I don't care if they merge this. But it really does. It just seems like, when all is said & done, this is just an excuse to get the Marvel heroes to fight each other. So many things don't make sense. Why are they fighting? Do the pro-regs actually think that if they beat up on the anti-regs long enough, they'll "see the light" & come around to their side? Do the anti-regs think they can get the Registration Act repealed if they oppose it? (That might have worked if NOBODY signed it.) Why would Thor support it? How can Spider-Man be so stupid as to get behind it?
The worst part is that, unlike most gimmicks, it won't be so easy to just sweep this one under the rug. Jean Paul Valley is dead, & Batman never talks about him anymore. Same with Ben Reilly. And "Joseph". You never hear any mention anymore of Superman's electric period, Daredevil's grey suit, Noble Kale, Wolverine not having a nose or Spider-Man Chapter One. They had no real long-term ramifications. They were easily undone. This one has an impact that'll be much harder to shake, and I fear for both future generations of readers AND writers.
And it's not just Spider-man's unmasking, either. While that was bad, there are other matters to consider. Not only does it mean he can't go back to balancing heroics with a normal life-once he no longer lives in Avengers Tower or works for Stark he's pretty much screwed, but this is the end of the Avengers as we know it. I can't see Thor, Cap & Iron Man working together again after this. I hear the FF is supposed to lose one of their number. Everyone is going to be affected. There'll be no more secret identites, which has been a staple of superhero comics since day one.
I just don't think they thought this one through.
