I'm really looking forward to this, but I wonder, what'll happen when CFE does all the logical ideas for Top 100's? Will we get some really arbitrary categories, like Top 100 Arnold Schwarzenegger Films, or the Top 100 Films starring a dog (Old Yeller better be #1 there :cmad:)?

I just realized you posted my Sci Fi super trailer. :D

I have a strong prediction of what the number one spot will be. Can't wait to see how this list pans out.

Loved the video with Nine Inch Nails' "The Warning".

I'm looking forward to this.

I'm curious where the boundaries will be set.

There are plenty of movies with science fiction aspects to them that aren't necessarily thought of as "science fiction". Most superhero movies, for instance, have a psuedo-scientific premise to them, even Nolan's Batman movies have stuff like futuristic microwave emitters and cell phone sonar.

Then there are the horror hybrids. Anything with aliens, for instance, which would include The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Alien, etc. The Fly is based around a teleportation experiment. The various Frankenstein movies are based on the premise of a scientist going too far.

So, what's the definition of science fiction you're using?

While a list of films based on Comic Books was significantly easier, you're right about the boundaries of Science Fiction...it's such a vast field that, in the end, it's all a matter of what I personally feel best defines the genre.

But it's hard...this list has be re-worked twice as many times as the Comic Book one.

Yeah, I don't envy you trying to put together this sort of list. The field is very broad and the boundaries aren't clear.

One to consider, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

The boundaries not being clear should make this list easier to make, not harder.

From Georges Melies to Distict 9, there sure is a lot of ground to cover.
I hope there is a lot of the great scifi from the 70's, like Soylent Green, Silent Running, 2001, etc... and don't forget Woody Allen's Sleeper please:grin:

making the list...sure.

narrowing it down to 100...not so much.

In fact I'm working on an additional list of 25 that are non-ranked...just because there are so many.

My thought is that having fuzzy boundaries will make it really easy to come up with 100 great films. OTOH, the fuzzy boundaries raise the "what about..." questions. Or, is it in the genre or not? Or, it's a great movie, but is it a great example of science fiction?

There's a fairly objective measure of what's a comic book movie or not. Science fiction is much more open to debate. Heck, "Star Wars science fiction or fantasy?" is a classic debate.

We're not going to answer the question here, and it's CFE's list so whatever he says goes as far as the list, but I think it's always going to be an interesting question.
