Cast A Sandman Movie

The Question said:
Personally, I'd just turn each volume into a film. It would make a very long film series, but that would be the only way to really capture the essence of Sandman. Also, here are my casting suggestions from the "cast the DC universe" thread:

Destiny: David Strathairn

Death: Summer Glau

Dream: Alan Rickman

Destruction: Sean Astin

Despair: Kathy Bates

Desire: Jamie Lee Curtis

Delirium: Anna Paquin

Nice, another vote for Rickman! Paquin's an interesting choice for Delirium, but do you think she could really play the part of innocence lost to manic depresion? I still say that Rhys-Myers is an awesome choice for Desire, I mean just look at Velvet Goldmine. I don't like Sean Astin. He's not nearly rugged enough for Destruction. I'm interested in Glau, I'm worried she might be a bit too young for the part, but I applaud the suggestion.

In terms of just translating each volume. The problem with that would be: how do you turn books like Dream Country, Fables And Reflections, The World's End, A Game Of You, or even The Wake into movies that could work? I don't think you can just translate Sandman directly to the screen. It really has to be addapted. The themes of the short stories need to be made to fit into the larger narrative and unfortunatly, you do kind of need to focus on one main theme (for me that is Morpheus' redemtion with Orpheus but there could be other ways).

He really is Dream.

She's a really really good actress. Won an acadamy award for best supporting actress when she was ten years old. She could pull it off.

Never saw it, but I'll take your word for it.

I think he could do the part justice. I actually think he looks a bit like Destruction myself. My main problem is the fact that he's not friggin huge like Destruction. But the right camera angles can take care of that.

She's actualy 25. She's just capable of playing younger quite well. She can also play the parts of adults quite convincingly. Besides, even though Death is the second oldest, she's always looked younger than all of them, besides Delirium. Funny, I actually considered Glau for Delirium. But, she looks alot more like Death, and Paquin is a few years younger than her.

Just don't make them into standard movies. Some volumes are simply a collection of short stories. So, have the movie based on that volume be a collection of short stories. Sandman movies should have very artistic feels to them. Like a really good indapendant film with a hollywood budget.

Well, while he may be a good actor, I find that when a woman plays adronginous, she looks androginous. When a man plays andorginous, he just looks a really really fruity man.

Check the link. He can look insanely androgenous. It's just harder to find pics that hot link.

You have a point. I just think casting a woman for the part would work alot better.

As far as Abel goes, there is only one choice for me: John Rhys-Davies

I'm torn on Cumming as Lucien. On the one hand he beats the crap out of just about any other suggestion I've heard, on the other I can't shake the feeling that there is somebody better for the part. Untill further notice, however, I'm sold.

I'd never buy him as a whimp who gets beat up by his scrawny brother. Billy West could sell that much better.

Ohhh but I wanna see him play a whimp soooooo bad. You know he's a good enough actor to pull it off, he just got insanely typecasted. I think it would be awesome if he could totally screw with people's expectations.

Cool. So, who are the other characters from the Sandman books? Hell, who would you cast as the suns from the Dream story in Endless Nights?

I think we should cast the tripple goddess first as she/s' rather important.

Okay. I only have volumes one through four, volume nine which I don;t want to read before I have the others, Death: The high cost of living, and Endless Nights.

Oh, wow... you've got some reading to catch up on there.

Another set of real important characters to cast are Loki and Puck (you'll see why)

We also need to cast Rose, Lyta, and Thessaly.

I know nothing about Sandman, but maybe Rachel Weistz should be Death.

I can imagine so.

Damn. Rose. Forgot about her. Let me think a bit on that.

No. Too old, I'd say. Death is usually portrayed as rather young looking. Late teens/early 20s.

True, but Gaiman is just too fun lovin a guy to pull off a convincing Dream.

Found a better Lucien: Jonathan Pryce

Anything from the motha'f**ka' from Tomorrow Never Dies is cool in my book.

Question, though: Do you mean Lucien or Lucifer? I'm sorry, I've only read, like, some of the middle and the last two (stupid, I know, but it's the only ones I could actually find).
