Can someone explain why Will Smith has lost a lot of his popularity?

The one thing that kind of, sort of is true coming from Jaden's mouth is apples were more nutritious in the 1950's but not 5 apples more nutritious. So even the one fact he sort of got right he still got wrong.

Will Smith's has an oldest son Trey stays out of the limelight and lives a normal life these days. Perhaps Will's younger kids may do the same when they are older. I don't blame them for wanting to act or sing if the opportunity is given to them.

Kissing guys on the cheek is not a normal greeting in the UK. A handshake, fist bump or that one handed bro half hug thing is how guys greet each other.
It was also reported when it happened, that the dude who kissed Will, is a television reporter who often kisses celebrities -- it's his schtick. Also apparently this is the same guy who grabbed DiCaprio's crotch, rubbed his face in Cooper's crotch, and ran up to the stage when Adele won a grammy. He trolls for attention when he has a chance towards celebrities.

He went under Amerigo Ferrera dress on the red carpet too

ill try the easy answer ERZ....
HIS BRAIN dumbed itself down to the KARDASHIAN level, since he was besties with them (kylie, chloe) and it *his brain* had to cope with small words that the kardashian family can understand.

i hope this helps explain it .
This is a crime on my eyes and ears.

I've got to be honest, that last tweet about the book store got me thinking a bit.

I think people still love Will Smith and he's still one of the few "movie stars" we have left. He's not one of those actors that puts out a film every year so when he does decide to do a film people pay attention.

I personally just think Will needs to stop doing these dark, dramatic roles and get back to doing roles that utilize his fun, charming personality. All the best Will Smith movies are the ones where Will is acting like himself. Hancock was crap, Seven Pounds was depressing, I didn't bother with After Earth, I am Legend...wasn't BAD, but wasn't great either (imo). Focus was a step in the right direction, I think. I really liked that movie and I thought it was a return to form. I'm not looking forward to Concussion because it looks like another attempt at Will trying to go dark and I just don't think that works out for him. I think Suicide Squad will be a true return to form and give us the charming, badass Will Smith from the 90's back.

I'm wondering how does back stock factor in? What if they are selling out on the floor, but replacing at a slow rate with a ton of back stock? What would that mean

This can mean both as I work in retail so if you have quite a few of an item this can mean that you sell it so often that your orders are higher or that no one has touched it. It's normally easy to spot if it is dusty on the outside of the product or not especially, I'd assume, if it was in a book store.

To say that blaming his son is an oversimplification is an understatement. Will Smith lost a lot of his popularity and drawing power for several other reasons.

1. He had a 4 years hiatus. There was a 4 year period where he wasn't in a single movie. Taking a hiatus even when you're one of the biggest stars in the world is risky.

2. His movies haven't been that good. both before the hiatus and after. Outside of MIB 3, none of his movies made big money (and even MIB 3 underpefrormed in the US). Even before his hiatus, he was losing steam with movies Hancock and Seven Pounds being disapppointments, and I Am Legend having a lukewarm reception.

You'd have to go back to Puruist of Happiness in 2006 to the last universally praised movie Will had. Which leads to Will Smith's biggest issue:

3. His movies choices are too safe
. He doesn't take risks. One of the biggest problems is that he always wants to be the squeaky clean hero. The biggest example of that is him infamously turning down Django Unchained (and his 1,000 excuses for turning it down). This is a movie that really could have brought his popularity back up (along with him working with a more talented director than he usually does) and shown that yes, he can be a more versatile actor willing to do more risky work. Instead, him turning it down further exacerbated the thought that Will Smith plays it too safe with his roles.

However, he is in Suicide Squad which seems out of the norm for him to take an ensemble role. So let's see what he does there and can he get some of that box office magic back.

I don't think his problem is that he does dark roles. I think the bigger problem was that those movies you mentioned weren't that good.

Also, think about the directors he worked with since he came back. Akiva Goldsman, M Night Shamalyan, Barry Sonnenfeld. Smith hasn't really worked with good directors.

Let's put it this way: Michael Bay is the best director Will Smith has worked with.
