I don't see why it's necessary to sacrfice the thickness of the neck to allow for movement. Why not use some sort of light-weight padding on the inside of the neck-piece, that still allows for movement? Sort of build it out from the actual thickness of Bale's neck.

That's basically how I've always seen it. It's not a terrible design, it's just way too shiny, and fake looking. Some of the fan versions actually look better.
