Oh yea I get it. Thats one of the reason i thought Funny Games was such a brilliant movie. And yea after finishing the whole article it was very thoughtful and I find myself agreeing with almost every part of it really lol I just don't like thinking of Abed having a disability not a REAL disability, he's totally intelligent enough to direct movies, deal with little arrogant asian child actors, and attend college despite his mental "disabilities."

Aspergers is a high functioning autism. I think he has it coz of little stuff that happens, like when he called over Jeff's old lawyer buddy; But it was really played up in the Pilot. Remember when they were all miming behind Jeff's back at the very end and he freaked out? "What's going on? Am I deaf?! Can you hear me?!!" lol. He doesn't easily pick up on social cues, that's pretty much all his disability is.

i'm so confused...i've never seen this show. isn't it just about college?

It's just about college in the way that Arrested Development was just about a model home and My Name is Earl was just about a hotel room.

I know you weren't comparing them HighFivingMF but I don't think Community has quite reached the heights Arrested Development did yet. Not to say they won't, but I think Community suffers from being a bit disjointed right now. The first season managed to throw in the occasional full episode parody, but this season has seen a few too many aim for that mark, and the more college-style, casual episodes that had more character have taken a backseat. Fortunately the Christmas episode seems like an indication that that will stop.

In the commentaries they mention that Abed does have a disorder.

Asperger's seems to fit with his interactions with others, but I honestly never think of him that way. That casts far too cold and clinical a pall over the show. He's just the often hilariously weird kid to me. :)

Yea, I have ****** social skills and ADD and stuff like that but I can't go around getting a check from the government every month, believe me I've been denied 3 times! Lol But for real I don't find people that are just off like Abed to be "disabled." In my eyes if you are disabled you should't be working or anything you should be on disability or if you're crazy enough, in a mental ward. Abed is just weird, like literally EVERY person on the planet, because we all have little things about us that make us weird to somebody, Abed's oddness is just a little more apparent then most people

...Abed's problem isn't weirdness, his problem is not being able to connect with people. His oddness is more apparent because he has Aspergers. Educate yo'selfs!

Here's a comment from that article that pretty much sums it up.

Because he has Asperger syndrome.

You don't know what you're talking about. Abed isn't portrayed as being simply 'socially awkward'. He doesn't pick up on social cues; common sense things like that people should take offense to having their flaws crassly exposed are strange revelations to him. He has a narrow band of interests which he pursues obsessively. He has trouble grasping nonliteral usage of language, and his own speech is verbose, and generally lacks the intonation and flow people use to superimpose further meaning over their words. In brief, he couldn't be more obviously characterized as having Asperger syndrome.

There's a growing sentiment among people, mostly people who don't know what they're talking about, that people diagnosed with an ASD are "just socially awkward". Some of them are. A lot of them aren't. Thing is, this sentiment coincides with an intolerable trend whereby social awkwardness is construed as a desirable trait; it's quirky, and funny, and hip. For people with an actual ASD, it's not really any of those things. It's awful. It prevents people from developing human connections in the same way other people do. It's not an affectation used to get laid, the way so many people have come to think thanks to indie movies.

In my opinion, Abed is one of the most sympathetic and insightful portrayals in popular media of someone with a genuine ASD. But he's also a very sad character. These aren't competing realities; they're complementary ones. Granted, in some instances Abed has broken this mold. He was shown to be popular with women, and fairly adroit at fielding them. He doesn't have trouble approaching people, or being in many social situations. This isn't absolutely inconsistent with Asperger's, since obliviousness can be emboldening, and it can be seen as a best case scenario for someone with the disorder. The ways in which Abed is different are a source of humor, and they aren't often dwelt on, but they very much define his character, and they are consistently handled with a good deal of unpatronizing understanding.

I don't mean to sound like altogether too much of a dick, but if you're speaking from experience, you may well know how it feels to go to a party and feel uncomfortable and not have anyone to talk to. You likely don't know how it feels to absolutely and without exaggeration never even go to a party, because the idea explodes in your head and that's that. You probably don't know what it's like to have just a single friend, or no friends at all, and to not even be able do things with them. Michael Cera in Arrested Development, or Michael Cera in Superbad, or Michael Cera in Juno, these are characters which are "just socially awkward". Abed isn't "just socially awkward". Abed has Asperger syndrome. It's not wacky. Trust me.

Why do we have to go to the trouble of breaking down the character trying to decide what disorder he has at all instead of just watching the show and enjoying ourselves?

... I guess coz it's on hiatus?

But really it's no trouble, I just think it's silly to say Abed's nothing but a wacky guy when he's such an honest portrayal of someone with Aspergers. But 'ey, if you really wanna believe Abed is simply an odd misfit you're missing out on a lot of the show's heart.

I don't know if that's necessarily true, although I agree that his character is supposed to have Asperger's syndrome he doesn't seem particularly realistic. Everyone I've ever met with Asperger's including my own nephew are pretty deeply unhappy in some way and Abed just isn't. I realise this show is a comedy so they can't really dwell on the more negative aspects of his condition, but in reality he would most likely be extremely lonely, depressed or angry, if not some mixture of the three.

Yeah, I can imagine. I think he's pretty realistic though because of "Contemporary American Poultry", that ep really stuck out to me coz it was the first time he wasn't outwardly relying on the crutch of references and we got to see how he really felt.

Im pretty sure this and 30 Rock both come back next Thursday. All I know is they are set on my dvr but its still so far off that there isnt a description of the ep

Community to feature a Dungeons & Dragons episode.

The offbeat and quirky second-year NBC comedy Community that’s generated a growing cult following for its zany, genre-expanding style, has plans for a forthcoming episode to surround the legendary role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons – with its cast playing it for the entire half-hour.

“They’ll just be sitting at a table playing,” creator/showrunner Dan Harmon said of the series that last season centered one memorable episode around paintball, during a TCA session in Pasadena late this afternoon. “But there are (things done stylistically) that will make it really interesting.”

Haha that will be fun to watch.

I'm starting to get annoyed by these themed episodes.

I felt that way about 6 episodes into the second season.

It's like they realized they struck gold with the Paintball episode, and now every episode after it has to do the same thing.

yea lets forget about the pen ep, or the trampoline ep, or Troy's bday or Professor Professorson
