Colin Farrell IS The Penguin

Had no idea about this smoking thing. Just assumed it was less fashionable these days.

Same here. But I guess it's something like: "We don't wan't children or teens see adults smoke on screen today, giving them unhealty ideas". Which is fine, since cigarettes is an old super corporate deadly thing which simply shortens peoples lives.

I'm glad people are smoking less nowadays and with modern regulations, for the least just remembering the old days in the 80s/90s when you had to wash all your clothes after a night out at a pub or a night club, despite being a non smoker. Just because of all that frakking stinking cigarette-smoke that got into all your clothes back then. But that was normal back then, and one of a gazillions stories about smoking that would freak out yonger people today.

But I still kinda miss people smoking in noir-like movies, just for the nostalgic atmosphere. Also some classic female movie stars looked so gorgeous, fabolous and elegant smoking back then. Yeah, of course that's a severe morally contradiction lol.

And to be honest the stink is the least of it. There are plenty of innocent non-smokers who died because of secondhand smoke. Lung cancer is a nasty disease. I lost both grandfathers rather young to it due to their lifelong smoking habits. And my one grandmother, who never smoked or drank, died of a type of kidney cancer tied to smoking.

But yeah, it looks beautiful on camera and clouds of cigarette smoke can add a ton of atmosphere to films, especially in noir, spy, and other thrillers. Which is another part of the problem, if something looks pretty and cool on film, impressionable young minds will want to try it.

This was something I noticed watching the original Ghostbusters, all the Ghostbusters smoked like chimneys. It's actually a little disarming how casual they are about it. The sequel, though, cut down on the smoking quite a bit.

Yes, which I clearly pointed out: The least of it. Which was my whole point. I also tried to make it clear it was an era of the past. I've lived long enough myself to be aware of all the victims regarding some relatives of smokers getting lung cancer.

In recent decades we've also learned about another consequence of smoking, but at least atm seemingly almost as frightening: KOL (or COL in English?). It's different from lung cancer, but very severe and I've had my fair share of to me close people dying from that recently. I'm trying to find an international term as writing and googling. It would be something like Chronical Obstructive Lung Disease, but that's just my guess.

Btw, Alien is always considering a timeless sci-fi classic, which mostly always hold up (to which I agree). Well, apart for some hair cuts and 1979 computor screen tech. However, I don't remember now which year it was supposed to be, but today I'm pretty sure the people in that future wouldn't be sitting around the dinner table all smoking like that when some comrades hardly had'nt even finished their meal. But I digress in off topic here, sorry.

Very true. I can still remember that hardcore smell after a night out that wouldn’t leave your clothes for days. When talk of smoking bans in certain public places first came up they felt crazy (even to a non-smoker like me). It was a much bigger part of common culture back then. Smoke on film can be a great visual but yeah, health obviously comes first.

I remember when pub/restaurant owners were very worried that lots of people would cheat instead of bringing their lazy asses outside to smoke due to this new EU rule, and some random "control patrol" could notice that, and maybe resulting in fines or even worse consequences . But all of a sudden the smokers followed pretty much the rules.

And friends that smoked told me that this ultimately was pretty good, because they planned their smoking since they had to go like outside, hence less cigaretts smoked that night. They planned it instead of random constantly smoking. Whatever that information is worth today lol. And I've digressed off topic once again, sorry.

Being fair, Alien is one of those movies were I can kind of buy the "everyone smokes" as an implied setting point. Specifically, these are blue collar employees working for a company that is at least on the lesser rungs of the "Evil Megacorps" ladder, minimum. That sounds like the kind of formula for "Lots of recreational drug use, as long as its something which doesn't interfere with the work". Or, there's a lot of smoking because its a cheap-ish way to handle the stress of working a relatively crappy job, and Weyland-Yutani might even actively encourage and facilitate it. The only unrealistic element is that its cigarettes as opposed to some future-drug, but hey, maybe they are engineered future-cigarettes, with all the mind-altering but only half the cancer. Or so says the W-Y division that invented them, anyway ( and the Alien-verse is absolutely the kind of setting where I'd believe that the left hand of the Giant Corporation is actually screwing over the right hand, only nobody has noticed it yet ).

The fact that we are fine with violence, sex, all these things in cinema but cigarettes we draw the line at always made me laugh.

Farrell was great for me. Already got used to how unrecognisable he is from trailers but he really feels like Penguin.

Colin Farrell is so much better as a character actor than a leading man. This is really where he excels. Like undeniably, he has the look of a leading man, but the attempts at putting him in lead roles always kind of fell with a thud. Even in Daredevil, I thought Farrell was the most entertaining part of that picture.

Let's not forget, a long time ago, Colin Farrell nearly played Batman onscreen.

Except Phone Booth...Phone Booth was good...

...which was directed by the late Joel Schumacher

...who directed Batman Forever...

Yeah agreed with that. He’s got that X-factor that often works really well in a side character. I’m not sure how much of his work I’ve not seen but I also really enjoyed In Bruges. Had no idea Joel Schumacher directed Phone Booth.

I'd agree. He obviously has the look, presence and charm of a leading man, but in terms of his acting skillset and delivery, it always feels like he's better suited to the more niche and specialist roles rather than the kind of stuff that would get thrown at (for example) Tom Cruise.

I do enjoy watching interviews with him, he's very intelligent and philosophical and able to express himself very eloquently. He's moved on hugely from the party animal tag that he was labelled with (fairly enough I would add) back when he started out in Hollywood and seems to have reached a calm and rewarding place in his life in the last few years.

Here in Ireland he's been on plenty of national chat shows at various times, and comes across as a very genuine person. This one in particular always hits me in the feels, he gets a bit emotional

Minor spoilers:

The humor in this was few and far between but Oswald being completely perturbed by Gordon showing him a picture of the dead commissioner and going "Aw come on, why ya showin' me this?!" had me in stitches. Farrell made the right call by basically making him a Jersey mobster, which works much better than him being British like in the Arkham games.

I'm one of those folks who are continuously unimpressed with Colin Farrell. I think he's a good actor and he's a likeable guy but like Bradley Cooper, I feel like people overrate him way more than his actual worth. That said, I loved him as Oswald. Excellent job. Want more of him.

Farrell was great, and I'm glad they avoided making him
The rat, it seems like something they could have done as an easy way to have him move up to the top, but I much prefer him actually being loyal.

Having seen the film I now find it even funnier that the studio absolutely would not allow the Penguin to smoke a cigar but
the Riddler bludgeoning a man to death with a carpentry tool and cutting off his thumb is absolutely fine.
