Budget Question

You lasted longer than I did. I gave up after the 3rd episode, because there were too many characters, who's plots were taking too long to go anywhere of any meaning to me.

Well, I'm bored with Mohinder. His foolish naivete is annoying, especially now that Sylar is taking advantage of it and his goals in getting in touch with the heroes are a bit thin and seems only to be contrived to allow Sylar to tag along and find others like him more easily.

Also I'm bored with Nikki/Jessica's story, even Matt's and Hiro's stories (two characters that I like a lot) are moving into sorta strange territory...

It hasn't lost me yet, I still like Claire and her dad (he's an amazing character, even if it's crazy how easily he manipulates his own family) and I'm curious what's going to happen next week now that Matt and those other two (I'm not good with names) are now holding them hostage.

It's a strange, but an exciting, development in the stories of Matt, Claire, Mr. Bennet and the rest.

edit.

Hittng submit, and then cancelling the action, doesnt work.

Excerpt from a Greg Beeman blog about last weeks Heroes:

That's really interesting BigTree. Thanks for posting.

See, even Greg Beeman acknowledges that his effects arent quite as good. Or maybe its because Tom is a bigger trooper than the other guy. :cwink:

it seems to me in all shows they are trying to make a series for more bucks than they've got. if the budget was higher their aspirations would be higher and even then they may not be able to afford it

My only problem with Smallville's special effects is that they spend too much on pointless crap.

A good example is in Sneeze, the SFX for the super breath is cool looking and all, but was so much needed for it. I mean they could of done a less detailed effect, saved a couple of bucks, put that couple of bucks towards a better effect later on. The same goes for the shot in which we follow the arrow in Arrow a shot from behind Oliver would have cost less and been just as effective and put the money to a better shot.

As for flying, to introduce it properly is to much bother. It's hard to look like your flying naturally, it takes months of training and pratice to pull it off. Welling did a decent job in Season 4 but at the same time there was no movement, he was pretty much in straight path, it would be much harder to make it look real if he was twisting a turning etc and if he wasn't it would be the same old **** all the time.

BTw I never got this love for flying, to me it's just another power.

Mmm... I'm gonna say yes. It was a new power episode; I'm glad they threw money at it.

You mean another power? What else is there besides flight? Personally, I'd rather see them sink money into stuff relating directly back to Clark, though I did like the Arrow effects. [shrugs]

Hee! Well... yeah. LOL It's not like they have anything to really base it off of. For example, birds fly when they flap their wings, but we don't have wings, and Clark doesn't need to flap his arms. :D Clark moves through the air like a glider, or more accurately, like a Harrier Jet (since he can also hover.) So there's really not a heck of a lot of movement there, but there is pitch, roll and yaw. I think they did a decent job with movement, both in-camera and Welling on the crane himself....

Eh. I dunno. Different strokes. Without getting into the nitty gritty of the physics of wind shear and whatnot, I think it's Superman's coolest power, but YMMV. Who *wouldn't* want to fly?

That's a good point. But they shouldn't use it again.

I'm not saying I didn't like the effects and I'm not talking about flight. I'm talking about an effect that will help the story. I'm just saying a cheaper effect wouldn't have hurt the story, meaning that they would have more money for an effect that will help the story down the line.

Yeah I liked it myself [although it would have been better without effects behind him], but I doubt they could have added much varition without the training. i know you don't like Sr so don't jump down my throat for this.
I thought Routh was really good at the flying in the film but you should have seen his training the poor guy went through he trained for hours in the pool for months and hours in those wires for months.

I don't think it's as important as the other powers there's much use for it in a story contest other than an airbound save which would get redudant in a weekly TV show. In fact it may already be boring already, it was done twice in Superman The Movie, done a few times on Lois and Clark, done on the Animated Series and then in Superman Returns.
Other than that it would be a Point a to Point b thing wasting money that could go to more valuable things that help the story

The special effects on SV could be better tha Heroes sometimes but... The stories always go back to square one. I could watch an episode of Heroes without one special effects shot and if the characters are written the same it would still tromp all over SV due to the poor progress that is made during an SV season.

Heroes gives us an entire season that leads up to something, thus far in season 1 it's the explosion. How does it happen? Who causes it? Does Peter learn to control his powers? ETC...

Far more of a progression on Heroes.

Did you think about or read what you just wrote? An entire season to find out if he is going to blow up New York when you know dang well he isn't. All this is suppose to be happening over like a 3 week period, that's a heck of a stretch.

I'm not trying to be critical of either show or any show, but if you stare long enough, you'll find glaring errors. So don't try to say one is miles better than the other.

Well outside of the SV forum there is a growing consensus that SV pales in comparison to Heroes. Lot's of relevant reasons for this deduction to have been made btw.

http://superherohype.com/forums/showthread.php?t=254311 http://superherohype.com/forums/showthread.php?t=264851

Pretty consistent.

Hell, I wish SV was better than Heroes. Superman is my fav superhero of all time. The prospect of before he was Superman, seeing Clark Kent develop his powers... That's great. Unfortunately we get little development on SV. Filler upon filler episodes, insipid love triangles, etc... It's a shame. Every once in a while we get an episode that seems like it takes the story somewhere then *BAM* 6 episodes of mindless drama/action which has little too do with Clark learning who he is and what his destiny ultimately will be. A shame. A damn shame. I watch it for what it is, enjoy the fleeting moments of good dialogue Rosenbaum/Glover gets... Beyond that? Not much beneath the surface.

Heroes however not only scratches the surface of their story for the season, they make sure EVERY episode is directly tied in somehow leading up to one ultimate moment. This season- the explosion. We could assume Peter won't be the cause of it, but that's not where the interesting story is. What's interesting is "Who is the cause of the explosion?" and "What will be changed in order for this explosion to not take place?"

In SV a lot of the time all we can ask in one episode "How will Clark stop this krypto freak?" and the next week in another episode "How will Clark stop the krypto freak?"

Meh

You know, I think this thread has more than served its purpose and should now be closed.

What exactly does Heroes, it's stories & it's characters, have to do with the thread title? Weren't we discussing SV's budget and it's SFX?

I would love to see Heroes 5 years from now, and see if people would still feel the same way as they did 5 years ago.

Here you go, reading is your friend Kal :p

Heroes is in the first season and has more action(more effects) than SV that is in the 6 season.at least that is what i see.
is it the budget or what?

That is where the 3-4 pages of discussion on Heroes/SV came from in this thread.

And we concluded that even though Hereos might have a bigger budget, SV's SFX look miles better, full stop.

the sad part is, that any hope JC ever had of trying to enter into a semi-intelligent discussion here went out the window years ago when everyone lost respect for him, and he was banned from here countless times.

My best advice to you is to ignore his juvenile attempt at goading you into a "our TV show vs. your TV show" argument so he can get his rocks off, and just ignore his stupidity.

My advice to you is to read a thread first. This page was my first in commenting on the subject. You have 4 pages before it that had the discussion going on. I put my opinion in at you can't handle that I'm here. Immature. Go ban yourself for the stupidity you are displaying in attacking someone who is being relevant to the conversation.

^And my advice to you would be to improve your reading comprehension or lack thereof. I didnt say you werent being relevant to the conversation., I sad that even when you are being relevant everyone is automatically going to be on the defensive since you've always been such an instigating little prick.

But let's face facts, you only come in here for one reason and one reason only. But go ahead, go tel the people in the other forums how "irrational" we all here for not being more open to your trolling and getting you banned.

Only one that's been instigating is you. Call me a prick? Wash your mouth out with soap. Go sit in a corner on a timeout, you overgrown kid that can't handle an opinion. You always go too far. You see my name and without reading the content think I deserve to be slammed? Nope. I don't. I will say what I want. Opinions won't harm you. Your insulting is 10x more harmful than me saying "I don't like this aspect of SV because..."

They did a pretty decent job of making Dean Cain fly in Lois & Clark. Why couldn't they do that for Welling in Smallville?

Wow you prove your maturity by saying it's valid to insult me just by my presence because years ago we disagreed. Yeah mature

Cuss at me, tell me I'm on ritalin... Yet I'm the one out of line for merely talking about the subject at hand. Didn't know you had control over who can have opinions.

No they did not the flying on Lois & Clark was woeful at best. It never looked realistic
