I've always been fond of the few recurring villains in past Bond movies, such as Blofeld, Jaws, and S.P.E.C.T.R.E. as a whole, and I was wondering if they should/will introduce a new one in Casino Royale.

I purposely haven't been following a lot of the news from this film because I don't want to be too spoiled, so I don't know if they will or not, but I am interested in your thoughts on this.

I actually thought the recurring villains were always pretty cheesy and one of the most obnoxious parts of the Bond series.

Well before it turned into a big joke with the volcano lairs and diamond lasers, I think the whole thing with Blofeld in the shadows worked really well. I think that might be the way to go with a new villain should they do that.

Well.......

it has been rumored that a character that appears in Casino Royale might become a new recurring villain.

Yeah, that's a good point. Blofeld worked better when you didn't actually know who he was and couldn't see him.

I have thought the same thing for a while now. Xenia Onatopp from "Goldeneye" would have been a great recurring villain. I think the key is not to try and imitate Blofeld. Instead, create a henchman-type character who can recur. That way, you get new villains, new evil schemes, and your recurring character can pop up working for whatever new villain appears in the new film.

I've read in a couple articles that there WILL be a recurring villain. His name: Mr. White. As far as I know he will only have a minor role in this film, and will start to make more appearances as the new films come about. The idea for his character is EON's apparent response to being banned from using the Blofeld character in future films and the SPECTRE organization, which in the future films surely will be some sort of terror group to fit in with the times.

006 was a great opportunity to create a nemesis for Bond, an equal. BUt they killed him off, waste of potential.

I'd like it if they planned ahead of time a bit, make a trilogy rather than the hollow fractured films they are currently.

a trilogy would be awesome........

but that might signal the end of Bond forever

^Reoccuring baddies to get exhausted and cheesy. Jaws got cheesier each film and then he went f'ing good...WTF! I would only like a villian to come back if he is in fact an evil equal to bond. Like someone mentioned above...having 006 come back would have been great but they killed him off. Maybe another double 0 might pop in and out in another movie.

If overdone, it's a bit irritating, but recurring villains help to bring a sense of continuity and their resilience gives them an aura of menace that has been quite helpful to the franchise. When Bond was fighting SPECTRE in the old days, you knew he was against a terrible adversary, resourceful, resilient, diabolical.

I am all in favor of a return to recurring adversaries, if it's well done.

I think recurring villains work better when they are mastermind villains, for the reasons stated above. Blofeld was turned into a joke because they didn't kill him in time, i.e. much earlier in the franchise. I think the new series could base a villain on the novel Blofeld, and have him fight Bond during 2-3 movies, indirectly then directly.

I actually thought that Xao was the only good thing about DAD, and that he had the potential to be a great recurring villain in the tradition of Blofeld, Jaws etc.

But then they killed him.

Bit of a moot point anyway, seeing as how they've started from scratch with CR.

I was thinking the same thing about him back when DAD first came out. Being a diamond-faced freak was visually interesting, the same way Jaws' teeth, and Blofeld's baldness and cat, were visually interesting. It's that visual distinction that makes recurring villains recognizable to audiences and helps to better make you believe that the movies exist in the same stylized universe.

But, as you said, it's a moot point now anyways.

And they killed him in a very poor fashion. That said, I am glad DAd choked itself in its ridicule, and nothing from it, not even that Jinx spin off project, will reappear in a Bond movie. A Zao-like character could be possible, but obviously not Zao himself. I would love to see a former Yakuza with loads of tattoos as a henchman. I am a bit tired of the Aryan type of henchmen. They never got any better than Grant.

And they never got any worse than Stamper.

I think it would be cool to have a henchman type of character appear in a couple of Bond films then make him the main villian for a film!

I think it would be really neat to stick him in the background in a couple of scenes, and have the camera not even focuse on him. Have him appear without giving any visual clues to suggest he will be in any more Bond films or will be a major villian in a film. Part of the fun would be rewatching the earlier Bond films to see a glimpse of him before he even knew Bond or Bond even knew him!

They don't do that these days though, they force feed us and have to explain everything to the viewers :whatever:

Your excited use of exclamation points gives me an erection.

i miss spectre

Same here. It would be great to see SPECTRE reinvented for the modern world. Shame we won't see that happen at least until Kevin McClory dies but then there may still be trouble with his estate.

yeah, spectre was scarey. just a powerful organization that was always lurking in the background. seeing craig's bond go against a modern version of that would be tight as all ****.

I heard another Dane, Jesper Christensens' role might be a recurring one as a mysterious Mr. White.

Dalip Singh should be the new Jaws. he looks quite a bit like Richard Keil, i mean he played Keils part in the remake of Longest Yard, but hes gotta way bigger muscles which is good.
