Brazilian archbishop denounces abortion for pregnant 9 year old that was raped

Gobby's pointing out that while many people don't believe in God, the smarter ones will admit (sometimes grudgingly) that there's no proof either way. Thus saying it's a "fact" since there's no proof is silly.

The only thing with atheism is that it isn't about making the claim "god does not exist". It's more looking at the "evidence" provided by the various religions, and if they aren't convincing, rejecting them and their god-claims. So in the end, atheism is "a lack of belief in a god-claim"

All right guys, you converted me. I am now no longer atheist but I am Teddibearius. I believe there is a Teddy Bear who flies around in the sky and has a little gadget that he uses to choose what happens the next day and so on. This Teddy Bears name is Teddy.

All hail Teddy!

I'm going to start a church.

There would still be wars. Why does any advanced civilization seek to destroy a less advanced one? Because the land is statically valuable, because there are resources that can be cultivated and exploited, but most of all, simply because they can.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Opinions like his are a joke to me. He wants solid proof that God exists? Give me solid proof that he doesn't.

It's been my experience that many atheists don't so much not believe in God...they believe in not believing in God.

Totally man. Religion just causes trouble and THATS all.
Never seen it do good before, except in movies.

What makes you think there wouldn't have been a Holocaust without religion? The Holocaust didn't have much to do with religion. The Nazis considered Jews a race, atheists and Christians of Jewish family background were exterminated too.

And if there was no releigion, the jews would have been considered by the Nazis like all other people. You Know?

As much as I dislike religion in general, it does serve as a very handy support for lots and lots of people. There are a whole lot of people out there who need a structure in their lives to make their tough decisions easy- mapping out their lives and guiding them through. Whether that is a good thing or not I suppose is up to your opinion, but it does make people's lives easier for them.

The Nazis considered Jews a race, they were not killed for their religion. As I said, people of Jewish background were murdered no matter what religion they were.

Okay, fine. IF there were no "Jews" who would the Nazis have killed?

Hmmm....

Let's see, they also killed dozens of other minority groups, pick one and they could pick up the slack.

I think a big problem with some atheists, though certainly not all, is the perception of arrogance. That people who have religious beliefs are stupid or delusional. I myself am agnostic bordering on atheism, but having gone through a kidney transplant in high school, and meeting many other families that were not so lucky as mine, I can fully understand the need for religous belief. If you experience a tragedy, like if your child dies, or is the victim of some brutal crime or circumstance, and causes your life to pretty much become a living hell, is it stupid to believe there was a reason behind it? That there is some sense behind all the senselessness? I don't think there is a God, but I wish there was one, or at least something, and I can't blame the people who actually think there is.

Funny part is, a lot of people call themselves "atheists", and most "athiests" I've met have very- pardon the pun- "holier than thou" attitudes about them, and believe themselves to be much more intelligent than those around them- more specifically, those who follow religion.

"Atheism" is simply the belief that there is no supernatural higher power. The atheists that strictly believe that there is no afterlife, life has no purpose, blah blah (which is just about every atheist I've met personally), is actually called "nihilism."

So much for knowing what they're talking about.

Agreed. It's something I have utter disdain for when I hear non-believers (I'm one myself) dump on someone's religious beliefs. Take this recent campaign for an atheist advertisement for example, I think the slogan was something along the lines of "There probably isn't a God. Now stop worrying and enjoy life". I find that line of thinking completely condescending and totally ignores how for many people religion actually helps them live their life.

Amongst all the tragedy in the world such as parents watching their young child die, watching someone die before their time, people dying in horrific accidents, and people dying from devastating terminal illness, religion can be something that gives strength to people to keep going in life. Just look at all the years we spend building up personal ties with people just to watch eventually die. It's one of the biggest cruelties in this World, I would never take a line of superiority or a "lowly peasant needing a fallacy to live life" attitude when it comes to the belief in the afterlife.

You're in, like, jr. high school, aren't you? Grow up.

The fact of the matter is, no one knows whether there's a god or not, and to claim you do makes you stupid and arrogant.

It's as simple as that. You cant prove there is a god, but you cant prove their isn't. The only thing you can do is to keep searching for answers, instead of claiming you already know the answers, and then demanding to listen to any reason otherwise.
