Cast The Movie In A Previous Time

How about Brock Peters (who subbed for James Earl Jones as Darth Vader in the Star Wars radio adaptations) as an alternate choice for Thulsa Doom?

Lack of fight scenes aside, Thulsa Doom still needed a certain physical presence, which I think James Earl Jones had in addition to that deep, thundering voice of his, so Woody Strode's own imposing physique wouldn't have been completely wasted as he needed that certain presence opposite other similarly big men.

Was Brock Peters around in the 1950's?

But point taken about Thulsa Doom needing to be an imposing figure.

Yeah, Brock Peters made his film debut in 1954's "Carmen Jones" opposite Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge.

Fun fact - Brock sang background vocals on Belafonte's 1956 hit "The Banana Boat Song".

Cool choices, especially Paul Newman as Nite Owl 1/Hollis Mason

I look all of those except for Williams. I never understood why he was such a popular choice.

How about Barry Pepper?

Robin Williams or bust.

When I first read the comic, I imagined his voice, speaking in a creepy sort of monotone. Now, unfortunately, I've got Jackie Earle Haley's Christian Bale bat-voice kicking around in my head. Not the same.

Yeah, I'm reasonably sure that about 1/2 or 2/3 of that cast was rumored for the project at some point or another. I believe Cusack himself said he was interested at one point.

Oh, **** yeah.

In general, I think Snyder's movie gets more grief than it really deserves (especially considering the directions the project could've taken, based on previous drafts of the screenplay), but one of the things I really hated about the movie was that they used the same actress for young and old Sally Jupiter. Gugino is a decent enough actress, but she just didn't sell being aged.

I actually really like the cast Snyder put together for his movie except, I think, for Matthew Goode. He came off as disinterested.

I think a then unknown Michael Fassbender (who worked with Zack on 300) would have been a better choice.

Edit: just to nitpick a bit, I might have gone with Jessica Lange as Sally, though the flashback scene might not have worked that well.

I like that casting. I'm not too sure about Robin Williams as Rorschach/Walter Kovach though. I like Robin Williams, I just don't know if he'd be right for the role, even in 1990.

I could totally see a John Carpenter Watchmen going with that cast.

Hope I'm not too late to the party:

1990. HBO picks up the rights for Watchmen with the idea of making a five-hour miniseries after Lawrence Gordon sells them deeming the material "unfilmable". David Lynch, interested on doing TV for some change, makes a deal to develop the miniseries with the help of Mark Frost. Watchmen is released in 1991 to mixed reviews, with critics praising the acting and the surreal visuals but criticizing it for being "a mess", "unaccesible" and "unfocused" as well as for being unfaithful to the source material. Despite the mixed reception, Watchmen garners Emmy nominations for Dourif and Lynch, as well as technical nods for Makeup, Art Direction, Special Effects and Music. While infamous between fans of the graphic novel, Watchmen ahieved cult status, especially by fans of Lynch work.

I was thinking of a Lynch Watchmen too, with Laura Dern as Laurie and Diane Ladd as Sally Jupiter.

After Star Trek: Generations' killing of William Shatner's Captain Kirk caused widespread fan outcry, and the realization that the cast of The Next Generation would spawn no more good sequels post-First Contact, Paramount Pictures came to the decision to revisit James T. Kirk, not in his later years, but rather at the beginning. Before the Five Year Mission...
