I don't care if they merge this. But it really does. It just seems like, when all is said & done, this is just an excuse to get the Marvel heroes to fight each other. So many things don't make sense. Why are they fighting? Do the pro-regs actually think that if they beat up on the anti-regs long enough, they'll "see the light" & come around to their side? Do the anti-regs think they can get the Registration Act repealed if they oppose it? (That might have worked if NOBODY signed it.) Why would Thor support it? How can Spider-Man be so stupid as to get behind it?
The worst part is that, unlike most gimmicks, it won't be so easy to just sweep this one under the rug. Jean Paul Valley is dead, & Batman never talks about him anymore. Same with Ben Reilly. And "Joseph". You never hear any mention anymore of Superman's electric period, Daredevil's grey suit, Noble Kale, Wolverine not having a nose or Spider-Man Chapter One. They had no real long-term ramifications. They were easily undone. This one has an impact that'll be much harder to shake, and I fear for both future generations of readers AND writers.
And it's not just Spider-man's unmasking, either. While that was bad, there are other matters to consider. Not only does it mean he can't go back to balancing heroics with a normal life-once he no longer lives in Avengers Tower or works for Stark he's pretty much screwed, but this is the end of the Avengers as we know it. I can't see Thor, Cap & Iron Man working together again after this. I hear the FF is supposed to lose one of their number. Everyone is going to be affected. There'll be no more secret identites, which has been a staple of superhero comics since day one.
I just don't think they thought this one through.

well it might be a gimmick but it won't be reversed an interview with the creator show that what happens in civil war won't be changed by a big scarlet witch Mind wipe

It is a gimmick. All "Big Events" are gimmicks.

If it's from Marvel, it usually IS...and by "usual" I mean "Always".

Took the words right out of my mouth.

At least its superior to the HOM "gimmick". Then again, I think I enjoyed ONSLAUGHT more than HOM at this point.

That's my point.

That's not fair; DC is just as bad w/the gimmicks.

I'm gonna say this for the record. I jumped on the Infinite Crisis Countdown/Crisis bandwagon for the long hall, MAJOR $ investment, and after reading every issue I don't feel like I waisted a single penny.

There's doing it right and there's doing it Marvel.

I'm not talking about just those; what about Death of Superman, Green Lantern going nuts, Azrael-Batman, ALL-STAR, gimmicks like that?

IC was a gimmick too, I was really disappointed by it towards the end when I found out it was Superboy Prime punching a wall all this time. It was as bad as Wanda being behind A: D.

Either way, all big events are gimmick, they have some effects for a couple of months and then everything returns back to normal.

wait a second, how can you say that about DC? they use events to retcon characters same as marvel does. im enjoying OYL and 52, but dont feel i missed much in IC itself. superboy primes punches were gimmicky. c-listers dying was gimmicky.

marvel's status quo has really changed with this registration act. it changes the way marvel heroes are going to be viewed. i think if your a marvel fan its an important series. way more than a gimmick.

but if all events are gimmicks then cmawwwwn, 52 (which i DO love) and OYL is the biggest in history. shouldnt and hasnt stopped the quality.

Until now. How do you put THIS genie back in the bottle?

Civil War is way better (written and drawn) than IC, IMO. It's all about what you like the best.

Well one would hope they would have long lasting effects but by this time next year, I expect it all to be back to normal, if no, then good for Marvel.

3 out of 4 of those get a pass by default due to the fact that they took place IN THE 90s! The DECADE of gimmickry! The 90s were the "bruckheimer's armageddon" of comics.

That is SUCH a minor part of IC it isn't even funny. All it really did was shift like 2 things in continuity. Wanda shifted ALL of continuity, and she had all of a month to go nuts. SBP had YEARS.

I've said all along that CW and The Illuminati, et all have felt like gimmicks. They all needed much more build up to mean anything in my book.

Doc, let me break it down to you on a basic level. All......big.....events......are......gimmicks. Even......Infinite.......Crisis......it.....doesnt......matter......how.....good....or.....bad.....it .....is.....its....a.....gimmick......

These Gimmicks are really creative ways to bring in new readers. I had stopped reading comics altogther until the death of supes and bane breaking bruce's back. Just by putting "The Death Of Superman" TBP on my coffe table, i've attracted new readers. I know plenty of people who lost interest in comics until the ultimate line (which is like ALL-STAR)came out. The idea around civil war (w/o the cosmic beings, wall crawlers etc) is not too far from a Tom Clancy novel or Tom Cruise movie, which are viewed by millions. It's a great jumping on point for new readers and i think the world could use more comic fans.

I never disputed that. I said FELT like a gimmick. IC never made me say, "wow this is really gimmicky."

Bad Darthphere, patronising like that...I smack your nose with a rolled up Mad Magazine!

Well of course your hate for Marvel doesnt influence that perception at all.

But you can't have the general public forget who Spidey is, or have the heroes forget how their friends turned on them.

Well yeah, if its written well. Even if Tony and Cap make up, theyll have to deal with that for a while.

I don't HATE Marvel. I disagree with some of the things they're doing these days. The ideas for HoM and CW are sound, but the execution sucks bad.

I get the impression that Joe Q was in a meeting or something one day and said "**** it, I'm going to leave my mark on this company and this industry" and decided to shake everything up.
