Can Rock music be uber popular again?

My idea involves John Lennon, a shovel, and a ****load of electricity.

I don't think it matters. There are still people making good music in the genre, it doesn't need to be the main focus of the general populace.

The rock music that is popular these days isn't really rock music. It's either, really ****ty lounge music thats acceptable for all ages. Or it's whiney pop stuff.

If rock 40 years ago was like today, the beatles, the stones, jimi, etc. would probably not be recognized as good musicians

Because they wouldn't be.

You can talk about how cool it is being indie and underground all you want, but if the mainstream never hears you, you're not really making much of a living, which is important unless you like living in a cardboard box.

queens of the stone age.

'nuff said.

(i was at their concert last night in philly, i still can't hear.)

They're not that good.

Some people make music for the love of making music, not to make a living at it.

**** it. Listen to heavy metal.

Ill Eagle, I just removed all your posts-next time I'll remove you

theres tons of genuinely good rock music out there today. music thats just as good as what was going on in the 60's and 70's. the problem is its not in the mainstream. and the only way thats gonna change is if the music industry changes how it does business. specifically, the Clear Channel monopoly needs to be destroyed.

One of my favorite bands of all time, Sunny Day Real Estate, was killed because of the record companies. Same with Reggie and the Full Effect. You get semi popular with one style of music, and when a band might want to go another direction, the record companies wont let them.

yeah, but the record companies need to make money. and if their bands arent being played on the radio, then they're not gonna make money. and clear channel decides what goes on the radio. so, unfortunately, the big record labels have to conform to clear channels demands. fortunately, with the success of satellite radio along with the wide ranging self promotional resources of the internet, bands are finding newer successful avenues to reach audiences. eventually, clear channel will be powerless and big record labels will crumble.

Eh, that probably wont happen. Too much money in it. Even if CC crumbles, the record labels will still be around.

record labels will still be around, but they wont be nearly as powerful. i mean, there are bands that are getting very popular now a days strictly because of the internet, with no label support. if a label wants to get in on their rising popularity, then they have to buy into the band....rather than the band buying into the label.

Thats true. Myspace is a powerful medium right now. PureVolume is actually a pretty good site as well.

I'm not much a 'rockhead', but I do follow the genre from at least a general, mainstream perspective. And I've gotta tell you....people say hip hop's dead. But f*** that. Very rarely do I hear a rock act that actually turns my head. It all sounds the same to me.
