Chronicle - faux-supers documentary

So did Neil Blomkamp but he dumped it for his next movie. Directors usually stick to that format when they're constricted by budget mainly. Sure there are some artistic merits to it but he wouldn't want to be typecast for filming only in that format.

It could kill his career if he shows he has no versatility in approach.

But to drop it completely? Seriously? I mean, did you listen to the interviews with him - it didn't seem to be due to budgetary reasons but a pure love for the found footage medium. Taking real life scenarios and going to extremes in a home movie kind of format.

If he does Fantastic Four, yeah - I don't expect Johnny to be carrying around a camera... though that might actually be bad ass lol. Or other films. With that said, I highly doubt he'll drop it just like that. Especially due to the way he talks about it.

But to say he'll drop it so much as to have the Chronicle sequel let go of the found footage approach? With the way he speaks about it? I'd be very surprised. That's like a writer saying he loves making fantasy movies then dropping fantasy all together - not gonna happen - sure the projects on the side may be genres other than fantasy, it still doesn't mean he'll stop writing fantasy films altogether; especially if it's what he likes doing.

I loved that scene where Andrew was spending time with his mom. I knew that he'd eventually find a way to warp the words she said to him... "I'm stronger than this."

Speaking on the big fight, I wish that the cops would've at least shot at the boys. I really wanted to see those forcefields come into play. I bet that at least Andrew would've been strong enough to block them, no idea about Matt though.

The Cops did shoot mainly at Matt who get a finger or two blown of. Also glad a lot of you guys are not film makers because your ideas for sequels suck. In truth they shouldn’t make anymore. The three character drove this film and the last remaining character is the weakest. They should have left Steve alive as he was the best character in the film.

I heard the period thing on IMDB too prior to that.

I doubt Trank will give up the hand-held camera technique. It seems to be his niche and what he likes doing a lot. He did it before Chronicle, I'm certain he'll do it after Chronicle. If this was the guy's only film like this? Yeah, I wouldn't expect him to continue that way. But from interviews with the guy, he really seems to like found footage a lot. So, I'm unsure why he'd drop something that he likes doing.

Dude, after this movie? And how it's doing at the box office he'll have free range to do whatever project he wants. Especially given that these films are extremely low-cost to make. Money? He'll still get his salary increasingly raised AND give the studios a low-cost film that will bring the studios in MORE money. Everyone wins.

Anyone in the industry knows there are always two types of projects. Ones that they are hired for, like Fantastic Four might be for him, which will probably not be found footage style. As well as personal projects, which this guy? Seems like he's found what he loves in found footage.

News flash - not everyone in the industry sells out. But everyone goes in because it's what they love doing and want to continue what they love doing. That's the draw of it. The draw isn't selling out. The draw is doing what you like and somehow getting paid for it. The "sell your soul" part is more getting 'assigned' to certain studio films WHILE still maintaining those projects on the side. And having actually WORKED within a major studios wall? Believe when I say they LOVE found footage because of --- $$$$$$$$ !!!

You know, there are other ways to criticize others ideas without coming across as a condescending jerk.
[BLACKOUT]They should have left Steve alive as he was the best character in the film.[/BLACKOUT]
You should put that last part in spoiler tags, dude. Because not all people on these boards have watched the film.

Also, [BLACKOUT]Steve dying helped move the plot forward and was one of the main catalysts for Andrew's downfall at the end. No Steve dying, no rampage. So, he did have to die, whether you like it or not.[/BLACKOUT]

And if by "best" you mean "most likeable", then I'll agree with you on that. If you mean "best" by "most developed", then not even close.

Such a good movie but also very depressing. I give it like a 9outta 10. Somtimes its good to talk to people though, when i had problems I talked to people about it becuase when you keep pain bottled up inside you will eventually explode. I honestly think Andrew wouldn't have gone on a rampage if it wasnt for his damn father blaming him for somthing he cleary didnt do.

The part where andrew dies is just heart breaking. Ilook back at when he talked to his mom and saying to her i'm stronger than this, now i'm guessing the world will look at him as a monster who killed police officers and murdered inocent lives. It was pretty much the superhero columbine. I guess if you were in his shoes you would also look for acceptance and if my mother or father were sick and i couldnt get the medical treatment to cure them I would probaly go off the deepend aswell. His father was just an utter disgrace, you never blame your own child for the problems you have. Its a damn shame what that boy went through. I see in Andrew what i possibly could of been if not for proper guindence. I also dont agree with him hurting people becuase he's upset. Thats when Andrew suddenly became a monster and his powers were taking control of him to an extent where he lost all train of thought hence the wild screaming. Some people go off the deep end but like I said its better to talk to sombody. ANYBODy:yay:

I completely agree with your post. I loved this movie.

This film was just so good. I can relate to all 3 of the guys here. I love the dark turn. Some great shots. Just very moving and powerful. I think the film's themes with bullying and feeling like an outcast are very on point and relevant to what's going on with teens today. Powerful stuff.

Question for those who have seen the movie.

How is the shakey cam ?
Is is as bad as Cloverfield ?

There is maybe a small ammount when the camera is being knocked about and stuff but even then, I wouldn'tt have said it was near as bad as Cloverfield (which, I myself didn't find to be a problem). For the majority of the film, it's actually pretty steady though.

I don't think this needs to be in spoilers but it makes sense that it is steady because Andrew, as the main user/carrier of the camera, uses his power to levitate and keep the camera fairly steady..

At some time in life a person ponders,or wishes they had superpowers.
If i could fly,see through walls, move objects with my mind. What would i do with such powers?
This is the main question that's answered when powers are bestowed upon 3 teens in Seattle. The 3 schoolmates :the picked on and abused Andrew (Dane DeHaan),
his cousin the book smart, conceited to cool for the room Matt (Alex Russell) and the popular Steve (Michael B. Jordan) happen upon a sinkhole in the woods that contains aliens(?)or a radioactive meteorite(?) in the woods. They venture in and emerge with superpowers.
DeHaan ,(who reminds me of a young Leonardo Dicaprio circa Whats eating Gilbert Grape),as Andrew videotapes himself,Matt and Steve, their growing powers, their pranks, the elation and joy of discovering what new powers that develop daily, and the danger of having such powers..
At times the video tape element hinders the film,it is the films blessing and curse.
But when its a blessing and when Director Josh Trank and writer Max Landis
slickly use other means to view the exploits of the teens. Its absolutely incredible to watch. It's what made another "videotape" film Cloverfield so entertaining.
I also like that the film alludes to other films like Firestarter and Akira.
It will be interesting to see what they come up with if there's a sequel.
Scale of 1-10 an 8

I liked it. I gave the movie 8/10.

Good performances and special effects.

The story isn't that original though its Carrie meets Akira.

Yeah, hero/villain. But it still in my mind isn't clear-cut villain but a lot (A LOT) of gray area like the best comic villains out there on film - Mangeto, Loki, Griffith (Jumper). Outside superhero films - Anakin, Connor Angel. Or might just be warped view that has me understanding how they all got there.
I don't consider Griffith or The Punisher a villian either

A. I'm not a man. :cwink:

B. When the "anything" includes possibly seriously hurting or killing innocent people, then there's no sympathy anymore. OK, the drunks were dirtbags...but what about all of the cops (who would not have been shooting at him if he had not decided to start destroying downtown Seattle), or Matt's girlfriend, or the guy at the gas station? They didn't abuse him. They didn't bully him. They didn't make his mom sick or his family broke. Why should they have to die because life hasn't been fair to him?
Like most killers Andrew ceased seeing other people as people they were like bugs to him collateral damage. Andrew lost his humanity and compassion becaused he stopped viewing other human beings as anything of worth.

I just deleted a bunch of posts in here and handed out a few infractions, so I think it's time for a warning:

-People are bringing way too much of their personal baggage into this thread.

-This thread is for discussing the movie, not to make fun of others - or to think you are justified in retaliating because that's what the kid in the movie did, or whatever you think your reasons are.

If someone is causing trouble here, report it. A mod will take care of it as soon as possible.

Let's keep the subject on-topic and quit letting it get so personal between everyone.

Thank you.

I really hope Dehaan gets some kind of award for this flick though. He was that good.

Sucks that
Steve got killed brothas can't catch a break :woot:
Atleast Curtis on Superpowered show Misfits is 3 Seasons deep and doing good

As much as we as nerds and geeks kind of relate to Andrew, his story is basically how a lot of supervillains got started. When you can't deal with the **** life throws at you, the dark side comes out. If you can deal with it, that's where the superheroes emerge.
Thats what makes a hero overcoming the bad stuff that gets thrown at them.

just saw this. I thought it was pretty good, mainly on the strength of its lead actors. The story of andrew was pretty gripping but the major disappointment for me was the battle. It was weak and underwhelming to me. It was good especially for 12 million, but I feel with an extra 5 or 6 million, that end battle could of been something really special. It's a good found footage film but I still enjoy Cloverfield more, guess my heart is more in the giant monster movie genre than it is the superhero genre.

I honestly wouldn't care about what people would say if I had powers. I wouldn't pull a bully's teeth out but I would prank him. And throwing up on that romona flowers chick wouldn't bother me. I could get any girl I wanted with powers. That's just me tho.

Very good film. Egbert gave it a 3.5/4 and announced that this director is destined for greater things.

Surprisingly good, I like it. It was dark and I agree with a few other comments the final battle could have needed a bit more length, but it was well executed.

I kind of wanted to see Andrew act as a Criminal more and question what he was doing, but I understand for the cost to make it this was genius.

I have to say i was really impress with the actor who played Andrew, hope he get more big projects in the near future.

Ya, I really like Andrew and especially after the hospital he looked just really po'd :) For some reason I kept thinking this guys should of played anikan(better actor, more evil emotion),but thats just me.
I almost tend to agree that the final battle should of been a little more. I also would of rather seen Andrew kill Steve than just the aftermath.
Also, about a trilogy, its quite possible other kids at the rave went before those guys or gov't was the one who filled the hole or something. Ya, Andrew was the strongest for a couple of reasons, he was so obsessed with working his powers and I think with his issues it also made him more in-tune with this abilities. Matt/Steve didn't really work on their powers so therefore, weaker than Andrew.
Overall, I really enjoyed this movie and its been awhile since I've seen a movie twice at the theatres.

It's a great movie. Gets a solid 10/10 from me.

Trank has some serious talent and the three main actors were fantastic.
