After turning Homer's epic poem "The Iliad" into the 2004 film Troy, Warner Bros. and Brad Pitt are teaming with George Miller to adapt the Greek poet's other masterwork, "The Odyssey."

Their intention is to transfer the tale to a futuristic setting in outer space.

Variety says Warner Bros. has quietly set up The Odyssey, and the early hope is that Pitt will star and Miller will direct, with Pitt's Plan B producing.

Both Homer poems dealt with the Trojan War; "The Odyssey" focused on the exploits of Odysseus, who hatched the idea to build the Trojan Horse. "The Odyssey" deals with his long journey home after he declines to become a god.

Pitt just began shooting the Quentin Tarantino-directed Inglourious Bastards.

Hmmm, I know this isn't exactly a sequel, but I wonder why the studio doesn't want Sean Bean to reclaim his role of Odysseus. He was pretty good in Troy.

Yeah, I wanted to see The Odyssey with Sean Bean after Troy.

I'm thinking that despite Troy's success, WB decided that the resurgence of the sword and sandal epic had run it's course.

THE ODYSSEY IN SPACE… with Brad Pitt & George Miller

Brad Pitt and Warner Bros, who teamed together to turn Homer’s epic poem The Iliad into the 2004 Summer tentpole TROY… are to team together to work on the Greek’s other famous poem THE ODYSSEY with George Miller expected to direct.

Though surprisingly, it won’t be a direct sequel to the near $500 million worldwide hit.

Instead it will be set in outer space, according to Variety…

The classic story follows the character of Odysseus, who hatched the idea to build the Trojan Horse. “The Odyssey” deals with his long journey home after he declines to become a god.

One of the more surprising studio decisions in recent years was for WB not to go ahead with a TROY sequel featuring Sean Bean (who played Odysseus), who was clearly in TROY setup for bigger things. That movie could have also placed Bean into being a Summer action star and things might not have gotten so bad for him that he had to star in a remake of THE HITCHER.

Pitt is one week into filming INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS for Tarantino whilst Miller has become free after JUSTICE LEAGUE was dropped at WB.
