Constantine Season 1, Episode 1 "Non Est Asylum" General Discussion

A bit rushed, but I dug it. I can see why they canned the Liv character.

That's really my only criticism of the pilot. None of the scenes felt like they had room to breathe. But pilots are like that sometimes, so I can forgive it.

I thought it was very good. Constantine, as a character, takes awhile to adjust to (and yes I bought the Moore Swamp Thing stuff & 6 copies of Hellblazer #1 :-).

I was concerned that this pilot might dilute him right off the bat, but it didn't seem that way to me.

His moral ambivalence, self-righteousness & self-interest were all there.

I don't know how this is going to go over though. I hope Christian right-wing groups are highly indignant and make much noise. :woot:

I'm guessing we won't know why the ending is different from the leak?
The lead actress in the pilot got fired (maybe quit) and they hired a new one which will play a character from the comics. This character is the one painting the Hellblazer covers in the ending scene.

It was sold the new scenes from the leaked pilot didn't change my opinion on the overall episode. Matt Ryan is really good, charismatic & charming.

Agreed. That's my only complaint: the pacing. Good horror requires good suspense, and even the one-hour TV format didn't give Constantine enough breathing room to develop that. There were some pretty good horror beats in the pilot episode that could have been *great* scenes if they'd spent just a little more time building up the tension before the shock-drop. Hoping that, going forward, the show quits trying to cram too much into too little time, and starts embracing a slower pace to build a sense of dread and terror.

Hey, Amazon has the first episode available to purchase....for FREE. In HD! :)

The ending wasn't as good as the leaked version. Which is understandable as they had little choice. Hopefully though it means that the rest of the series will be even better.

I liked it a lot, and I'm glad they made the changes they did from the leaked version. Has anyone put together a comprehensive list of differences? I haven't seen the leaked version since it came out but I came away from this one a lot more optimistic than the original.

David S Goyer had a cameo in the leaked pilot.

But I think they got rid of it in the pilot that aired last night.

I never noticed that. And I've complete forgot about Ivy University being Ray Palmer's old alma mater

Darn good pilot. A solid story, some good scares, and incredible effects. Matt Ryan is just perfect for this role and absolutely killed it in the pilot.

I'm surprised Chas went out so quickly, but it makes sense given John's history.

Can't wait to see where this goes.

Pretty mediocre pilot, I liked the dude who played Constantine though.

So I watch the first episode and all I can say is awesome. I'm in no way an expert on John Constantine but I have read some stuff and Matt Ryan did a great job of playing him. He has the character pegged down to the teeth. I just hope that it can get high enough ratings to stay on the air.

Also I think will see Liv again she will probably become a reoccurring character.

As someone who knows squat about Constantine,it was alright.Nothing about it was a turn off,but it didn't really grab me as "must see tv",either.I'll probably check it out again in the future, but with an already full plate for tv,I don't know that I'll stick with it for the long run.

I remember the "official" line was that they were going "a different way" with the Liv situation.Any word on why she was written out beyond that?

I guess her performance as an actress is not very good for the show runners, so she is not going to appear anytime soon... though, I think we may see her again after some episodes.

I'm loving all the DC shows so far -

Flash
Arrow
Gotham
Constantine.

I occasionally watch AoS, so I may watch Agent Carter too.

Having only seen one, what's the easiest way to tell if i watched the leaked version or the final version of Ep1?

Thanks in advance!!

The leaked version didn't have the woman (Zed) drawing pictures of John Constantine at the end.

Okay, I've seen the leaked one then. Any point in watching Ep1?

Is there anything new apart from the ripoff scene from Heroes Ep1??

That ending was hilarious, how they wrote that character out. I understand what they had to do, that's just poor planning lmao, hopefully this means we'll see a much better next couple of episodes though.

The offical pilot has a few different scene's but it's not game changing.

Overall, just going on Pilots (albeit the wrong one in my case) I'm liking this more than Gotham.

Flash has been fun and i'll probably stick with that but I found Arrow so terribly bad that it might tarnish both for me.

*I've only seen the first episode of Arrow S3.
