Back in May when I took my first course on film lighting at the Art Institute of Dallas I was placed into a group for the entire quarter (11 weeks of classes).
For our Final Project, we were given a list of films ranging through the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
The final called for groups to choose a single film and recreate two minutes worth of the film on there own, adapting and replicating the costumes and props as best they could. But the priority most of all was nailing down the lighting and cinematography. And above all capturing the essence of your film of choice.
There were a few films on the list that the professor and her teaching assistant admitted that no students ever dared attempt to recreate. Such as the original Matrix and the three Star Wars installments that make up the classic OT.
But one of the films on the list was Tim Burton's 1989 original "BATMAN" and being the fan that I am I persuaded our team to attempt it.
Originally we decided not to because the two minutes had to be of a continuous scene and there simply wasn't two straight minutes of "BATMAN" that we could successfully replicate in full (given the production design, etc.) We were originally going to go with the original "Men In Black" which was also on the list.
But we worked around it, brought the concept of doing two 1 minute scenes to the professors and they agreed. And my persuasion paid off.
The "BATMAN" Lighting project as it has come to be called at school sent waves of enthusiasm through the Art Institute's Video Department and as far as school goes, I'm pretty much a household name for everyone there.
Starring myself as Bruce Wayne/Batman (I try to Out-Keaton Keaton and it doesn't work for me, but I like me when I'm in the suit lol)
And the lovely Emily Mitchell as Vicki Vale (she helped us out big time)
Enjoy
