Constantine Season 1, Episode 3 "The Devil's Vinyl" General Discussion

^ You're going to have to go further than that to answer my question, because I still have no idea what you're talking about.

The scene when John was naked learning a new Spell when Zed entered the Mill House (or dare I say the show's own Stresham Lock-up). If can't possibly image Angel doing that knowing it'd unintentionally funny along the lines of him singing "Mandy" or dancing badly

@The Question: Thanks for the answer about the doll.

I don't watch "Supernatural", so, for me, ANGEL is the show I see this as most resembling (especially with the way the characters were used tonight).

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode.

The whole 'deadly radio music' thing felt like it could have been one of the one-off plots of Original Sins: ridiculous and satirical, yet still grotesque and unnerving, especially when they dig deeper into the underlying mythology.

John and Midnite were especially great.

Another solid episode.

The actor playing Papa has the right look not sold on the portrayal just yet.

This show gets better week by week.

Tonight's episode felt like it could of come straight from the Hellblazer comics.
I had some problems with tonight's episode. First off, The Sex Pistols thing was kind of cool but also kind of lame. If Constantine grew up in Liverpool during the height of the punk scene, he should have thirty bands he rates higher than the Pistols.

In terms of influence on the British punk scene and British music in general The Sex Pistols were were big so I could see why he might hold them in such high regard.

I'm hoping they have Constantine strut around to The Damned's New Rose one episode.

He lacked that cautious reverence for the relics he handles that he has in the comics. Also, I don't see Midnight hanging out in an abandoned warehouse with gangbangers. He's more of a penthouses and Italian suits kind of guy.

To be fair, it was them that inspired John and Gary to form Mucous Membrane

Show is awesome, is papamidnight like the arch-nemesis of constantine?

They were popular, sure, and they're a fine band all things considered, but most hardcore punks think they're super overrated (which they kind of are). They were more popular with newcomers to the scene than with veterans. Baby's first punk, basically.

I'm hoping they have Constantine strut around to The Damned's New Rose one episode.

That'd be nice.

Also, not British, but the Dead Kennedys own.

Yeah, because the Pistols got really popular and had a lot of groupie sex despite being a fairly mediocre punk band. They were inspired in a "if these *******s can do it, so can we!" kind of way.

This is the first episode of the series that clicked with me as a Hellblazer fan. I thought the first 2 sucked but this one just had so much cool stuff in it (I marked at the Ace of Whinchesters). Papa Midnite established as a frenemy, John the con finally really popping up etc. More good than bad and easily best episode of the series so far.

Sidenote: is that Mill supposed to be some NBC interpretation of the House of Mystery concept?

The demon Nergal and the first of the fallen are the closest thing Constantine has to an arch-enemy.

First of the Fallen got named dropped this episode. I forget that blonde woman's name but she mentioned it.

Out of the three episodes, this is by far the best one and my favorite. Everything really flowed naturally and I loved the introduction of Papa Midnight.

Episode was great. I also enjoyed all the Belphegor posters sitting about

More like the old storage lock-up where John kept all of the stuff (sans Fate helmut and Pandora's box)

the show is getting better with each passing episode. hope this trend continues.

loved the part where John busts into the radio stations listening to some Sex Pistols

So far it is getting better with each new episode.

Episode two was also quite good, but I believe I'd find it better if I haven't watched first eight seasons of Supernatural (should have stopped after sixth though...), which brings me to my point - they should avoid setting episodes in rural areas and small towns as it seems too similar to Supernatural that way. Using Chicago and other cities would easily distinguish visual and atmospheric aspect of the series.

I still have few quarrels with the show though:

I find it to be too light, it needs to feel grittier and be more dark. There should be a feeling that beyond the thin curtain of everyday life, world is much more ugly, desperate and threatening place that Hellblazer comic so often evoked.

I don't really like portrayal of magic so far. Or to be more precise I don't like the presence of so many new magical artifacts in every episode, like those St. Padua nails and magical card. If Constantine can make things easier by pulling a magical item out of his pocket anytime, it may become a Deus Ex Machina and kill the suspense.

I'm also not really fond of Constantines narration at the end of every episode, as I don't like that style at all, but that's just my stance on it.

Oh and, lastly, though it's been said thousands of times by everyone, I must add I am disappointed that he's not smoking. Well he is, but barely and the way he never inhales the smoke or light the cigarette in the shot will sooner or later become a bit odd and distracting. It might be even better to have him drop the cigarettes entirely than cheat it this way, as it is very noticeable.

I do think that show has a big potential to become really good though. Matt Ryan is perfect for Constantine, though they have made his character a bit too likeable and hero-like. A bit more cynicism and arrogance would do a world of good to the character. He's supposed to become likeable despite being bastard or to say it differently he's supposed to become likeable exactly by being selfish and unlikeable and not by being easy to sympathize with.

When I first picked up the Hellblazer comics Constantine was such a fresh character to me, and I find this show to go a bit too much "by the book" right now, with both characterizations and overall storytelling.

Again, Matt Ryan is so much fun to watch in this role and the potential for it is definitely there, that I really hope it'll last to become better. Hopefully they won't cancel it so soon and will give it a chance to flourish.

Easily my favorite episode of the three.

Not buying Zed's actress at all though. She's better than the girl they wrote out of the pilot, but there's just something in her delivery that takes me out of it.

Yeah, the actress playing Zed looks like she doesn't know what she's doing. It's jarring, because Constantine is really good and Chas is cool. But she just seems so unsure of herself. Nice to look at though.

I had the same thought. They made extra special care to mention how the rooms change size&shape. They re-emphasized how the place is bigger than it appears. All traits you could ascribe to The House of Mystery used in Justice League Dark's ongoing title currently.

I've only read a few issues of JLD, but I did get a HOM vibe here. My thought was, are we going to see Baron Winters?

Mind that they're also traits of the TARDIS, and as such are hardly unique traits. So, it could just as easily be a coicidence/case independent development.
