Pfister was an exceptional cinematographer but for some reason he wanted to move on from that and decided that being a terrible director somehow had more prestige (no pun intended). To this day he is still actively choosing shooting commercial ads rather than being an Academy Award winner director of photography.

Don’t get me wrong I like and continue to appreciate his work with Nolan but he’s had quite the career arc from behind the camera filming softcore porn to Nolan and the Batman movies and nominations and awards and then to movie director jail. I think I saw somewhere he just gave up on the DP thing which is a shame because a lot of movies don’t look so good nowadays.

You do kind of have to feel for Pfister. Nolan’s moved on from Zimmer too, but that guy will never be hurting for work. Given Nolan’s way of doing things, he’s presumably moved on from Nathan Crowley as well, but Crowley just got himself an Oscar for his work on Wicked.

I feel like Nolan and Zimmer will collaborate again someday, it just so happens that Dune has been interfering and probably will again with how the scheduling for Dune Messiah and The Odyssey line up.

At the same time, even if that wasn't a factor I'd still rather Goransson score The Odyssey anyway.

Nah, I respect the hell out of him. He always stated plenty of times he wanted to direct. He finally got his chance and a big star at that time and it flopped. He went way to big budget wise for a first timer, but he took his shot. After the Oscar and plenty of praise for his work, he had no where else to go, especially when being a DP wasn’t a passion to begin with. The thing with Bald Nolan is that once you leave, you leave and there is no going back. Wally could easily direct eps of Fall Out etc, but we know that ain’t happening.
