Ant-Man Box Office Predictions

I hate when people don't check the Show Names option on the poll. It helps keep folk honest.

We could endlessly go round and round about the level of disappointment attached to this but maybe it is better realize where it succeeded. This movie clearly established the characters of Lang, Pym, and Van Dyne and defined the the power set of Ant Man in a funny action adventure. It also firmly entrenched two new heroes in the MCU. It did all of this and will likely turn a nice profit. Mission accomplished.

Right on.

Aside from one poster who just got banned for flaming, I really don't see much talk of disappointment. The film performed as expected. We knew from the Phase 3 announcement that Marvel wasn't banking on this film being a huge hit, where they announced GOTG2 immediately after the film came out.

Ant-man will be in Civil War next year, and will likely be part of the Avengers by the end of that film. Wasp will probably be used similarly to Black Widow, but both characters will continue.

Their bottom-base audience? Wuuuuuuuuuut?

It can't be a box office disappointment when it was budgeting for particularly this result and the results were IN-LINE with expectations. You can't be IN-LINE and a disappointment. Hoping has nothing to do with anything. You're putting words in their mouths.

Then take it up with those 47 people and send them a private message. I don't even know why you care.

Here you go again with the Brand. They turned a movie about a man who shrinks and talks to Ants and made it the No.1 movie in America, performing in-line with expectations. Ummm ya, I'd say their brand is just fine. You keep comparing it's BO performance with other Marvel films and it's not a 1-to-1 translation when considering budget and subject matter.

These were my last replies to you. It's impossible to have conversation with someone who's entire premise is based upon vague generalities and his "friends".

I'm friends with the entire American action adventure movie market? WOW! Because...you know...my personal friends aren't the only ones with access to movie theaters...and the box office total doesn't lie.

And yes...the generalities had to be vague because after back to back to back to back blockbusters, NO ONE KNEW what the bottom of Marvel's brand loyalty was.

Yes, everyone knows that the budget was lower. You don't seem to understand the basics of how this works, so you have resorted to using insults in every single post. When a studio plans for a modest box office, they will STILL try to work every avenue to maximize ticket sales (because they aren't stupid)...and in cases where they get an incredible return on their money it isn't like they refund that money. Marvel also expected a modest success, but MAKE NO MISTAKE, they absolutely tried to work every avenue they could to maximize their profits. Because just because their expectations were low, that does not mean that their hopes and efforts weren't aiming higher.

You know what is better than making some money? Making A LOT of money. With the right property, Marvel could invest a little bit of money and make a lot of money in return. This will not be that movie.

But yeah...I'm really sick of arguing with someone who doesn't understand basic concepts and instead wants to twist my words around in order to have a point.

Ha, I knew dalonewolf would get shown the door eventually

Calm down. Sheesh

Agreed. I don't take anyone seriously who calls this a disappointment, much like I didn't take anyone seriously who said this could be a Guardians sized surprise hit.

I knew I had a good reason to have him on my ignore list. Seems I've got a pretty good sense about certain posters since they always seem to get banned eventually. If I had kept every banned poster I'd put on my ignore list, it'd include well over a 100-120 people.

No one expected that kind of turnout except maybe for allowing for the possibility of a surprise hit or whatever. The problem is these people claiming that because it didn't draw GotG money it's somehow a failure or that this is somehow a tragic miscalculation on Marvel's part.

Or, in other words "We were really hoping for a failure here so we could point and laugh but it didn't happen so we'll just have to start manufacturing reasons to support our weird bias instead."

That's exactly what is happening here.

Considering the doom that was cast over this film when Wright departed, this one is a success - especially CRITICALLY, which is what is most impressive. Don't forget:

- Another #1 opening
- Introduced characters purists have been clamoring for
- Will more than likely pull $400-$500 million WW which at the worst is nearly 3 times its budget.

Marvel planned ahead with this one. They knew the battle they were facing with content matter and directorial issues, that is why it cost the least of any MCU entry to date. I always thought this film would be too corny to make, but Feige and Co. handled it very well. This is the kind of movie which posed a significant risk to be roasted.

GOTG seems to have warped minds when it comes to brand strength. These movies are still treated individually by the standard audience member. The subject matter and sub-genre is still important.

Why is that people can lie about what I say for 10 pages...bash me endlessly...and its always then me who has to calm down?

Maybe people should just accept that other people have a different opinion. Personally, I am disappointed that the Marvel brand is not more valuable than it apparently is. For some reason, people feel the need to force me to not be disappointed. But I am. Because I want Marvel to be INCREDIBLY profitable...I want them ten times as profitable as they already are. Somehow, that makes me a Marvel hater and a troll who was hoping that this movie would fail.

This is the type of post I'm talking about.

I PAID to see this movie, you know. I have paid to see EVERY Marvel movie on opening weekend. I have repeatedly said that my disappointment in the box office is that it did not make MORE because I want Marvel to be MORE successful.

And you read that as me wanting Marvel to fail. It's annoying, quite frankly.

I don't make use of it as much as I probably should. I have a few on there though and it does help.

Actuals for Minions and Trainwreck: $49.27 million and $30.1 million respectively. The actual for Ant-Man should be available soon.

So putting a 2.5-3 multiplier this will end up at 144-178M, OS will also be a crucial factor which could end up anywhere from 200-350M

My guess is the final gross will be about $155 million domestic and about $440-470 million worldwide.

The weekend breakdown:

Friday - $22,649,199
Saturday - $19,464,976 (-14%)
Sunday - $15,111,351 (-22%)

I'm asking this.

Is that good? After the Wright stuff, I think it's good

Will Feige and Disney be happy?

Future sequels?
Genre still strong?

I think FF will not do this well
Will anyone spin it that CBM is going out

DC or Marvel I don't care give me content that is recognizable.

I'm apprehensive about FF

Worried about a 6' tall Apocalypse

Batman vs Superman will be fine

It's a good, profitable return that would lead to a sequel at most studios, but Marvel is juggling so many properties that they may choose to just utilize the characters in other MCU films and forego a sequel.

Fantastic Four is reportedly tracking much better than expected, but tracking can turn out to be way out, so we'll see.

I hope it will get a sequel. I'm thinking $450M will be Ant-Man's final WW gross so it came loose the MCU past $9 billion worldwide.

You're free to have a different opinion, but what you said her is just a false premise so if you don't expect people to react to that, or debate you based on a false premise then that might explain the reaction you're getting.

So everyone slid a bit from estimates. Ah well.

not surprising, this was just a weak weekend at the box office, especially on the west coast. the question is will those people be drawn back to the theaters to see this, or will they wait for DVD/BluRay ?
