Memento was a far more successful film than Reservoir Dogs and Insomnia easily rivaled Pulp Fiction. So no, if it weren't for Batman, Nolan would simply have had more time to devote to films like Inception and The Prestige. He was destined to be huge regardless of what path he took.
10 years from now, Nolan's name will be worth more than all the Tarantinos, Spielbergs and Kubricks ever were, combined.
