the shorts an Academy Award and most people who get them are first-time filmmakers, they can do it with new rising stars and filmmakers who do full length features. And BAFTA and the Indie Spirit Award both have them.

If they had done it this year, I feel like it would have looked like this:

Best First Feature
Didi
The Piano Lesson
Problemista
Woman of the Hour
Kneecap

Breakthrough Performance
Mikey Madison - Anora
Clarence Maclin - Sing Sing
Nell Tiger Free - The First Omen
Aaron Pierre - Rebel Ridge
Monica Barbaro - A Complete Unknown

And while Mikey and Monica are already in the main acting categories, the Oscar nominees have always overlapped like how Flow was in both international feature and best animated.

Brady and Mona wrote and directed another film coming out later this year.

A musical set in the 1770s. Lawd.

Didn't expect that announcement so soon but it's not a surprise. I'm glad they locked him down. I'd love to see him get a little weirder with it and bring back some of the old Late Night gang like Pimp Bot and
M********ing Bear next time. :o

I agree.

Conan was dipping his toes into the Academy Award waters. He should go all out next year.

This might be the second smartest hosting decision that the Academy has made in years- the first being getting Conan in the first place. I still don't watch these awards shows, but Conan is infinitely more interesting to watch than the likes of Jimmy Kimmel. I still think bringing back someone like Billy Crystal or Tina Fey and Amy Poehler would work, too.

No need for other candidates. It's the Conan era now. And should be for years to come.

As long as he didn’t bomb I figured they’d offer Conan the hosting job again.

Fey and Poehler are definitely a possibility since they've been great each time they hosted the Globes but Crystal hasn't hosted in 13 years and even then he was a little past his prime. I don't think he'll come back to host.

Kimmel does a serviceable job and I wouldn't be against him coming back but he was getting a little stale. Conan by comparison has a much more laid back schedule so he can really give it his all when it comes to hosting.
