Superman Returns Brandon Routh. Great Casting Choice or Bad?

wow. after all the horrible acting welling has done people still think he's better than routh? routh was great in the movie. the story was what brought the movie down.

Routh was stiff, and wooden in some scenes, and his clark is just a rip off from Chris Reeve but a bit toned down.
Now the reason why Welling OWNZ this role right now is because he's doing an original take on the character, and he's convinced MILLIONS of fans myself included that HE IS the New Superman! Way before this movie hit, and even without a suit! His acting on the show is fine, and sometimes simply brilliant for the character he is playing, and honestly it's stupid how some people say he's a bad actor! The guy is playing a young teen, and guess what!?? If you use the excuse that it wasnt Routh's fault but the story or director for Routh's crappy performance then the same could be said for any that Welling has had on the show in the past , afterall he DOESN'T have a 260 million budget, and a well known director behind him on every episode, all he has is a small budget tv show on the F'in WB network!! And even on that he OWNZ the role! And OWNZ ROUTH as Clark/Superman!

Now the movies come out, and its been proven that Routh IS NOT SUPERMAN, Singer was wrong all along, and well my friend the simple truth is that the movie stinks... DEAL WITH IT!

Didn't care for the movie in the least, but I don't think Brandon was bad for the part. Unfortunately though, the story was so lacking and unoriginal that he comes off equally bland in the role as a result. Sad really, because this film will quite possibly make or break his career, and it seems to me the latter is more likely at this point.

He was great as Clark Kent AND Superman, but I'm still peeved that he didn't have as many lines as a main character should have. I felt Kitty even had more lines than him.

Yeah, that's my only complaint. Give him more lines next time.

Story elements can be argued and all but there shouldn't be a doubt, Routh was the best choice. Perfect casting decision.

Stop rambling. It not a good logic point. It's just silly pointless arguments instead of good actual points. And it's been proven Routh isn't Superman? Uh....that your opinion, kid. Not's a fact. I still think that BR was too slim and lacked a sturdy jawline to play Superman. I've gotten used to him after seeing his face plastered everywhere, but I still think they could have done much better. And even though I've outgrown the idea of Tom Welling playing Superman, I do think he would have filled out a costume better than Routh (and I'll leave it at that).

Basically, I think that you really need to have an actor with almost body-builder like physique to play Superman. A slim, "athletic" bodytype just doesn't seem to do justice to Superman's image. I'm not talking about WWE wrestler big, but I'd have liked someone who has a good set of muscles that are actually noticeable. Clark Kent is a big guy, and IMO seeing a big guy who also acts like a klutz would be hillarious.

Brandon was superb - I was blown away with how he looked as well as his presence in the role of Superman - it doesn't matter how many lines he had. The only time he was wooden was in the Smallville scene with his Mother. Other than that, within the role of Superman he exceeded my expectations.

Sorry, but he actually makes me forget about TW now.

I thought Brandon did a great job, and the film was great. The only complaints I have were these:

1. The whole "statistically speaking, flying is the safest way to travel" line. My problem wasn't with Routh's delivery... I just didn't think they needed to homage the first movie THAT much... they could have had him say something similar to that line without quoting it exactly. However, I really liked the scene at the end where he quotes Brando's Jor-El when talking to his son. THAT was very well done.

2. I really want to see the "uncut" version of the film because I feel like there was a point in the middle where Superman/Clark gets kind of lost in the shuffle. Obviously he can't be in every scene for reasons of plot development, but for a while there, I found myself thinking, okay, this is interesting and all, but I want to see more of Superman. And not just Superman flying around saving people, but Superman interacting with other characters and dealing with his own issues and such. But if anything, that's a compliment to Routh because he did do a great job and he left me wanting to see more.

Welling wouldnt have made this film a success either, the film has flopped because of the bad press regarding other issues with the film, and the cost. Its hard to tell if people were pissed about the costume, the copycat version of part 1, or the kid. Basically was the press and the film cost. Probably if they had a CGI of Reeve in the film then that would have been a success, but lets face it alot of people see Reeve as the man, and will not settle either.

I gotta agree with you on the Reeve /Routh thing. You're the first person to point out what I've been thinking for the past few days. I would add that alot of the media critics couldn't accept anyone playing the role besides Chris Reeve . Had Welling played the role they would have jumped on him as well . Looking at what's happened to Routh , Welling probably feels he made the right choice.
