I mentioned in my comments on the Pilot that the show reminded me of "ANGEL mixed with a bit of Spawn, the Noble dead novel series by JC and Barb Hendee, and the Vampire Huntress Legend novel series by L.A. Banks", but tonight's episode brought the ANGEL influence to the forefront and stuck it there with cement.
Everything about this episode felt like it could've come straight out of the minds of Joss Whedon, David Greenwalt, Tim Minear, and the other ANGEL writers, and the characters, for the first time, lined up squarely with the ANGEL characters: Constantine is Angel (if Angel were fully human, that is), Zed is Cordelia, Chaz is Wesley, Manny is Lorne/Doyle/the Oracles, and Papa Midnite is Lindsey.
Story-wise, I loved the whole "devil's vinyl" plot, and kind of wish Constantine hadn't destroyed the bloody thing, because I think there's a lot more stories to be told using it as a 'macguffin'. I also really liked the way the episode explored the whole concept of a blues musician selling his soul to the devil in order to become successful, but do wish the writers had 'fictionalized' the real-life legend surrounding Robert Johnson rather than creating their own fictional blues musician character. I also liked finding out a bit more about Constantine's past.
The only thing I was confused about was the episode's ending. What was up with that girl with the cross and Papa Midnite burning that voodoo doll?
I'd also like to know why NBC didn't give us a specific preview for next week's episode.
