Well, it’s not Paint Your Wagon 2, but I guess this is as good a way to get another major filmmaker to do a musical as any. A new version of A Star Is Born is a film that has been lurking at the edges of possibility for a couple years. Now Clint Eastwood has agreed to produce and direct it, with Beyoncé starring.

Deadline has the surprising news of Clint Eastwood’s involvement. Beyoncé has been attached since last year, and there was a point where it looked like Russell Crowe might co-star with Nick Cassavetes directing. That version died, but the script now is apparently the same one by Will Fetters that was floating around WB then. At this point, there is no male lead cast.

This would be the fourth major screen version of A Star is Born, with the Judy Garland version from 1954 standing as the most revered. We can probably expect some updates to the story of a young girl who dreams of being a star and is given a boost by a washed-up older star, but at the core don’t expect too many changes. But in the days of reality TV, American Idol and YouTube fame, the whole idea of becoming a star is now a bit different than it once was. (It seems that the drive for stardom has only increased, however.)

Clint Eastwood is famously interested in music — jokes about Paint Your Wagon aside, he has composed many of the scores for his own films (and been Oscar-nominated for one) and this makes an impressive career turn. Hereafter may have come and gone last year, but he plans to shoot J. Edgar within the next couple months, and then has this penciled in for the fall. By the time this shoots, he’ll be 81. Say what you want about the latter days of his directorial career, but the guy makes just about everyone else look lazy.

Clint has increased my interest somewhat in this movie as has Beyonce, but my interest isn't enough.

Bradley Cooper to direct and (maybe) star with Beyonce:

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros is negotiating with its American Sniper star Bradley Cooper to make his feature directorial debut on the remake of A Star Is Born. The hope is for Cooper to also star in the film. Once his deal is done, their first stop will be to Beyonce, who was once positioned to play the role of the young woman whose dreams of stardom are helped by a self-destructive icon whose best days are behind him. She was circling when Clint Eastwood was going to direct the remake, and the director discussed that male lead role with Cooper. She hasn’t yet been re-approached formally. Cooper will take a pass at the script with Will Fetters, who wrote the most recent draft, and the hope is that he can get into this wholeheartedly when he finishes performing The Elephant Man in its London transfer from Broadway.

He will also become a producer on this through the Warner Bros-based 22 Green, the banner he shares with Todd Phillips. Jon Peters, Billy Gerber, and Basil Iwanyk are also producers. Cooper is coming off a double Oscar nomination for American Sniper, which has surpassed $528 million worldwide and growing, remarkable for an R rated war film that cost $58 million to produce. There is some symmetry to these two films. When Steven Spielberg dropped out of American Sniper, Warner Bros worldwide production president Greg Silverman told Cooper that Clint Eastwood was reading the book for recreation. Cooper was able to call Eastwood directly because of the relationship they developed when Eastwood offered Cooper that male lead in A Star Is Born.

starFirst directed by William Wellman in a 1937 film that starred Fredrick March and Janet Gaynor, A Star Is Born was first made at Warner Bros in 1954 with a George Cukor-directed film that starred Judy Garland and James Mason, and then was done in 1976 with Frank Pierson directing Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand. This has long been a priority at Warner Bros, with leading men like Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale all circling at some point. Beyonce has been most often mentioned for that female lead and really, how can you beat that? She’s displayed her acting chops in films that included Austin Powers in Goldmember and her singing creates an opportunity not really seen since Warner Bros’ The Bodyguard with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner.

cukorstreisandWarner Bros production executives see this as a natural extension for Cooper. They think he can make the kind of transition to multi-hyphenate status that Ben Affleck did when he began directing on Gone Baby Gone, The Town and then Argo, which won Best Picture for the studio. Cooper was very hands on for American Sniper, through all its ups and downs, and he has shown an eye for details that include post production. Directing has been on Cooper’s mind for some time. He has been circling the New Line film Honeymoon With Harry, which got Dan Fogelman to write the latest draft. Cooper wants to star in that film with Robert De Niro, and he also hopes to direct that sometime down the line.

It looks like A Star Is Born will be his first turn behind the camera. He’s repped by CAA, Beyonce by ICM Partners.

Interesting, I don't need Beyonce though.

I think Cooper will be a good director

They're going to have a heck of a time making it look like the female lead is desperately trying to break into show business, when these days all people need to do is shoot and post a video from their phone to You Tube to get public attention.

it doesn't say they are setting it in 2015

Beyonce would've made more money, but Lady Gaga is a proven acting talent.

I wasn't a big Gaga fan, but I watched an interview with her and Jamie Lee Curtis last week and changed my tune. She's very articulate, thoughtful and intelligent.

I'd like to see her act more IMO.

I liked Gaga in America Horror Story: Hotel and I'm a fan of her as a musical artist. I'd definitely like to see her do more acting. I don't like Beyonce's acting, I'd be way more interested in seeing this film with Gaga in the lead role.

It is interesting that Gaga is mirroring Madonna's career. Madonna got into more movies in the 90's like how Gaga is getting more into acting in the 2010's.

Beyonce is a crap actress so they made the right decision. Gaga is more intriguing for the role.

A Star is Born This Way

Directorial debut for Cooper, first lead film role for Gaga, I hope it works out for them.

Yeah, she's definitely pulling a Madonna.

Gaga is not a good actress. The fact that the HFPA gave her a Golden Globe for AHS is laughable. Her vocals will be outstanding but performance wise, I'm not expecting much.

your out of her mind she was amazing in AHS she has great screen presence and charisma, she probably didn't deserve the GG but i thought she gave a really good performance in AHS

This pic and her new song reminds me why I like her.
