The BBC and Fox will collaborate on a Buffy The Vampire Slayer spin-off starring Anthony Stewart Head entitled Ripper, according to a report.

The Daily Star quotes a source as saying that Buffy creator Josh Whedon is "keen to work with the BBC" and that "they've got the green light to start filming".

According to the alleged insider, Ripper, which has been mooted since Buffy finished in 2003, "will follow Bufyy's mentor Giles (Head) after he decides to come out of retirement in his native England to solve ghost stories and other mysteries".

The report claims that the show will enter production next year. The BBC has yet to confirm or deny the claims.

Great news if its true but im definately waiting for some proper confirmation, I do know though that Joss has mentioned recently that both he and Antony Head are still interested in doing it.

EDIT: According to Whedonesque to be taken with a very big pinch of salt

I heard about this a couple of weeks ago. If it does indeed go ahead, I'll be looking forward to it. I've always wanted to see more of pre-Sunnydale Giles.

I agree completely, but judging by that release it sounds more like a sequel/spinoff than something prior??

I mean, if he's coming out of retirement??

Either way, this is great. Something like this has true potential, and TV is sorely missing Joss Whedon.

the best part about this is the supposed BBC involvement which means we will get this at the same time as the US

The worst part would be that most bbc shows look like crap compared to the production values in the U.S. :down

thats probably where fox are going to come in. I remember fox/bbc doing the doctor who movie in 1996 and that looks better than some of the new series because of the money fox poured in. If it does happen I expect a shoot in Britain and maybe some post production in UK effects companies

It'd be great if Fox picked up the slack. The BBC seems to make a good partner when it's paired with rich American companies. They went halvesies on Rome and look how well that turned out. :)

I doubt it'll ever get anywhere near Rome's production values, but Fox should ensure it at least looks good.
