Nolan has no idea about how loony some of his fanbase is. He is drinking tea somewhere and working on a three thousand puzzle piece; without using the box.

Emma: Darling, the veggies are ready.

Nolan: Who ate all the bloody salted pork?

Lol, pretty much. I think staying away from the internet probably does wonders for one's sanity.

How are these two even in the same category? Their styles are completely different.

This was an EXTREMELY tough decision for me to make. The Prestige, Inception , and The Dark Knight are some of my favorite films, but then again so are Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Django Unchained. But if I had to pick one, it'd be Tarantino, because I find his films to have more rematch value, which is one of the most important, if not THE most important marks of a great film.

As if the Tarantinoites are any better.

They both have the same number of directorial credits, and Nolan's resume easily rivals Quentin's. Nolan is also far more notorious than Quentin in pop culture cinema in a positive way.

Many would say they're blatant ripoffs of other films that plagiarize their style.

There is nothing Pseudo about any of his films. They are all legitimately dripping with intelligence, wit and verisimilitude.

Very few of his films have a fun factor. They're in love with people talking in meandering dialogue that has nothing to do with the plot or characters.

Memento was a far more successful film than Reservoir Dogs and Insomnia easily rivaled Pulp Fiction. So no, if it weren't for Batman, Nolan would simply have had more time to devote to films like Inception and The Prestige. He was destined to be huge regardless of what path he took.

10 years from now, Nolan's name will be worth more than all the Tarantinos, Spielbergs and Kubricks ever were, combined.

Oh and BTW I'm not a diehard Tarantino fan. I can recognize when he's screws the pooch (Death Proof) and his unusual love of dropping the N word as much as he can (which is so unnecessary. Dead ****** storage? Come on). I don't even think Pulp Fiction is his absolute best. It's an amazing film, but I much prefer something like Jackie Brown. My thing is would anyone here be *********ing as hard to Nolan had he not done a pretty OK job with two Batman films? Probably not. Would he have a decent career after Memento and Insomnia? Yeah. No doubt. But I highly, highly, highly doubt he'd have the level of godhood so many label him with were it not for two decent Batman films.

Even if he didn't do the Batman films, he'd still be on my Top 10, heck maybe even Top 5 because of The Prestige and Inception.

Also, while this has been a pretty fun thread, I think a better matchup would be Quentin Tarantino vs. The Coen Brothers.

It would be worth obliterating the whole of Christopher Nolan's oeuvre just to save Pulp Fiction.

I see more talk ABOUT Nolan fanboys than actual Nolan fanboys.

Take The Dark Knight Trilogy out of his filmography and Memento, The Prestige, Inception and Interstellar would be a pretty damn impressive resume in and of itself. Of course, the latter two films wouldn't have gotten made if not for the success of TDK.

Point being, it's kind of a pointless "what if" scenario. It's the same as if I were to say that Nolan would still have a very devoted following and be an indie darling to this day if he had never went mainstream, and would almost certainly have less haters too. Doing Batman just made him more famous, which gave him more extreme fans AND haters.

At the end of the day, he is a filmmaker who started small out of necessity but always had the aspirations to make bigger films. He created his own opportunities and attracted incredible talent to his side across the board because of his reputation. His success is not some fluke. It's not like whoever had taken on the Batman franchise was guaranteed to go onto have the same type of success that he's had.

I agree, that'd be a better matchup. It's always hard for me to compare quirkier filmmakers with more straight-forward ones (for lack of a better term). It's like would you compare Wes Anderson and James Cameron? I mean you could sure, but at a certain point it becomes apples and oranges. The kill/save thing is pretty brutal and the only way I know how to attempt to answer it is to get very subjective and personal.

I do agree that Tarantino v Nolan is really dumb matchup. It's Apples and Oranges. Tarantino v Coen would make a bit more sense. Or Rodriguez v Kevin Smith. Or Nolan v Ridley Scott.

They both have movies I love and hate. I'll give it to Nolan, though.

*I'm sure some are surprised by that.

Too hard to call, and it's tied right now. No way am I shouldering that enormous responsibility.

Circa 2008 they where the most wretched hive of scum and villainy. These days I don't see anything like what's being described.

For me it's pretty much a numbers game.

Nolan movies I like:

  • The Dark Knight
  • The Prestige
  • Inception

Tarantino movies I like:

  • Reservoir Dogs
  • Pulp Fiction
  • Jackie Brown
  • Kill Bill vol. 1
  • Kill Bill vol. 2
  • Death Proof
  • Inglorious Basterds
  • Django Unchained
Easy choice.

What a silly idea. Why not have both? Oh wait, we do.

In response to my last post, I think a better match for Nolan would be David Fincher.

I would give Tarantino and Nolan to R'Hllor if it meant 1984-1994 James Cameron came back.

But seriously though, Tarantino and Nolan are two peas in a pod. Their respective films themselves may have different content, but they're both students of cinema and it reflects on their actual films.

You may only choose one and the other is forever erased from film history.

Nolan:

Following
Memento
Insomnia
Batman Begins
The Prestige
The Dark Knight
Inception
The Dark Knight Rises
Interstellar

Tarantino:

Reservoir Dogs
Pulp Fiction
Jackie Brown
Kill Bill vol. 1
Kill Bill vol. 2
Deathproof
Inglourious Basterds
Django Unchained
Hateful Eight (unseen)

This is very easy to me. Before django I had never heard of Tarantino and I found that movie to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen before. Out of those 9 movies you have listened I haven't even heard of 4 of those movies and both kill bills I had no interst in at all. Where with Nolan dark knight rises is my favorite movie of all time and all 3 in the dark knight trilogy are in my top like 20 movies of all time and 2 in top 10 and interstellar is in my top 20 to maybe top 10. So to me Nolan all the way!
