Chapter 55 - "Into Asylum" Discussion Thread - 3/30/09

The problem is, Sylar is too damn powerful now. Who really can fight back? They've depowered Peter to the point where even he can't give an honest fight (Though I'm guessing baby Parkman will fix it).

Any how, just finished last night's episode. It was pretty damn solid. This is what I've been saying all season. The writers finally played to their strengths. They focused on the Petrellis and the Danko subplots and it made for a good episode. There were no wacky babysitting adventures of Hiro and Ando. Claire wasn't running about helping aqua teens and playing with comic nerds. Even Sylar was good for the first time in a long time. The writers cut off the fat and only gave us the meat and it was the best episode in a long time. Hopefully they keep it up.

My point is, if Danko is capable of launching a black op on foreign soil to capture the head of a prominent Japanese corporation with no provokation or warrant, I'm pretty sure he could get a team into Mexico. Especially when extradition with Mexico isn't nearly as hard as you act. Especially since the signing of NAFTA when Mexico's economy became dependent on ours. The implication was that Danko was not capable of getting people from a foreign country, when he obviously is.

Trust me, if Danko is as powerful as he seems to be, he can launch a black bag operation on almost any country he wants. I was pointing out that a lot of these Special Operators are already stationed in Japan, waiting to be called in at any moment. Danko could have setup the bag and tag of Hiro and Ando withing minutes of a phone call.

The point Nathan seems to be making is, Danko still has no established network for his operations in Mexico, considering it's relatively new. You'd need a pretty good network in place to get special fugitives on your radar quickly; fugitives that can literally drop in and out of an area in an instant.

Hiro and Ando were well-known players known to be in Japan. Not to mention one of them happens to be the CEO of a large Japanese company. Not exactly rocket science tracking those two down, and bagging them.

I'm surprised no one mentioned (asked) how the shapshifter was able to turn into Sylar. It was pretty obvious that to turn into someone he had to touch them. When did that happen? What about his clothes, do they have the ability to change as well?:whatever:

I'm also curious how Sylar stole this guy's power without slicing his head open. Maybe they'll show that again later. I'm still waiting for an all out fight between Sylar and someone who can fight back.

Way back when they were trying to make Sylar a good guy, he was being trained to use his power without slicing people open. He could use a sort of superhuman empathy/sympathy. I don't know. But Superman did something halfway similar in the comics where he essentially lobotomized an enemy by firing a microscopic heat ray through the guy's eye like a focused laser, eliminating the part of the guy's brain responsible for his power, without killing him or causing any kind of brain damage. I don't know, it's comic book science!!!

Anyone else notice the end with Sylar and Danko was a total riff on F/X? :woot: I half-expected "Illusion" to start playing as they drove off!!!

When Sylar was walking around the club looking for him (after he vanished as Danko), they bumped into one another I believe. Sylar had a weird look on his face, so I assumed something was up.

I was expecting you to not enjoy this one by default, but honestly I didn't really enjoy the episode all that much. Not to say it wasn't good, but sometimes there are elements of the show I prefer over others, like the antics of Hiro/Ando. I felt the episode was too slow and dull for my tastes. Different strokes for different folks.

I really liked this ep
it felt more like the older events of heroes
more focused on central characters
and driven by the immediate story, not the overall
I enjoyed seeing HRG having to hunt down Angela
only to let her go at the last second
interesting that it looked like Mama P wasn't sure what was going to happen when he caught her
I guess when he opened the confessional door was when she woke up
and love the fact that it looks like the Petrellis are getting back togther
Go super family GO!

I'm hoping this season ends with a battle between Sylar and all the Heroes. Now that he's working for Danko it's the perfect set up and I'm sure that's the only way they could really destroy him because as it was said Sylar is way too powerful now.

This episode was pretty good, but it was a bit too slow. Danko and Sylar working together was the most exciting part, but it was still nice to get some development for the Heroes.

So Sylar used empathy to copy the shapeshifter's power right? I hope he used some sort of mental projection ability to talk with Danko in his car. If it was teleportation, then I think he'd be too powerful to defeat.

I like the father/daughter mother/son moments in the ep.

I wonder if Angela's sister is going to have wings.

I like how they made shapeshifting hurt like a ***** to pull off.

When are these people going to learn that to kill someone like Sylar they need to cut his ****ing head off?! Great, you've jammed something in his brain to stop him from reanimating, now finish the job and cut his ****ing head off! Also, just to be absolutely sure he never returns, mix a fresh batch of C-ment, shove the head in it and let it set, then drop it into the Marianas Trench.

Yeah they need to explain the Sylar teleportation thing.

I think I'm the only one that disliked the episode. Angela Petrelli was great, the music and the ending was great. The Sylar/Danko thing was decent until they turned into Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson (with a dash of Freud). Just a bit too much. And Peter arguing with Jesus was too forced. So was the whole Claire/Nathan "I hate him, now I like him, now I hate him..." routine. She's always pissed at someone, especially her two fathers. I would be surprised if she doesn't become a porn star with all these daddy issues.

Well Sylar does have empathy so i guess he used that. I think he shouldnt even have to slice heads because he should be able to see how the brain works when just looking at someone with his intuitive aptitude. Im saying this because when has he ever had to break open a watch to know whats wrong with it. Know what im sayin

I think Sylar was using some kind of telepathy to talk to Danko...did he ever get that? Can't keep track anymore. The not cutting the guys head off was used when he took Elle's power without killing her(a random and kind of unnecessary part of Sylar's power)

Angela is probably my favorite character right now....hopefully they dont pull what they usually do and kill a character once they start getting really good(Elle, Knox, Meredith, Tracy ect..)

And kill Nathan, he is BEYOND redemption.

That episode was just not bad. Good? Meh. Slow.

Good episode back to basics living normal lives with powers nothing to over the top.

That scene in general made me wonder. I always assumed Peter would get all of his empathic power back, so their would be someone with abilities on the same level as Sylar. Then when Matt Jr's ability was revealed, I was leaning toward the combination of Matt Jr and Ando giving Peter back all of his ability. But the "Peter talking to God" scene kind of has me worried that the writers might try giving Peter his full ability back through divine intervention, which would be lame to say the least.

The jesus scene with Peter was used IMO to hint that Peters powers are still working normal only that since they are based on empathy and he´s become jaded and removed from everyone he´s lost his ability to instantly feel empathy towards people. The only way he now makes connections with people is with direct, physical contact.

If he can regain his trust in people then he will get his normal powers back.

That was my understanding of it too. Peter has been hurt and betrayed by so many close to him, he is closing himself off from people. He has to make the effort to reach out to others so he can only absorb through contact now.

The whole looking inward and self-struggle concept has definitely been used in the past, and I agree that this is where the scene was meant to go. I just think it was really poorly done.

Now that Im thinking about it I love jaded pessimistic Peter. Him always being the beacon of hope and light gets real old. We need to see him evolve as a human being and any person in his place would start getting really bitter and resentful about everything. I just hope that some the character development that has happened this volume sticks around for awhile. I think one of the problems so far is that all the volumes have felt to contained to there own stories and the characters have seemed like they totally change at the beginning and the end of each one. There needs to be more fleshed out characters and deep and interesting storylines instead of rehashed comic book arcs. But they are on the right track right now so lets hope vol 5 will be this good! Oh and I think what we really need with this show is alot more cultural and political relevancy!

Yeah I was really surprised that he didn't dream the future or take on powers around him(i.e get his old powers back) after that scene. I like him less powered just because the writers don't know what to do with him when he is all powerful. Maybe just put a cap on how many powers he can have at once.

The bitter, pessimistic Peter kinda reminds me of Future Peter, dontcha think? And I agree, seeing his character go in a different direction really makes things more interesting. It's great to see another dimension to his character, to see him go to a dark place and become less naive. Maybe he'll begin to realize what made Angela who she is today, how there's more to her story than just being born a manipulative, calculating woman--she learned her wiles from somewhere, and out of necessity at some point.

Sylar as the last super powered person, Interesting

.

I think he was using Hannah's illusion powers
