Budget Question

I was trying to show that there is nothing wrong with filler in the true sense...it's a necessary part of a show.

Oh, I hear ya B8. I wasn't directing that last rant at you LOL. It just gets tiring to see the same ole freakin' arguments prattled on when the points being made have absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand. It's a strawman's tactic to bash the subject while diverting attention from the original question. In this case, SV's alleged use of "filler" episodes - a mild putdown in the context used - is explanation for what exactly as it pertains to budget? (Rhetorical question)

I agree, some of the F/X in Heroes does not play well.

In the true sense by definition, all shows have filler. But the filler is there to expand on characters backstories or elaborate on their motivations...but that's not bad...too many people gripe and complain that there is that sort of stuff in the show, when it is necessary to the overall plot.

So in affect, stories can't thrive without filler.

I hope that made sense.

Sometimes I wonder if "filler" is just a lazy pejorative critics prefer to use to describe SV eps they don't like.

More on point... the budget of any ep (that's the topic of this thread, right?) is determined by what's required to tell the story. Period. Debating the format of the show (anthology vs. serial) is DUMB!!!! Even Gough admitted if they wanted to do an episode detailing the last days of Krypton (arguably "filler" by the definition some fans allege), it would probably be The. Most. Expensive. Episode SV ever produced. C'mon people. The "filler" argument in this case is just stupid.

I want them to detail the last days of Krypton...how awsome would that episode be.

I was just trying to point out that people need to stop throwing the word "Filler" around, especially since most of them don't know what the meaning of it is. You are probably right, that they use it on episodes they don't like.

] LOL. Nah, what I'm talking about is the introduction of irrelevant issues - particularly negative ones - in order to sidetrack the main argument by devaluing it through association. Call it a pet peeve of mine. Some people are experts at it, perhaps w/o even knowing they're doing it.

I dunno. On a whole, I don't think Heroes' FX comes *close* to Clark's super jumps in episodes like Insurrection, Hidden or Lucy, the "Clark Time" effects in episodes like Accelerate or Run, the slow motion saves with deflected objects (bullets, axes, glass, etc) in Fanatic, Freak, Obscura, Lineage, Fragile, Rage or Fade, the car-flipping effects in Covenant or Pariah, the formation of the FOS in Arrival or the helicopter tether in Exposed, all of the moving X-Ray scenes from dozens of episodes....

Yeah. Sorry Heroes. It's a turkey shoot.

Once again I wasn't attacking the show for having fillers okay let me write this big enough so you will understand what I have said I just think they should have upped SV budget when they moved over to the CW and gave them a better writing staff. Thats all I was saying because you always here the producers say we don't have the budget, we don't have the budget. If this show is suppose to be your number 1 show and brings in as much money as you (fans) say then why have they not upped it.

Just because you move to a new network and you're the #1 show on that network doesn't mean you'll be automatically assigned a bigger budget.

When the producers say "we can't afford to this or that" they're talking about flight or something bigger, and Heroes flying scenes isn't exactly what I wanna see on SV, they're just "OK".

it looks like some people dont get why i even started all this. heroes has more effects in general than SV. yes i know that they have more cheap effects. but they have them.

we all know that we are watching a tv show. so we can not expect effects from a 150 milion budget movie. the flying in SV looked better but still fake. and i like it. i like it every time. but i doesnt even have to be flying. have some episodes where clark jump after a rocket or on a truck.

when i started watching SV i thought that there will be some dawsons creek scenes and action scenes.. now that we are in the 6 season i think that they are not using more action but less.
i dont even want to start a fight. i jsut want to explain to you that from now on heroes is a better show then SV to me. and i guess a lot of people will realize that also. i have enough of lana clark and lex.

And actually Smallville has more action than it did in it's early seasons, they've got a bigger budget than they did in the 1st season, they just tend to pack it into bigger episodes like Zod, Arrow, Justice, etc. which blows anything from the first 2-3 seasons out of the water effects wise.

Heroes, while still interesting, is painting itself into an awful corner. They're making it so everyone except for Peter and Sylar is becoming pointless since one of the two of them can now do what all the others can.

I'm glad someone else noticed this....I was telling my wife Monday night that I am slowly losing interest in Heroes, part of it is because many of the characters are becoming pointless to the show. The show better have one heck of a finale or I'll be done with it...for the most part I still watch because I really like Hiro and Ando.

If anyone thinks the flying is good on that show, they need help. Peter and Clause looked exactly like it did back in the Lois&Clark days. The first flight back at the beginning of the season was so herky jerky because of the wires it was laughable.

I've pretty much *already* given up on Heroes. [Hangs head in shame.] Yes, it's true. I have about three or four unwatched tapes from the last string of eps that I just haven't been interested in seeing. I watched the first two eps coming out of the winter hiatus and that was it, I was done. Totally lost interest. Too many characters - many of which I could care less about - and they keep adding more. STOP! Enough already! It's so watered down as it is. Meh. And on top of everything, the serial approach just got to me after a while. I really don't care any more what's in the hatch... err... that Peter is gonna asplode (or wherever they've taken the H-Bomb-in-NY subplot), or if Hiro gets the right sword - or whatever. Yeah. I'm done.

Don't get me wrong, Heroes is a really good show and I like it alot but what really annoys me about the show is that they've jam packed too many characters into the story. Sometimes they go a whole episode with out even showing one of the main characters in order to further progress one of the other characters.

See! I'm the same way. I like Hiro, Clair, her "boyfriend" (LOL) and her father, the cop, and the painter. Mohinder was interesting in the first few eps but got REAL boring after that, Peter is way too whiny, I want to slap his brother, I never liked She Hulk (and her entire side story including the kid) from the very first episode, Syler only interested me when he was the mystery serial killer, and Kryptonite guy (the dude that saps all the other heroes' powers) is like a plank of wood. They killed off one of the characters I did like (Mohinder's friend, who worked for Clair's father), and they left Hiro's waitress GF dead (I thought they'd bring her back somehow.)

Meh. Not enough characters to like, and too many to either not like or be indifferent about doth not for good entertainment make. I don't care how big the budget is.

...That philosophy applies to movies too.

You lasted longer than I did. I gave up after the 3rd episode, because there were too many characters, who's plots were taking too long to go anywhere of any meaning to me.

Excerpt from a Greg Beeman blog about last weeks Heroes:

The flying shots I had actually shot way back in December, at the same time as we had done shots for Peter being thrown off the roof for episode 14. I’ve done flying before, on SMALLVILLE. There’s a sequence in the season premiere of season 4, when Clark flies into the air, out onto the edge of space and up to Lex Luthor’s jet. I thought that was pretty good TV! But trust me flying is hard too do right. You have to hang the actors in uncomfortable positions on a huge blue screen stage and blow giant wind-fans at them, then you have to swoop the camera around them to mimic their flight through the air. The hours fly by as you have lots of discussions about “tilt” and “yaw” while the actors are getting angrier and angrier because their testicles are being crushed by the harness they’re in. It’s not that fun. I’m pretty happy with the way Peter’s flight turned out – but I don’t think it’s 100% brilliant or groundbreaking. I tell you this is a really hard thing to do right. Next time I’ll do better.
