Shia LaBeouf has signed on to star in Universal's techno thriller Dark Fields, reports Variety.

Neil Burger (The Illusionist) will direct the film, which is based on Alan Glynn's 2002 novel "The Dark Fields."

The story centers on a young man who comes into possession of the ultimate smart pill, and the events that ensue.

Leslie Dixon (Hairspray, upcoming The Birds) adapted the screenplay and will produce.

LaBeouf next will be seen in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Eagle Eye. He starts filming Transformers 2 this summer.

Never read the book and the outline is thin but i like Shia so this has my interest.

Some more info on the book.

Synopsis
Imagine a drug that makes your brain function in a fantastically efficient way, tapping in to your fundamental resources of intelligence and drive. Imagine a drug that could make you read and remember entire books in a matter of hours, or learn a foreign language in a day. Imagine a drug that could make you process information so fast you can see the patterns on the stock market. Eddie Spinola is on such a drug. It's a pill called MDT-48. It's a Viagra for the brain, a designer drug that's redesigning his life. Eddie's not the only one doing MDT, but with his dealer shot dead and Eddie escaping with a large stash, he's the only one with a supply. And while the drug is helping Eddie make the sort of money he's only dreamed about, he's also beginning to suffer its side-effects ...

i am waiting for a movie about a drug that makes you super smart.
i hope its set in our real world.

this guy's career is going through the roof.

This sounds more like A Scanner Darkly, the concept of which I liked. Shia is getting really popular in Hollywood.

He was popular last year now he's becoming a Superstar, in my books he was already years ago for his role on Even Stevens.

I love that concept. Let's hope this is an adaptation that stays true to the novel this time, eh?

I have faith in Neil Burger.

the story sounds cool. Shia's star power is getting crazy. He's going to be the next super star.

I like Shia, but he is way too young for this role. Typical Hollywood thinking.

How old was the character in the book ?

Im guessing 30's the synopsis doesn't sound like its a age restricted role, just states he's divorced...

The project really has me curious, it says its in the vein of films like Fight Club and The Game....two great movies. Plus Neil Burger is directing and I loved The Illusionist.

Isn't Shia playing a thirty-year old in Eagle Eye?

I think he's in his early to mid 20s in Eagle Eye. He still looks young. I can't see him as 30 or older.

He looks fine, Ш doubt the age is so important detail in the novel.

Exclusive: Shia to Shoot Dark Fields This Winter
Source: Edward Douglas
September 17, 2008

ComingSoon.net just finished speaking with director Neil Burger (The Illusionist) about his American road movie The Lucky Ones, and he confirmed to us that he would start shooting Dark Fields with actor Shia LaBeouf in New York City sometime this winter. Based on the 2002 novel "The Dark Fields" by Alan Glynn, the Universal Studios thriller is about a pill that makes you smarter and it's Burger's first film directed based on someone else's script, in this case an adaptation by Leslie Dixon, who's also writing the remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds.

Burger said the subject matter isn't handled in a science fiction way but as he told us, "It's more like if there's viagra or steroids, why isn't there something that increases your synaptic connections and makes you think smarter and faster, but it's not without side effects and consequences."

Look for our full interview with Burger next week before The Lucky Ones opens in select cities on Friday, September 26 (against Shia LaBeouf's new thriller Eagle Eye, no less!)

I knew about this for a while but still am excited for it. Sounds really good, he's been in robot films, now he's going sci-fi yah.

So as they start filming in this winter, I suppose they aim for a release date in Fall'09.

Bradley Cooper (who stars in Paramount's "where the hell are you?" Case 39) is set to star in Dark Fields, a thriller being directed by Neil Burger for Relativity Media. The story follows a down-and-out writer (Cooper) who gets his hands on a top-secret pharmaceutical drug that makes one smarter. He experiences sudden financial and social success but soon discovers that the drug has lethal and lasting side effects, including "trip-switching," a phenomenon in which time moves with a stop-motion quality. Before long, mysterious antagonists are pursuing him. The thriller is said to be in the vein of Fight Club and The Game. Shia LaBeouf was originally attached to star in the project. The script is based on the book by Alan Glynn, with the screenplay written by Leslie Dixon ("The Thomas Crown Affair"). Universal will distribute via Relativity's Rogue Pictures.

Wonder why Shia was replaced or maybe he dropped out. Cooper seems to be everywhere now with the success of the Hangover. But that's a good thing cause I'm happy for him.

Yeah, he was in alot of other things as like a side character, but after the Hangover he's just been shot straight to the A list.

So they have altered the plot slightly, and isn't Cooper in another movie with Fields in the title? Hope this sees an upturn for Bobby D.

I thought they were the same movie. The movies with the word Fields in them.
