Bought/Thought August 19th, 2009

Yeah... Spider-Man Noir is the only one I read... and it was pretty good. :up:

Daredevil Noir was just aaaaaaaiiiiiiiight. It's the only complete one I've read. The first issues of Luke Cage Noir and Punisher Noir were pretty good.
 
I've heard some of the NOIR books are alright, but I struggle to find the point. Apparently they are for people who wouldn't touch a NOIR story, like some of Brubaker's works like CRIMINAL or INCOGNITO or even some of Bendis' pre-Marvel work unless they had vague trappings from Marvel heroes. It's a "yeah, but why?" sort of franchise. But, at least some people enjoy them.

What next? MARVEL SHAKESPEARE?
 
I like them trying new things, the wizard of oz was ****ing excellent.
 
It really was, looking forward to the next series. Though I may trade wait on that one
 
WIZARD OF OZ worked because it was a straight adaptation of the tale, with modern art and decent promotion. It wasn't...I don't know....X-WIZARD OF OZ with the X-Men in the key roles like FAIRY TALES.
 
Some of those fairy tale stories were pretty good too. Spider-Man as the spider god in africa was paticularly well done. Don't knock experimentation, if it doesn't fly no big deal but I love them experimenting with the medium a bit.
 
The Noir series are basically just "what ifs" to me. (shrugs)

Well, it wasn't just the modern art as much as the art really personified the story and tone of Oz better than anything I've ever seen try to do that.

To me, "experimenting" would be having a creative team with at least modest hype and pull create a brand new franchise, it is hyped up the wazoo at least 1/10th what the typical issue of NEW AVENGERS is, and it is given two years to find it's audience regardless of sales, because, GASP, Marvel is a multi billion dollar industry that is bigger than even PLAYBOY and one measly comic won't make them have to sell their clothes and live in barrels on the streets. That to me would be far more experimental than THE X-MEN PERFORM MOBY DICK.

They're retelling a classic of there's with a different time period, a much darker one in human history. Like the Gaiman story. Like 2099 or the Ultimate line. Or the Exiles. It is a big what if but I love those cause the author can really go to town with concepts and rules. I thought the Spider-Man noir story was pretty great. Good art, clever characterizations, fit the genre but add that element of the superhuman. I don't think I'm an idiot that just buys anything with spider-man on it (especially considering my current boycott) but I will buy a good story with nice art and an interesting concept I have paticularly seen done before.

I get that you don't like them, but sorry they are more creative then simply an ongoing. They have more creative control and that inspires new ideas which is a good thing in general.

You're experimental idea wouldn't happen. It's an industry, small steps. Now I get what you're saying with that, but a comic of Moby Dick is pretty good, get's some kids that wouldn't be into in considering taking a look. To each their own but I see anything unusual as at least trying a bit more than writing that next new avenger issue of them fighting ninja's or whatever.

But if that's what you mean, then what are the Noir books retelling line for line? They're all new stories taking classic characters we know from the 616-verse and setting them in the noir age and bringing us original stories. I think it's pretty sweet and have enjoyed them all so far. :)

I know, but it's where I felt like putting that. XD

I think at this point, we've all have admitted to ourselves that Marvel tries to shove Wolvie and Spidey into any book they can to generate sales.
 
Kirkman just comes across as very bitter to me (probably a consequence of the fact that Kirkman leaving Marvel probably costs him a lot more than it costs Marvel).
I don't think Kirkman left Marvel. Especially since he wrote a comic that just came out last week (Destroyer #5 which was awesome, BTW).
 
So since we're talking about these and Marvel has a multiverse should all Noir, or other odd tales such as these be shared in the multiverse not that we'll see it cause exiles is canceled.

From what I've seen the NOIR titles don't share a universe. In X-men noir there are no superhumans but in Spider-man noir, there are. (well, one) I don't think Wolverine noir matches with the others either. I for one prefer if they keep the noir titles superhuman free. It's fun to watch the writer sweat blood.
 
I don't think Kirkman left Marvel. Especially since he wrote a comic that just came out last week (Destroyer #5 which was awesome, BTW).

That was written a while back, and is his last work for Marvel, for the now anyway (according to the man himself).

The point? Same as any other story, to tell an interesting story you haven't seen before. You're just anti-marvel ranting just to rant without any actual basis or idea of what you're talking about. The noir books are self contained stories of just a few issues. It is something new and different. Is there something familiar there? Yep, but do you did you ***** when something like the lion king comes out for ripping off hamlet? Sweet lord if it was up to you no concept can be used twice dispite how creatively it might be used and how good the story could be. You're ripping things you didn't even look at based on things they aren't. That's beyond unfair. Hell at least I'll look at something before I tear it apart.
