I hear Syfy is ordering to production Childhood’s End, a four-hour miniseries adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End from The Social Network producer Michael De Luca.British helmer Nick Hurran (Doctor Wh0) has come on board to direct the mini, which follows a peaceful alien invasion of Earth by the mysterious Overlords, whose arrival ends all war and turns the planet into a near-utopia. Childhood’s End, produced by UCP, was one of several long-form projects announced at Syfy’s 2013 upfront, before the network made a change in the top programming post, with Bill McGoldrick replacing Mark Stern. (Stern has since been tapped to run IM Global’s TV venture.) Childhood’s End is the first project from that slate to get a green light at Syfy. Another, The Man In The High Castle, was recently picked up to pilot at Amazon.

Syfy today announced that it is greenlighting a six-hour miniseries based on Arthur C. Clarke's classic "Childhood's End." The series will premiere in 2015.

In making the announcement, Dave Howe, President, Syfy, said: "As we aggressively develop scripted programming over a diverse creative landscape, we want our content to reflect the greatest sci-fi stories from the past and the present. The powerful themes of Childhood's End, from the fearsome price of peace and prosperity, to the very question of what constitutes a human being, remain fascinating and timeless. This will be the most ambitious project for Syfy in many years."

Akiva Goldsman (Lone Survivor, A Beautiful Mind, I Am Legend) and Mike De Luca (Captain Philips, Moneyball, The Social Network) are attached as executive producers. "Childhood's End" will be adapted by Matthew Graham (creator of BBC's "Life on Mars" and "Ashes to Ashes"). Universal Cable Productions will be the studio.

The miniseries will be directed by Nick Hurran, who received a 2014 Emmy Award nomination for "Sherlock: His Last Vow" and a Hugo Award nomination for "Doctor Who."

Additional behind-the-scenes credits include Emmy Award winners Neville Kidd (Director of Photography) and Yan Miles (Editor). Both were just honored by the Academy for their work in "Sherlock: His Last Vow."

Hailed as a revolutionary work of science fiction since its publishing in 1953, "Childhood's End" follows the peaceful alien invasion of Earth by the mysterious "Overlords," whose arrival begins decades of apparent utopia under indirect alien rule, at the cost of human identity and culture.

Charles Dance Joins

Dance plays Karellen, the ambassador for the Overlords who makes first contact with Earthling Ricky Stormgren (not yet cast). We’re told that “Karellen’s comforting words and amazing technological gifts quickly win humanity’s favor, beginning decades of apparent utopia at the cost of human identity and culture. However, his refusal to reveal his physical appearance and insistence on dealing only through Ricky have some people questioning whether his intentions are truly benevolent.”

Syfy’s Childhood’s End has found its lead: EW can exclusively report the miniseries has cast Mike Vogel (Under the Dome, Bates Motel) as Ricky Stormgren, a midwestern farmer whose life is turned upside down when he is chosen to be the sole representative on Earth for an alien species apparently seeking to aide humanity. “Ricky struggles with his new-found fame as a blue collar prophet, facing the weight of the entire world looking to him for answers.”

Vogel joins Emmy nominee Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), who will portray the alien Overlord Karellen, along with Ashley Zukerman (Manhattan) and Osy Ikhile (Clap!).

Childhood’s End is a six-hour miniseries adapted from Arthur C. Clarke’s 1953 novel and is produced by Akiva Goldsman (Lone Survivor) and Mike DeLuca (Captain Philips), with writer Matthew Graham (BBC’s Life on Mars). The show will premiere next year and is one of several productions embracing traditional science fiction that are in the works at Syfy.
Here's hoping this turns out less awful than Under The Dome has.

I´ve always liked the character he plays in "Under the Dome" so hopefully he will manage to make this one likable as well.

I have a family member in Australia right now working on this. I've told them to tell Charles Dance that he is awesome on Game of Thrones.

Premieres tonight.

My step dad worked on this, went to Australia for like 6 months. He met Charles Dance in the washroom, didn't understand why I laughed as hard when he told me that until I brought him up to speed on Game of Thrones.

so far seems good, kind of surprised consider syfy has screw up before

Pretty damn good. That is some good old fashioned Sci-fi Channel mini-series right there.

Well that ending was freaky as ****.

Just finished watching this. I really enjoyed it. The ending was unexpected and oddly refreshing. And yeah, it's got that old school feel to it.

Asking the question: why hasn't this classic A.C. Clarke story received more coverage?

I am still waiting for info on a DVD here in Australia. I understand that this got some pretty good reviews but very little news about being able to watch it.
