I've already corrected people in this thread about four times.

If you're recasting The Terminator with Jennifer Lawrence as Sara Connor, Channing Tatum as Kyle Reese, and Dave Batista as the Terminator, you're casting a modern day remake of an older movie.

If you recast The Terminator with Raquel Welch as Sara Connor, Charlton Heston as Kyle Reese, and Steve Reeves as The Terminator, then you're recasting a modern day movie in a previous time.

It's 1969. After the TV series starring Adam West fizzles out, DC decides to reboot Batman to attract a new audience, creating a more serious, mature Batman film series. Everyone in Hollywood seems to think it's a bad idea until rising young director William Friedkin comes on board as director, and 39-year-old Clint Eastwood, then working his way out of his TV career to break into films himself, agrees to star as Batman. The first film is a huge hit, leading to several more sequels over the next 15 years or so from different directors such as John Milius, Alan J Pakula, Brian De Palma, and even Eastwood himself.

Now there's an interesting concept; even with the Cold War brewing, the 50's were a time when people were very optimistic about the future and all the glorious possibilities on the horizon. A story about a future where we blow ourselves up and our technology enslaves us would have been quite a subversion indeed.

Americans and the world at large in the 1950's were also very frightened of Nuclear War. This was shown in several horror and science fiction movies. Godzilla and The Fly are two prime examples of this in effect. There are probably many more lesser known examples throughout the 1950's. So a science fiction movie about us blowing ourselves up in the 1950's isn't that big of a stretch.
