Clint Eastwood Directing J. Edgar Hoover Biopic

Billy Crudup's accent in Public Enemies..what do call that? It was the 'broadcast news reporter' accent from the 30s. It always sounds like he's pitching an idea to you.

That's how everyone talked in the 30s.

with all due respect HR. there are tons of serious movies every year that are in no way oscar movies and will because of that not be nominated.

Leo just likes oscar type movies. nothing wrong with that.but it is what it is.

Shutter Island and Inception aren't Oscar movies, think about it, who wouldn't take a role like Hoover? he's a legendary historical figure.

I had a feeling DiCaprio would get this role, him and Eastwood working together should be great.

In fairness I think Leo just looks for strong dramatic roles, he seems uninterested in comedies or action films.

And that's where usually the best actor award is :cwink:
I think it was in the Inception or Shutter Island where i had a discussion about the very same subject.
And you replied to dark_b's post about Shutter Island not being a Oscar movie .....you are right that it isn't a oscar bait movie like Prescious or Invictus. But it was initially going to be released during the Oscar season. THe studio decided to push back the release because they didn't want to spend million promoting the movie ( i think there were the numbers were between a low 15 million and a "very high" 65 million) even though the movie was finished in time for the oscars. Even film reviewers have said tha if Shutter Island wouldn't have been pushed back , it would've certainly gotten oscar nominations including the best actor nod.

Leo chooses his projects in such a way that his chances of getting a best oscar nod increase. Big budget movies that are going for the oscars can afford to have studio support behind them. Indie flicks are so-so unless there is some serious talent involved. Leo often chooses the former movies lately.
Gangs Of new York
The Aviator (biopic , playing a historical figure)
Blood Diamond ( did his best to master a south african accent)
Revolutionary Road ( Sam Mendes ...the movie itself speaks volumes)

He is going for the Best Actor nod. The good thing about this is that Leo is giving solid acting performances in his movies. I just wished that this wouldn't become a driving force for him. I think he's proven himself to be superior then other Best Oscar winners who for some reason win once and then go back to making mediocre movies ( Adrien Brody & Forest Whitaker for example).

I thought Christian Bale was going to nab this role but it seems like he's not getting the role offers like he used too....

I'm curious how this is going to portray speculated aspects of Hoover's life, like the nature of his relationship with Clyde Tolson.

People like DiCaprio, Damon, Pitt, etc-have always gotten first crack at the big scripts over Bale. For example: Damon and Pitt were both attached to Bale's role in The Fighter before it went to him.

Leo DiCaprio to play Hoover:

http://www.collider.com/2010/06/17/leonardo-dicaprio-clint-eastwood-j-edgar-hoover-biopic/

You may remember that back in late March, we reported that Leonardo DiCaprio was in early negotiations to star in Clint Eastwood’s biopic about the controversial former heard of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover. It looks like those negotiations have wrapped up as Deadline reports that DiCaprio is now officially on board. The film has been on the fast track ever since producer Brian Grazer brought Dustin Lance Black’s script to Clint Eastwood in mid-February. And only Deadline could say that it’s great DiCaprio “is getting out of his Marty Scorsese rut,” as if working with the legendary director is such an awful fate that’s really brought down the actor’s career.

Hit the jump for other projects that DiCaprio’s been circling and to learn more about Hoover.

DiCaprio has been mentioned in connection to the following films:

* Starring in Travis McGee with Oliver Stone directing
* A viking movie directed by Mel Gibson
* Voicing the lead character in DreamWorks’ The Guardian
* Reuniting with Ridley Scott for Gucci
* An adaptation of Brave New World, which would also be with Scott
* An adaptation of Beat the Reaper with Rounders duo Brian Koppelman and David Levien

No word on how many of these projects are still active or if DiCaprio’s still attached, but they should give you an indication that the dude has a wide variety of flicks to choose from.

I want to see that Gibson viking film with Leo. So bad.

With the big screen adaptation of the life of J. Edgar Hoover, the founder of the FBI, already having Clint Eastwood behind the camera and Leonardo DiCaprio in front of it, Hoover was already quite the high profile project. Well there's a chance it could get even more attention as Vulture has revealed Joaquin Phoenix, fresh off his crazy, documented, public facade in I'm Still Here, is the top choice to play Hoover's protégé suspected lover Clyde Tolson. Frequently referred to in contemporary settings as an ambiguously gay crime-fighting duo, the two were in close contact at both the FBI and in their social lives.

Aside from his work at the FBI from 1947-1972, Tolson also spent many nights dining out with Hoover at night clubs and even spent vacations together. None of this is official yet, and apparently, contrary to what we'd heard previously, DiCaprio hasn't even closed his deal to play Hoover yet (though it is expected to be finalized soon). Once DiCaprio has crossed the T's and dotted the I's, an offer is expected to be sent to Phoenix. The real question is whether or not he'll end up taking the role. But if he's looking for a big return to acting after a potentially career-harming performance in a faux documentary, this high profile biopic from writer Dustin Lance Black (Milk) is just what the doctor ordered.

Though it sounds daring to have his return to the spotlight be in the form of a real-life, closeted homosexual opposite DiCaprio, the role is certainly a challenge as this is a most unconventional romance from history. Imagine having to see your secret lover at work everyday when just the very act of your relationship, even in the open, would cast millions of judgmental eyes on you and the FBI. Though Hoover did his best to keep his love for Tolson secret (going so far as to hunt down and threaten men who questioned his heterosexuality), the FBI director left Tolson everything (his estate, the life insurance policy and even the American flag from atop Hoover's casket) upon his death. I'd love for Phoenix to make this his grand return to the big screen.

Joaquin Phoenix should take the role if offered. C'mon, it has Clint Eastwood as the director and Leo DiCaprio as the lead. It should be a no-brainer for him to take.

Some actors aren't willing to play homosexuals. I'm not sure that Phoenix would do it.

Interesting choice for Eastwood, I would have thought he would be creeped out by gay people because of his age. This makes me respect him more.

I didn't expect something like this from Clint Eastwood but it shows he is a serious filmmaker . It would be a wise move for Phoenix to choose this.

DiCaprio as Hoover? Really? I'm not a fan of him, but I'll admit that he is a good actor, but he's also... y'know, an attractive man, unlike J. Edgar "Hey, I look like the spawn of a frog and Bob Hope" Hoover.

Come on, man.

Has anyone here already read the script review that was posted on the Playlist a while back? I kinda stumbled upon it, and because of it this movie has instantly shot up even further in my list of anticipated films. It should be totally amazing really.

I do hope they'll have DiCaprio in make-up for scenes with old Hoover, I always dislike different actors playing the same character in one movie. It just feels wrong to me, and causes an almost instant drop in believeability.

Now knowing that Joaquin was faking it and that he's done with that movie. I hope the rumors are true and he is casted as Hoover's lover. He's a fantastic actor under the right circumstances.

Hoover to Shoot Early 2011

Speaking today at a special retrospective screening alongside Martin Scorsese (via satellite), Leonardo DiCaprio confirmed plans to move forward with Clint Eastwood's Hoover early next year.

"It looks like, yes, infidelity is in place," joked DiCaprio of joining a non-Scorsese film, "I will be working with Clint very soon on the Hoover project. I think it's going to start very soon. Maybe January or February."

The actor was confirmed to be involved with the project earlier this year and will star as the biopic's focus, J. Edgar Hoover, who founded the Federal Bureau of Investigations in the 1930's and whose ensuing career spanned decades.

It should be noted that DiCaprio did not refer to the film by the Hoover title, potentially indicating that the Eastwood project may be released with a different name.

Scorsese, meanwhile, updated the progress of his next film, Hugo Cabret, currently shooting in England with the production marking a first attempt at 3D filmmaking for the Oscar winning director.

"It's going. It's been an experience..." said the director, "Every time you set up the camera, there's the geometry and everything. You're really redefining and trying to figure out how to tell the story again with pictures and this 3D, which is really interesting. And of course it's a film that's a fable... We've been shooting for quite awhile. We only have a few more weeks, I hope. I hope to get it out by next year."

Scorsese also mentioned in passing that he still intends to film a biopic of Frank Sinatra, though it is uncertain whether it will be his next project.http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=71665#ixzz15KKjZJGk
