Box Office 2015

Ah, it wasn't a joke. He's just falling back on that now to save face. Stop riding his coattails as he does so, it's not a good look. :D
Pleas then Hulk, explain to me the purpose of this smilie: :o :o :o :o :o

We all know who is attempting to save face. :yay:

I have to say, when it's all said and done, there doesn't seem to be anymore Marvel vs. DC talk around here. Star Wars jumped in and beat them both. Neither side really has a chance at this point. BvS and Civil War won't even come close. I think the world needed this movie. The general public was getting exhausted with superheroes. Secondly, Cameron better do look his three scripts again and make sure he knows what he's doing, because he should be sweating right now.

There hasn't been a string of bad ones to make that statement worth noting. It's simply not true.

Cameron still holds the record for being the human who has traveled to the deepest part of the ocean. He has seen things most people can't even dream of.

I think Jimbo will be fine.

The general public was getting exhausted with superheroes.

lol no.
Also it's interesting to read through this thread and see people say, "I told you Star Wars would be huge!" Was there ever any doubt? It was beyond obvious this thing would be a behemoth.

Instead of making 1.5 billion, Avengers made 1.4 billion. Can't you see that's a telltale sign of audience exhaustion.

5TH UPDATE, SUNDAY AM PT: After beginning offshore rollout on Wednesday, Star Wars: The Force Awakens zoomed to a $279M international debut. Along with Disney’s record-smashing $238M domestic opening, the worldwide weekend tallied an estimated $517M. That’s the second time in history a movie has opened to over $500M at the global box office and is the No. 2 best score ever, behing this summer’s Jurassic World. The offshore tally puts SWTFA in 3rd place on the international charts for biggest opening weekend, falling in line behind Jurassic World ($316.1M including $96M from China) and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 ($314M summer release). The numbers on SWTFA are staggering and set new records for top opening weekend ever in such key territories as the UK, Germany, Australia, and Russia.

It's at $517 million without today's (Sunday) numbers. Dayum.

Secondly, Cameron better..

It should be noted that mister Cameron does what he does(did) with more or less 'original' properties.
I suppose given his personal wealth and position in hollywood he could consider buying up proven and successful properties and having a go...

SW certainly will gross and make more money than any CB movies in the near future, but that doesn't equal CB fatigue. People were starving to see a new SW movie; esp one that delivered the goods as this one did. If anything we should be talking about SW starvation rather then CB fatigue. I will be shocked if, for example, episode VIII does the numbers VII did. Does that equal SW fatigue? Please......

Just because you have a huge franchise that did incredibly well doesn't mean Feige, Cameron, etc. have to start sweating any more than they have been. Believe me, both have worked hard to get where they are and both will be just fine thank you very much....

While it's the weekend estimates, it is a mind blower that TFA got these numbers WITHOUT CHINA. With China, it's not even close. JW had the benefit of both.

I knew some people would use SW's opening to push their "superhero fatigue" talk, and you've said exactly what I would say. ^^

I always expected SW:TFA to be the biggest movie this year and break tons of records. I mean it's Star Wars! Even the prequels made mega millions! And now after many years we get a new SW movie that isn't doinky, of course it will make all the money.

I think out of all the superhero films, both parts of Infinity War have the highest chance of getting SW-level numbers. For next year, BvS and CW will have big openings and both of them will probably reach a billion but I don't think they'll break SW:TFA's opening weekend record (and based on the latest trailers I think CW will have better quality and better legs out of those 2 but that's another story...).

Interested to see how Deadpool, SS and Dr. Strange do too. Deadpool has a big fandom but will they all support the movie, and will non-fans like the movie too? X-Men: Apocalypse will do ok but I think the days when the X-Men series could break records are over.

Yeah. I think that's right. Of course, a lot will depend on how good the IW movies are. If the first one is really good, it will give a nice boost for the second. Predicting an OW of 240M+ for anything, however, seems kind of wacky to me. Those are just crazy numbers.

I wasn't impressed by the BvS trailers, but saw the preview before TFA and thought it looked pretty good. Wonder Woman looked pretty awesome, but I still have trouble finding a spat between Batman and Sup that compelling. I guess the story is how they come together.

It'll be interesting to see who gets bragging rights between CW and BvS. I hope they are both good and will definitely go see both of them.

Damn, $238 million. I remember when Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest broke the opening weekend record almost ten years ago by making $100 million less than this did. I'm glad this took the record from Jurassic World.

Came here to mention this. If Force Awakens had opened in China, it would've soared passed JW's international opening record, which it's only $35~ million short of. Their worldwide opening numbers are only within $7 million of each other as well.

I see analysts emphasize that Star Wars isn't a hot property in China, but that doesn't make any sense. They'll flock in droves to any kooky sci-fi/fantasy property, and have any recent blockbusters not overperformed in that country?

lots of films don't get china on day one, feel for them as well.
Still waiting on the Fury Road china release, I think their cinema would really embrace the movie.

The Sunday is estimated in the weekend total. The actual/revised numbers will come Monday.

The actual Int'l numbers will probably leak in over the next week. Still, only missing JW without China by about 8M is quite a feat.

Jurassic Park and Star Wars are classic American franchises. Bond as well. I don't know if modern franchises like PoTC and Transformers will have that type of lasting effect, where you can come out with a film every 10-15 years and be met with this type of hype. Long shot really, and those franchises have been declining sharply.

I don't know what the future holds for CBM's, but there is no reason to worry for the next five years or so. MCU will be fine. I think the MCU can be another Star Wars and you can continue with new phases, but I think it's too early to say. You have so many characters to pull from though much like Star Wars, but I don't think the MCU story resonates as well with the public, and that's a problem long term. That's really a problem with a lot of modern franchises.

Civil War has some potential as an Empire Strikes Back type of bid where Age of Ultron came up short critically, but it's a tall order. Doesn't look like anything new besides good guys fighting each other. PIII will make its money, but what legacy it leaves remains to be seen.

So the two biggest films of 2015 are not superheroes, but dinosaurs and the Force.

Also two movies with iconic themes done by John Williams.

7TH UPDATE, MONDAY AM: Disney CEO Bob Iger proclaimed this morning that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is “Bigger than big.” Something of an understatement, Iger made the comment in an interview on Bloomberg GO with Stephanie Ruhle and David Westin, during which he said the final global number for opening weekend “will be in the neighborhood of $528M.” That would make it the No. 1 worldwide bow of all time, besting the $524.9M that Jurassic World posted this summer. The final confirmed figures will come in later today, but Iger put domestic in the “$247M range.” However, industry estimates this morning are running from $248.5M-$250.3M which would lift the global cume even higher. Sunday’s international projection was $279M which Iger said would grow in the actuals. “It’s bigger than we thought it would be yesterday.” He also noted that China has yet to open. As we’ve noted, that’s significant because China was worth nearly $100M of JW‘s take in June. And, Disney has been pulling out the stops to prime the Middle Kingdom for the return of the Jedis in January.
