Zero Punctuation 'review' of Duke Nukem Forever (Warning: There's a lot of dirty words.)
By Luke Plunkett, 5:30 AM on Tue Jun 23 2009
Getting slightly sick of all this to-and-fro myself, but if you're still hanging on the development status of Duke Nukem Forever, developers 3D Realms claim the game is still being worked on.
The disclosure can be found within court documents relating to the franchise, and specifically reads "[3D Realms/Apogee Ltd.] admits that it has continually worked on the development of the DNF for many years, and continues to do so".
In addition to this reveal, it seems publisher Take-Two began development of another Duke Nukem game, Duke Begins, in 2007. This title, however, was canned in April 2009, right around the time the publisher's support of Duke Nukem Forever dried up, leading to speculation that "Duke Begins" was as much a bargaining chip in negotiations with 3D Realms as it was a legitimate product.
Am I the only person in the world who reads all this and thinks "why?". This is Duke Nukem we're talking about here, not Halo. It stuns me that Take-Two continued to sink so much money (we're talking millions upon millions) into not Duke Nukem project (which this side of the 1990's was one too many), but two.

Duke Nukem Begins developer revealed to be/have been Gearbox
Duke Begins developer revealed to be Gearbox Software
by Christopher Grant { Jul 14th 2009 at 2:25PM }
Shacknews reports that the developer of Duke Begins -- the Duke Nukem prequel project being developed not by 3D Realms, but rather by publisher Take-Two and a "well-known videogame developer" -- was, in fact, Gearbox Software. If that name sounds familiar that's because like coffee shops and mysterious rashes the Texas-based developer pops up all over the place, whether in reference to the long-overdue Aliens: Colonial Marines; the recently re-skinned Borderlands; or the oft-rumored Halo 4.
As revealed by recent court documents, Gearbox was brought on to develop Duke Begins following a 2007 agreement between 3D Realms and Take-Two. In exchange for the rights to make another Duke game, 3D Realms received a cool $2.5 million advance to help fund the ongoing development of Duke Nukem Forever (and, in turn, extend the practice of wondering aloud, "How on Earth can 3D Realms afford to keep making this game?").
3D Realms claims that the "halted" development of Duke Begins in April 2009 "materially harmed Apogee and/or will necessarily delay the commercial release of the Duke Begins game." They claimed that any such delay in release would "delay any royalty payments ... from sales of the Duke Begins game and prevent Apogee from being able to repay the [$2.5 million] advance when it becomes due in 2012." And now you begin to see where all this talk of lawsuits came from. We've put word into Gearbox and Take-Two and will let you know what we hear.
Why did you bump this thread...? You could have just posted in the Gaming Lounge or something.

Duke Nukem Forever Lawsuit Settled
Take-Two settles with developer 3D Realms.
June 11, 2010
The legal battle surrounding Duke Nukem Forever is over.
A Take-Two representative confirmed to IGN this afternoon the company has settled with 3D Realms and has dismissed all litigation surrounding the game. A stipulation of dismissal with prejudice was filed on May 28, 2010, meaning the parties cannot be sued again on the same cause of action.
On May 17, 2009, Take-Two originally sued 3D Realms/Apogee Ltd for breach of contract for continuing to delay the release of the game. 3D Realms responded with a countersuit claim a month later saying Duke Nukem Forever was still in development.
"We can confirm that the matter has been resolved, and the company is not providing additional details of the agreement," said Alan Lewis, VP of Corporate Communications at Take-Two.
A 3D Realms representative told IGN the company is not providing comments on the matter.
It's unclear what this means for the development and eventual release of the game going forward. 3D Realms recently teased a new Duke Nukem announcement last year.
Duke Nukem Forever was first announced back 1997.
Wait... So this game isn't dead yet!?
If this thing ever comes out it's going to have to be like, Starcraft 2 huge. It's been in development for 13 friggin' years so the end product had better deliver.
They need to just offcially cancell Duke Nukem Forever once and for good. The game is a joke at this point and can never live up to the expectations and hype. They should kill the progect and start from scratch with a new game. Give it a new name , use a different engine and start with fresh ideas They should stop trying to build on what they have going with Forever. I didnt play Borderlands but it got alot of praise and I think these developers could do Duke justice. A modifed version of that engine, Duke's unique sense of humor and Gearbox's ideas and game mechanics could make for a decent title. it just shouldnt be a continuation of the Forever projectWait... So this game isn't dead yet!?
