Universal and Imagine Entertainment will remake the 1970 sci-fi saga Colossus: The Forbin Project as a potential directing vehicle for Ron Howard, reports Variety. Brian Grazer will produce.

Jason Rothenberg has been set to write the screenplay for a movie to be called Colossus.

Based on a book by D.F. Jones, the original film was a forerunner of movies like Terminator, introducing the idea of a government-built computer that becomes sentient and then takes control.

Rothenberg will use the original's premise as a springboard and will incorporate two subsequent "Colossus" novels written by Jones to hatch a much broader film premise.

After a brainiac designs a supercomputer for the government as a means of protection, the computer decides itself that the most effective way it can act as protector is to assume complete control.

Rothenberg wrote the original draft of The Sparrow, which has Brad Pitt attached at Warner Bros., and he adapted the graphic novel Proximity Effect at Universal.

Dave Collins, who was integral in tying up the rights to the series, will be executive producer.

Could be interesting, I suppose, but... I don't know. I'm so tired of the word "remake". Makes you wonder if everything in ten years or so from now will be a remake

I've always liked the original movie....and the books were good....so a combination of them should be interesting too.

Very interesting. I'd like to see this.

The deal comes at a time when Rothenberg is adapting for Universal and Imagine Entertainment The Forbin Project, a new version of the 1970 Joseph Sargent-directed scifi tale Colossus: The Forbin Project. Ron Howard is attached to direct and Will Smith is attached to a contemporary Frankenstein story about the world's first sentient computer and the misunderstood genius who gains power over the world because of it.

Over three years ago it was announced that Brian Grazer would be producing a remake of the ’70s film Colossus: The Forbin Project, which was in itself based on Dennis Feltham Jones’ novel Colossus from the ’60s. Grazer was setting up the project as a directing vehicle for Ron Howard, with Jason Rothenberg—who just yesterday was hired on to pen a draft of the new Twilight Zone movie—taking on writing duties for the film. Until today, that announcement was the last we heard of the project.

Finally, some progress: Will Smith is attached to star in the remake, which is about a massive American defense computer, named Colossus, becoming sentient and deciding to assume control of the world. Learn more after the break.

Yeah, no thanks. I'll keep watching the original.

So this is what? Rumored project #10,000 for Will Smith?

huh...I may have to retract my film-geek status...i've never even HEARD of the original. :/

Classic movie....Eric Braeden was the computer's creator Forbin....

Not a big fan of Ron Howard but I like Will Smith, this could be decent.
