Can this be the year of the Duke?

Light of day or darkest of night?

  • Come get some....in 09...only for the 360 and PC

  • It will come in 09, but not exclusive

  • Maybe timely exclusive, but not forever, oh yeah, and 09 release

  • It´s too early to talk about exclusivity as the game is not going to be released this year

  • The day it gets released is the day the Earth dies in a ball of flame

  • I just don´t care anymore

Duke Nukem Forever Still In Development

By Luke Plunkett, 5:30 AM on Tue Jun 23 2009

Getting slightly sick of all this to-and-fro myself, but if you're still hanging on the development status of Duke Nukem Forever, developers 3D Realms claim the game is still being worked on.

The disclosure can be found within court documents relating to the franchise, and specifically reads "[3D Realms/Apogee Ltd.] admits that it has continually worked on the development of the DNF for many years, and continues to do so".

In addition to this reveal, it seems publisher Take-Two began development of another Duke Nukem game, Duke Begins, in 2007. This title, however, was canned in April 2009, right around the time the publisher's support of Duke Nukem Forever dried up, leading to speculation that "Duke Begins" was as much a bargaining chip in negotiations with 3D Realms as it was a legitimate product.

Am I the only person in the world who reads all this and thinks "why?". This is Duke Nukem we're talking about here, not Halo. It stuns me that Take-Two continued to sink so much money (we're talking millions upon millions) into not Duke Nukem project (which this side of the 1990's was one too many), but two.

They won't.

Hell, they're so damn stubborn...they've just given us TWO Duke Nukem titles to mourn over.

Duke Nukem Begins developer revealed to be/have been Gearbox

Duke Begins developer revealed to be Gearbox Software
by Christopher Grant { Jul 14th 2009 at 2:25PM }

Shacknews reports that the developer of Duke Begins -- the Duke Nukem prequel project being developed not by 3D Realms, but rather by publisher Take-Two and a "well-known videogame developer" -- was, in fact, Gearbox Software. If that name sounds familiar that's because – like coffee shops and mysterious rashes – the Texas-based developer pops up all over the place, whether in reference to the long-overdue Aliens: Colonial Marines; the recently re-skinned Borderlands; or the oft-rumored Halo 4.

As revealed by recent court documents, Gearbox was brought on to develop Duke Begins following a 2007 agreement between 3D Realms and Take-Two. In exchange for the rights to make another Duke game, 3D Realms received a cool $2.5 million advance to help fund the ongoing development of Duke Nukem Forever (and, in turn, extend the practice of wondering aloud, "How on Earth can 3D Realms afford to keep making this game?").

3D Realms claims that the "halted" development of Duke Begins in April 2009 "materially harmed Apogee and/or will necessarily delay the commercial release of the Duke Begins game." They claimed that any such delay in release would "delay any royalty payments ... from sales of the Duke Begins game and prevent Apogee from being able to repay the [$2.5 million] advance when it becomes due in 2012." And now you begin to see where all this talk of lawsuits came from. We've put word into Gearbox and Take-Two and will let you know what we hear.

Doesn't look half-bad, but at this point, nothing anyone puts out under the name Duke Nukem Forever could ever live up to expectations.

Why did you bump this thread...? You could have just posted in the Gaming Lounge or something.

It's so much better with that tiny spark of hope before you actually get to the link, though. ;)

Is someone actually going to die because he posted it here and not there though?

This is a thread about how 2009 could have been the year of Duke Nukem Forever, and hasn't had a post in the better part of a year. It's also a dead product for all intents and purposes, and has been for a very long time. So, yeah, I kind of wonder why you bothered bumping a thread for unused footage when we have a lounge that tends to house misc. gaming news and articles. Especially when this thread was pointless to begin with, since no one with any sense thought the game was ever going to come out. Sure, you're free to, but it's almost the equivalent of bumping one of those years old versus threads. I usually like to ask why for those, too :O

God, I would love for them to release this game. Not finish it. Just release it in it's current busted-ass form. With maybe some introductions between scenes describing what's supposed to be going on in the story or maybe an anecdote about the creation of that portion of the game.

Short of that, I think someone that was on the inside should write a book about the development process.

I'm not even a fan of Duke Nukem, but I find the story behind this game absolutely fascinating.

Haha, I love how there is still news coming out surrounding this game even though it hasnt been relevant in ages

Duke Nukem Forever Lawsuit Settled

Take-Two settles with developer 3D Realms.

June 11, 2010

The legal battle surrounding Duke Nukem Forever is over.

A Take-Two representative confirmed to IGN this afternoon the company has settled with 3D Realms and has dismissed all litigation surrounding the game. A stipulation of dismissal with prejudice was filed on May 28, 2010, meaning the parties cannot be sued again on the same cause of action.

On May 17, 2009, Take-Two originally sued 3D Realms/Apogee Ltd for breach of contract for continuing to delay the release of the game. 3D Realms responded with a countersuit claim a month later saying Duke Nukem Forever was still in development.

"We can confirm that the matter has been resolved, and the company is not providing additional details of the agreement," said Alan Lewis, VP of Corporate Communications at Take-Two.

A 3D Realms representative told IGN the company is not providing comments on the matter.

It's unclear what this means for the development and eventual release of the game going forward. 3D Realms recently teased a new Duke Nukem announcement last year.

Duke Nukem Forever was first announced back 1997.

Potential new Duke Info

http://kotaku.com/5609770/rumor-borderlands-studio-reviving-duke-nukem-forever?skyline=true&s=i

There may be hope yet for the ludicrously long-in-the-making Duke Nukem Forever. Sources claiming to have knowledge of the situation tell Kotaku that Duke Nukem Forever development continues at a new home, Borderlands developer Gearbox Software.

The studio responsible for Brothers In Arms, Borderlands and Aliens: Colonial Marines is said to have picked up Duke Nukem Forever development where former studio 3D Realms left off, perhaps Duke's best bet for eventual completion.

Duke Nukem Forever, according to sources who wished to remain anonymous, is now in the hands of Gearbox and is planned to be released under the studio's name. Gearbox was outed as the developer of the apparently scrapped Duke Nukem spin-off Duke Begins earlier this year.
Take-Two Interactive still maintains publishing rights to the title, which the company confirmed to Kotaku tonight. (A company spokesperson declined to comment about the status of the Duke Nukem Forever project and whether it is in the works at Gearbox.)

One source indicated that a playable demo of Duke Nukem Forever will be available later this year.

The development of Duke Nukem Forever has been in limbo since 3D Realms' demise in 2009. Publisher Take-Two later sued 3D Realms for its failure to deliver Duke Nukem Forever in a reasonable time frame. The two parties settled their differences in May of 2010 under unspecified terms.

Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford declined to comment to Kotaku on the matter, indicating that he may be able to better clarify the situation further at this year's Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle.

3D Realms founder George Broussard, the man infamously in charge of Duke Nukem Forever, did not respond to requests for comment.

Given the nature of Duke Nukem Forever's long and storied history, we're filing this under rumor for now, but we'll be keeping a close eye on PAX-related developments for further details

Wait... So this game isn't dead yet!?

If this thing ever comes out it's going to have to be like, Starcraft 2 huge. It's been in development for 13 friggin' years so the end product had better deliver.

Yep, I've heard it from a few places. Looks like Gearbox is finishing the game...

It won't.

Haven't played a Duke game since the early 90's (Duke Nukem 3D?) the one where you kicked the alien's eyeball through the fieldgoal post. But I would buy this game day one just because of the legend. And also because I loved Borderlands.

They need to just offcially cancell Duke Nukem Forever once and for good. The game is a joke at this point and can never live up to the expectations and hype. They should kill the progect and start from scratch with a new game. Give it a new name , use a different engine and start with fresh ideas They should stop trying to build on what they have going with Forever. I didnt play Borderlands but it got alot of praise and I think these developers could do Duke justice. A modifed version of that engine, Duke's unique sense of humor and Gearbox's ideas and game mechanics could make for a decent title. it just shouldnt be a continuation of the Forever project

shocking new news.

source both games spot & orginally Kotaku

well if any one can make this franchise cool again it's the peeps that made borderlands.

Discussions in session.
