Burned Out With Comic Movie Genre

In a year with massively GOOD movies like DOFP, TWS, and GOTG it's hard to be burned out. In some ways I'm more excited than every before about what the future could bring! The unknown characters are going to become known and it is wonderful!

Yes. This. In complete agreement. Word for word.

I'm still watching the genre but the "fast food" label is on the money for the majority of these films as of late.

The fast food label may apply to how quickly they are being made and coming out, but we have pretty great films to boast about to any other film snob community out there. I just wished the online fandom in here would be more united. This whole Marvel vs DC thing is lame as ****.

What the genre needs is a director who'll give the audience a kick in the teeth. Someone who'll go beyond Nolan's work, or even Marvel's best. Give the audiences a superhero who uses his powers to fight against some socially ingrained evil. Like the modern slave trade. Treat the issue seriously, show the ugly side of it and a hero whose methods are just as ugly. If the audience doesn't squirm when they see the hero pursuing his or her justice, the director is doing it wrong. If the audience doesn't see the horrid deeds committed by the hero and villains as being symptomatic of a broken system, the director is doing it wrong.
I agree with most of this.I really want someone to come along and make something super innovative.I enjoyed Days of Future Past,Guardians, and The Winter Soldier (The combination of those 3 made me care about the genre again),but I would love it if someone did something totally outside the formula.

I know I'm in the minority with this ,but I'm really hoping Fantastic Four does that.

Agreed. hate the whole Marvel vs DC and Marvel vs Fox and Marvel vs Sony crap.

We're getting good to great movies from all studios, its a great time.

I felt TASM2 was the last kid picked in dodgeball.

I enjoyed 3 out of 4 of the big comic book films immensely, the 4th I that was alright but not as memorable as the other three...;)

All 4 of those studios has at some stage made a big contribution to comic film history and is part of the reason it is so successful now. Fox were in the doghouse quite recently and Sony are now but the early X-Men & Spider-man films are part of what saved the industry. Marvel DC wars are possibly the most stupid of all wars of that type I've ever seen when it's so easy to consume both and consuming one, both or neither has no impact on anything (unlike for eg buying a games console and missing out on certain game series). The one I can understand a little is wanting Sony & Fox to stuff up a little so that Marvel might get the rights to properties that would contribute to making the universe better but even then, that shouldn't be done without appreciatong the positive and crucial contribution from both of those studios.

I really don't think Guardians or Cap 2 can be called "cinematic fast food". Those are two pretty excellent movies; they may not break any new ground, but that isn't something to hold against them.

They are good movies, but I'm doubtful they're going to be looked back on in 5 years time with any real appreciation either, so I think I still would lump them into the the cinema fast food category. This era we live in is less about making impactful movies and pushing things forward and more about making things with simple stories and interesting enough characters, that may work fine but the issue is when you don't push things forward everything kinda becomes a bit a of a blur and easily forgotten. Planet of the Apes is really the only film this year to date that will leave any lasting impact due to its layered story, performances and technological wizardry.

Raiders of the lost ark didn't exactly "push things forward" or reinvent the wheel in terms of story or character. Why is that regarded as one of the best films of all time? By your own standards it should have been left in the 80s.
I heavily disagree with the notion (and find it a bit pretentious) that these movies are fast, cheap, hollow ventures will be forgotten in 5 years. I can guarantee you that will not be the case.

I was just wondering if there's anyone else in here just like me that's getting a little burned out by all the comic movies that have been flooding movie theaters lately. I seriously have not been enthusiastic about a comic related movie since The Avengers and Man Of Steel because of how many have been churned out since then. For me it was fine when they were only releasing one or two a year, but the massive influx has kind of left me bored with the genre.

Nope, Marvel's two comic films in 2014 are some of the best in the entire genre, and Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the movies that I have had a TON of Fun at.

I'm not sure if Apes will be the only such film, you're making a big claim :-)

Maybe the only scifi blockbuster... why not Snowpiercer?

I didn't know that Raiders is regarded as one of the best films of all time.

ETA: It's 30th on IMDB, fair enough.

TWS will definitely be remembered by Comic Fans, and GOTG will probably be remembered by both fans and GA alike. Not on the same level as TDK or Avengers, but it will be remembered, IMO.

It will be interesting to check back in ten years on what's actually remembered.

Tell somebody in 1994 that Shawshank would be the most remembered movie and they would not have believed you.

And they would have been right.

Pulp Fiction or Lion King is the most remembered movie of 1994.

Yes.

And there's no link between the two. I can love something and not think it's great.

There is a big difference between not agreeing with the consensus and being completely oblivious as to what it is.

I think DOFP would also be remembered at least by the fans, since it revived the franchise in the minds of the GA.

Well it kinda did actually push things forward, the last time anyone did heroic action adventurer style entertainment was about 30-40 years ago in serial format. After Raiders you saw a bunch of films being influenced in a similar style from Alan Quartermain to Romancing the Stone up until as recently as National Treasure. It's remember because it was one of the first to showcase a big scale fun adventure with a charismatic hero. Indiana Jones' influence is still being felt to this day across several mediums.

I never said cheap and hollow, they just don't have a lot going for them that isn't being done in a bunch of other films as well in this day in age, it just becomes another film in a line up of films doing similar things. The ones that stand out are the ones who try new things which is why the likes of Inception, Life of Pi and Gravity still resonates with people. Even Winter Soldier as good as it is doesn't really do anything that hasn't already been done by the likes of TDK and Skyfall already.
