I'm kind of interested in reading the comics that served as inspiration for each Marvel Cinematic Universe film, lone comics of course. Thought this would be an interesting idea for a thread, the only one i can think of right now is Iron Man: Extremis which inspired Iron Man 3.

I like this, I've actually been going back and reading a lot of the comics that Iron Man and the Avengers used (not as big of a buff on Cap or Thor).

Iron Man 1:
-Tales of Suspense #39: First appearance of Iron Man, tells the story of him being captured and meeting Yin Sin.
-Extremis: Updated Tony's origin and was what they primarily used in IM
-Iron Man #163-174: Covers the first appearance and arc with Obadiah Stane. Tells the same story of working with Howard and becoming a big figure at Stark Industries and attempting to take it over. The story in the film is obviously not as extensive though. This also includes Rhodey becoming the new Iron Man for a while.
-Iron Man #182-200: Covers more of Tony vs. Stane and tells the lead up of Stane becoming Iron Mongerer. Again, way more extensive than the movie.

Iron Man 2:
-Iron Man #120-128: This is the Demon in a Bottle storyline. Tony goes through a rough drinking binge. The scene of Tony partying drunk is based off of this. This story also features the first appearance of Justin Hammer and heavily involves him.
-Iron Man #167-200: Rhodey becomes the new Iron Man after Tony's life is ruined by Obadiah Stane and relapses into drinking. Like Demon in a Bottle, only the bare roots of the story was used, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
-Iron Man #282-291: Involves Rhodey becoming War Machine. Again, only the bare roots but is worth mentioning.
-Tales of Suspense #97: First appearance of Whiplash. Just looked that up...isn't really consequential.
-Tales of Suspense #52: First appearance of Black Widow. Like how Marvel Studios introduced Widow in an Iron Man film, just like the comics.

Will post the Avengers comics later on when I'm more free.

The Avengers:
-Avengers #1: Loki causes the Avengers to assemble for the first time
-The Ultimates #1-13: Chitauri attack the Earth as the Ultimates (Ultimate Avengers) come together for the first time
-Captain Marvel #25-33, Avengers #125: Thanos attacks the Earth to gain possession of Cosmic Cube

Iron Man 3:
-Extremis: Self explanatory
-Tales of Suspense #50: First appearance of the Mandarin
-Iron Man #281-289: Rhodes becomes Iron Man again after Tony is presumed dead. Have a feeling the story will take turn like this with Iron Patriot and Tony being presumed dead after the Mandarin's attack
-Iron Man #230: First appearance of Jack Tagger/Firepower. Don't think much is going to be used of this other than the fact Jack Taggert is a guy using a suit designed by the government (he steals Rhodes' Iron Patriot armor).
-Marvel Comics Presents #26: First appearance of Coldblood. Again, don't think much is going to be similar other than Eric Salvin being a part of the US Army before some horrific incident (in this case Mandarin's attack on AF1) that results in him turning into an enhanced human (Extremis instead of being a cyborg in IM3).
-Iron Man #299-300: The Iron Legion. In this, Rhodey brought it together to take on Ultimo while Tony was in a coma. IM3's rendition will obviously be different.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier:
-Captain America v5 #1-14: First appearance of Winter Soldier and covers Cap vs. Winter Soldier. Also involves Crossbones being hired by Red Skull.
-Tales of Suspense #75: First appearance of Sharon Carter and Batroc the Leaper. The storyline in the comic of Batroc using Sharon as bait to lure Cap may be used, as well as Sharon being known as Agent 13.
-Nick Fury vs. SHIELD #3: First appearance of Alexander Pierce and involved Fury being run out by SHIELD. Have a feeling the movie will take some bare bones from this story.

What I really liked about the Phase 1 of the MCU is that with the possible exception of TIH, all the films had enough of a influence from silver and bronze age Marvel comics which will always be the Marvel Universe I am used to and grew up reading. I am slightly worried that with Phase 2 and on they'll be getting further and further away from those age's influence and start relying mostly on 21st century Marvel comics(which I've never been a reader of and have little to no nostalgic/emotional investment in). We'll see but I sure hope they never lose touch with their roots. I still think all the best stories came from the silver and bronze ages.

I have faith in Marvel Studios, that even when they adapt more modern stories, or create new ones from whole cloth, that they will maintain the fundamental underlying spirit already established in the MCU.

I am confidently hopeful as well, but if I had a chief worry...what I said before would be it.

Surprised more people aren't interested in this.

Guardians of the Galaxy:
-Iron Man #55: First appearance of Thanos and Drax. This could also be the basis for one of the Guardians sending a beacon to Tony if that is indeed what happens in the after credits of IM3.
-Iron Man #12: First appearance of The Controller
-Captain Marvel #28: Covers Thanos releasing The Controller from prison and contracting his services...for the record, this issue takes place during the event that led up to the first Thanos vs. Avengers conflict involving the Cosmic Cube.
-Marvel Preview #4, 7: First appearances of Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon.
-Strange Tales #178-181, Warlock #9-11, 15: First appearance of Gamora, the Universal Church of Truth, and Magus. Leads up to Thanos' second major battle with the Avengers.
-The Thanos Quest #1-2: Covers Thanos' journey to obtain the Infinity Gems. Bare bones obviously.
-Annihilation Conquest #1-6, Star-Lord #1-4: Covers the event that led up to the Guardians first forming...doubtful much is taken from this in the film though.
-Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #1-25: Obligatory...although, again, doubtful that much of this will be used in the film, aside from things like "Ship"...and maybe Cosmo
-The Thanos Imperative #1-6: Covers the Guardians' "final" confrontation with Thanos

Avengers 2:
-Avengers #125: Thanos' first battle with the Avengers. Captain Marvel calls on the Avengers to help defeat Thanos, who has gain possession of the cosmic cube.
-Avengers Annual #7, Marvel Two-In-One Annual #2: Covers the Avengers' second battle with Thanos, who has this time formed a doomsday weapon with the Infinity Gems. This is the aftermath of the Warlock story where Gamora was introduced. Also covers Thanos' backstory more in-depth.
-The Infinity Gauntlet #1-6: Covers Thanos forming the Infinity Gauntlet, which has the power to grant him anything he wishes, which he uses to kill half the universe. This results in him fighting the Avengers and the rest of the Marvel universe.

How do you know this?

How do you know this?
Considering neither are out I figured it went without saying they were speculation.

However, all of what I put there are pretty much givens. I just listed the first appearances of the major characters and the major storylines with Thanos and the DnA run that introduced and dealt with the Guardians. They're literally the only things they can pull from if they're going to use anything at all from the comics that's directly related to Thanos/Gamora/Drax, and the Guardians in general.

As for the Controller, I'm just assuming LR is right about it and just listed his first appearance and his involvement with Thanos.

As for Avengers 2, again, it's pretty much givens...assuming Thanos is the villain, which he most likely is. Those three stories are the definitive Avengers vs. Thanos stories and all take place after Thanos does some **** off in the galaxy that gives him godly power. Speaking of which, I'd like to see them do a little nod to the comics, where Captain Marvel and Warlock both called on the Avengers after failing to defeat Thanos themselves, by having Star-Lord/the Guardians call on the Avengers after failing to stop Thanos.

The cave scene with Hulk and Betty in the rain was taken from Hulk: Gray.

The gathering of armors scene from Iron Man 3 was from a New Avengers issue:

Thor: Dark World seems to be based on THor 344-349

There were many similarities between iron man 3 and this comic:

Not the villain though, but just like in the movie Tony Stark's selfishness makes the people he loves more get hurt, in this case it's because he decides not to be Iron Man anymore. Happy Hogan is badly injured and ends up in the hospital while Peper is kidnaped by the main villain.

Considering Age of Ultron is coming, which comics would be best to read and may have been used as inspiration? Any story that hasn't been already adapted in a Earth's Mightiest Heroes episode?

Seems like Age of Ultron pretty much adapted Avengers 54-55. Thor Ragnarok seems to be mixing the first major Walt Simonson run with a bit of Planet Hulk. Any guess at which stories Doctor Strange will take besides the origin story?

I think Spider-Man Homecoming borrowing some things from Ultimate Spider-Man.

Excellent thread idea. I will be bookmarking this for later.
