I need help on this fantasy RPG that I've been planning. However I'm stuck as to which concept I should follow: the linear J-RPG path like FF or Suikoden, RPGs like Diablo. Or should I create something with much more freedom to it like Fallout, Arcanum and such?

I've already made a draft of the story and characters but unfortunately it feels pretty J to me. Which one should I try to do?

Maybe I should give a gist of the story, or the entire draft:

Azure: Legends of Alterra

Story:
On a world called Alterra, the east and west have been separated that a wide chasm called the Rift, so wide that no bird or dragon can fly over it. The Rift was formed when one of Alterra's two moons, the Azure moon, suddenly crashed into the planet a millennia ago, destroying the original 4 kingdoms and plunging the east into a period known as the Age of Chaos. During this age, a celestial being appeared in the form of a young woman, travelling Alterra and witnessed horrors as Warlords tried to pick up the pieces of the 4 kingdoms and establish themselves as rulers. Much blood was spilled over race, ideology, species and religion until one day, this celestial being met a young knight named Vlad who sought to bring peace to the land. Blaming the violence on ideological and cultural differences, Vlad sought to build a utopia where only one ideology and culture reigned. The celestial being fell in love with Vlad who christened her Azural and the two began their conquest. Azural wielded infinite sorcery while Vlad commanded legions of loyal Acolytes. Their good intentions to unite the world turned sour when all of the fighting factions of the East did unite...against them. After a great battle in the ruins of the Ancients, Vlad fell in battle, his death forcing his army to scatter while Azural disappeared off the face of the planet. Vlad's body was never found...

600 years later, 7 kingdoms have arisen in the east, some with roots to the 4 kingdoms, others new kingdoms forging their own legacies. The Age of Chaos had ended but war still reign through the east. Zhang Jiang, an aged advisor to the Empress of Zou, one of the original kingdoms of Alterra, seeks a way to attain youth and immortality, travels to the Northern ruins in hopes of discovering some secrets, only to awaken the sleeping Azural. Deciding that the time was ripe for her to return, Azural uses Zhang Jiang's unique ability of Necromancy and her own Demonology to raise an unholy army of dark minions to succeed where Vlad had failed. Attacking Zou and Xeria, her forces sweep through the land like a devastating plague, forcing the Empress of Zou to send out her daughter Sun Yi to form an alliance among the kingdoms to fight this mutual foe, but can the kingdoms put aside their hatreds and mistrust for one another long enough to face the common enemy or will their hatred doom them all?

Kingdom Description:

The Holy Xerian Empire:

The Holy Xerian Empire was one of the 4 Kingdoms before The Descent shattered the world and plunged Alterra into the Age of Chaos. During the Age of Chaos, Xeria was a war torn land ruled by Barons and Dukes of the original Xerian Kingdom who sought the opportunity to carve out the remains of the once great nation for themselves. It took nearly a century of war and three short dynasties before the Xerians began to unite under the banner of the Holy Light, the main Faith of Xeria. Through war and conversion, the Order of the Holy Light finally united Xeria and declared it the Holy Xerian Empire, championing their faith and ruling by religious mandates. In its first 100 years, the Hoy Xerian Empire’s control spread as far as the reaches of Fa’Zar and Kelan but the Sorathian rebellion and Lacin’s military conquests would later drain the Empire of its prestige and power. Ruled by the Holy Emperor, Xeria, though not as great as it once was, remains a power in the East, rivalling Zou in strength. The Xerians are famed for their Emerald Rangers and their War Dragon cavalry. The Empire is made mostly out of Humans but it is common to see Minotaur Merchants, Felinx vagrants and other pilgrims of all creeds and races on their way to The Holy City, capital of the Xerian Empire

Zou:

Old Zou legends state that Zou was created when the Dragon of the Earth agreed to marry the Phoenix of Heaven and from their marriage, the great civilisation of Zou was born. Like Xeria, Zou was one of the original 4 Kingdoms that ruled Alterra before the Decent destroyed all semblance of order in the world, however, unlike Xeria or Lacin, Zou was quick to recover from the debacle. Even prior to the Descent, Zou was considered to be a nation of intellects, ruled under the Principles set by the 12 Great Sages, near-divine figures in Zou culture. Under the teachings of the 12, Zou enjoyed wealth through agriculture, trade, and political and social reformations. Even then, they had an impressive military that was well coordinated and commanded by some of the finest strategists in Alterra’s history. For a short while, Zou was consumed by a number of succession wars after the Royal family was killed in the Descent. After the smoke settled, the Sun family earned their place on the Celestial Throne and have ruled since. Zou is a feared nation known for its vast armies and militaristic policies. During the reign of Emperor Sun Kai Shang, Zou waged war on its neighbours, the Monarchy of Lacin and Ying over the Disputed Territories, a cluster of unaligned islands located off the coast of Zou. These conflicts proved fatal for all sides involved and the Emperor would fall in battle in an assault against Ying. Empress Sun Qiyang, wife to Kai Shang, currently rules Zou. She continues to press on the war against Ying and control over the Disputed Territories, inspiring Patriotism from the populous of Zou.

Ying:

After the Age of Chaos, a small island off the coast of Zou broke away and claimed independence. This was Ying, populated by a people whose practices and culture differs greatly from their former overlords even though they appear similar to the casual onlooker. The Ying consider themselves the true children of Heaven and Earth, claiming that in the years of the succession wars that took place in the mainland, the Zou had forgotten the teachings of the 12 Great Sages. Their independence was not hard earned as the Zou themselves were too embroiled in restoring their once great nation to its place of power, leaving Ying to make a place for themselves. However, in the years after their independence, the Ying made bold steps to expand their rule into the mainland. Their ambitions were cut short when the Sun clan became the ruling family of Zou and swiftly crushed Ying’s delusions of grandeur. Ying is a mountainous island nation, which makes some parts of the island natural fortresses, which is how they have managed to repel Zou for so long. Aside from humans, Zou is also home to a race of Cat-like people who reside in the mountains known as the Felinx. Legend has is that the Felinx are the children of the Dragon of Earth and its mistress, the Tigress of the Sea. The Felinx are a monkish race, preferring to keep to themselves. However they are responsible for teaching the people of Ying some of their most efficient and deadly martial arts, including Shadow Arts, the style adopted by the illusive Ninja of Ying. They are ruled by a Shogun who commands legions of Bushi. However, Ying continues to be focal points of violence as the Zou see them as traitors to their nation. Despite this, Ying has been able to survive this long by cleverly forging trade alliances with Xeria and Lacin, both kingdoms being long time rivals and enemies of Zou.

The Monarchy of Lacin:

Lacin is an ancient kingdom ruled by Elves. Like Zou and Xeria, it was one of the 4 kingdoms, but lost nearly 3/4 of its kingdom when the Azure moon descended onto Alterra, separating East and West. Because of this, the Lacinards were forced to expand aggressively, coming into conflict with other nations and warlords. Their new domain once included the vast deserts of Fa’Zar however after years of poor management, failed agriculture reforms and rebellions from the native Fa’Zari who were being taxed heavily, the Lacinards were forced to give up much of its territory after years of fighting took its toll on the Monarchy. Lacin is an Elitist society where Elves make up the Upper Class, taking up positions from Councilmen to Generals while Humans and other races are deemed Second-class or lower citizens, given menial tasks such as farming or construction. The Elves of Lacin have long been fascinated in the ways of Alchemy and sorcery, which is why of all the kingdoms; they are the most advanced in magicks. Their cities are also fortified by the presence of large cannon towers that defend the coast and its borders. Despite their elitist rule, Lacin has a large population of non-Elves that are deeply loyal to the Monarchy. Though charged with lesser tasks and often bullied by the all-too cocky Elves, non-Elven citizens of the Monarchy can hold titles above their Elven masters depending on their contributions to Lacin. Some of these lucky few are even privy to the thoughts and decisions of the Archon, whose word is law. The Monarchy is ruled by an Archon who must be an Elf of the Viridius bloodline. The Lacinards have a long-standing hatred against their one-time vassals, the Fa'Zari.

Sorath:

Sorath is not a kingdom by any means, but rather a state ruled by three Warlords vying for control of the land. A breakaway from Xeria, Sorath is a desolate place consumed in civil war as the three ruling Houses: Hector, Thorne and Marius struggle for total dominance. Sorath’s past is covered in as much blood as its present. During the waning years of the Holy Xerian Empire after its devastating war with Lacin over Fa’Zar, three generals of the Xerian army plotted a coup against the Holy Emperor. The plot was discovered early in its planning stages but the generals, Marius, Hector and Thorne fled to the south of the Xerian continent and prepared for a reprisal from the Xerian forces. But with its most important elements of its military locked in combat with Lacin, the Xerians could not field an effective force to deal with the treacherous generals whom were masters of war. Sorath’s war of secession was short but brutal and resulted in half the Xerian continent falling to Sorath. The Holy Xerian Empire’s power base was shattered, leaving the Sorathians to bicker among themselves to decide who shall rule Sorath. The bickering and bloodshed has gone on for nearly 200 years. However, there are times when the three houses find themselves in agreement such as when an invading army attacks or if they believe that they should try to invade others. When in unison, the three houses lay devastation to nearly all who oppose them, only Fa'Zar and Geradon can lay claim to actually defeating the united might of Sorath. The Sorathians pride themselves on their brutal Gothic Knights, a legion of their finest infantry and are arguably the greatest infantry in the East. An Archduke rules House Hector, Marius by a Baron and Thorne can only be commanded by a woman with a strong command of sorcery and magick to attain the title of Witch Queen

Geradon:

During the period of the 4 Kingdoms, the Xerian fief lords kept whole communities of slaves to serve them, forbidding them the knowledge of reading or writing. As the Azure Moon descended and the Age of Chaos began, these slaves escaped their overlords, travelling by sea to a cluster of snowy islands south of the Xerian continent. There, the slaves divided themselves by the fiefs they once served and became the Clans of Geradon. They are feared warriors but are more known for their skills as sailors. The nine clans that make up Geradon live in surprising harmony, each clan ruled by a Chieftain and a Chieftain is chosen to become High Chieftain of the Clans based on his reputation as a warrior. Though their population is small as compared to nations like Fa'Zar, they were able to repel an invasion by the dreaded Sorathians, soundly defeating them at sea and later, taking the fight to Sorath itself along with their Fa'Zari allies. The Geradon language was at one time only verbal, but after an alliance was made with Fa'Zar, the Fa'Zari scholars had discovered and reintroduced runes that the Geradon clansmen had used as a language before their enslavement. Geradon is the staunch ally of Fa'Zar, its current High Chieftain, Nevarr Stromsword treating the Khalifah of Fa’Zar as his own son.

The Caliphate of Fa'Zar:

The desert region of Fa'Zar has a history of being conquered. Before the Descent, Fa'Zar was at one time the neglected desert territories of Xeria and during the Age of Chaos; it was torn apart by Xerian Warlords hoping to carve out fiefs for themselves at the expense of the local population who suffered greatly. Then came the Lacinards having lost most of their realm to the Rift, conquered Fa'Zar from its rivals, establishing a caste system that placed the desert dwelling Fa'Zari in its lowest level. For three hundred years, the Fa’Zari had never ruled Fa’Zar until the Akdar tribe rebelled against the Lacinards along with the other 4 tribes that made up the Fa'Zari. Together they pushed the Lacinards out and the tribes elected the Akdar bloodline to rule over Fa'Zar. Fa'Zar is a strange mix of militarism and theology, but places high emphasis on religion and education. Ruled by nearly 23 generations of Akdar, Fa'Zar has known great peace and prosperity until a recent assault by a Sorath-Lacin alliance snapped up half their territory. The young Prince Mikha’il Akdar assumed the throne and reclaimed the lost territories in a short period of two years, dealing with the rebellious Ismin tribe that has feuded with the Akdars since the birth of the Caliphate. Despite his victories, Khalifah Mikha’il grew unpopular among the people who considered him a warmonger. Accepting the fact that he was more of a warrior and a general than a ruler, Mikhail abdicated the throne and left it to his younger brother Musa before disappearing. The Fa'Zari are well known for their Cavaliers as they have a strong connection to horses. The Futawwa Outriders are the deadliest cavalry on Alterra who serve only the Khalifah. The Fa’Zari are also known for their sporadic tactics that boggles the minds of even the most experienced of generals, originating from the stratagems of Harun Akdar, the leader of the Fa’Zari rebellion and the first Khalifah of Fa’Zar who mastered the art of desert and cavalry warfare after years of conflict with the Lacinards.

Other states and nations:

Kelan:

Called the jewel of the East, Kelan is a magnificent island state west of the Xerian continent. It was built by the Minotaurs of Xeria, these ancient beings enslaved by the Humans that had come to power. After the Descent, the Minotaurs, along with slaves of other races fled to Kelan with a promise of freedom for all and built a neutral nation for themselves. Their greatest city and capital is Orith, considered by many to be Alterra's most beautiful city. Kelan is populated by an assortment of races, from Humans to Elves to the cat-like Felinx people. Kelan is ruled by the Doge, who is elected by the people regardless of his/her race. Their neutrality also allows them to enjoy great trade with the other nations, making them one of the wealthiest on Alterra.

The Ismin Dominion:

A small state wedged between Fa'Zar and Lacin, the Ismin Dominion is populated by the Ismin tribe whom were exiled by their fellow Fa’Zari and ousted by their former overlords. Their exile came about hundreds of years ago when the leader of the Ismin tribe refused to help the other Fa'Zari rebel against the Lacinards, instead choosing to side with the Overlords. After the Lacinards were defeated, the other tribes refused to allow the Ismin into their newly found cities and settlements, deeming them outsiders. Even their former masters turned on them, believing that they had secretly aided the rebels against Lacin, which caused their defeat. The bad blood between Akdar and Ismin has fuelled only more anger, and during the Sorath-Lacin invasion of Fa’Zar, the Ismin tribe attempted to claim territories for themselves only to have their forces slain by Fa’Zari troops. Zahra Ismin, daughter of Yassir Ismin, now rules the Dominion. Zahra's hatred for Mikha’il Akdar is legendary and it is whispered that she had attempted an assassination of Akdar during Fa’Zar’s war of retaliation against Sorath that was costing Fa’Zar too many lives. The attempt failed and Zahra was oddly released. Even now she continues to plot against Fa'Zar regardless of the mercy shown to her by Mikha’il Akdar with a fervour and fury that has earned her the name Zahra the Vicious. The Dominion is home to the Sisterhood of Shadows, formerly a male assassin sect. That changed when the Akdars slaughtered all the males of the order after an assassin tried to take the life of an Akdar Khalifah, leaving only the women and children alive. They are a feared sect who is believed to have thought Zahra how to fight. The symbol of the Dominion is the Chimera’s Tail, often mistaken as a Scorpion’s tail, the same mark that is wrapped around Zahra’s right arm. The Ismin are best known for their Black Sky Raiders, a cavalry that is in many ways opposite to their Caliphate counterparts. Whereas the Outriders are lightly armoured in Chain mail and seasoned leather and are generally armed with reed lances, Shamsir scimitars and steel bucklers, the Raiders are hardly ever armoured, carry only Kilij scimitars and strong bows to provide more manoeuvrability and mobility. Hit and run tactics are their forte and the Dominion has used them to strike at both the Caliphate and the Monarchy.

The Republic of Kobard:

Like Kelan, Kobard is a neutral nation, centrally positioned near many of the kingdoms. This location made Kobard popular among mercenaries who hired themselves out to the Kingdoms, and thus, Kobard gave the mercenaries a substantial port-city that many call the Mercenaries' Star; in return they would receive 20% of the Mercenaries' earnings. Kobard is ruled by a Primus and is known for being a crime-ridden and chaotic nation.

He is also often the object of affection in the eyes of many women, the sight of him would immediately spark giggles and smiles amongst the young maidens of Zou though Ma Yun seems completely oblivious about his effects on women, concentrating on the perfection of his fighting arts and his studies of war stratagems. As scion of the famed Ma family, Ma Yun is trained in the ancient arts of Ma Blade Mastery, a hereditary style passed down from generation to generation in the Ma Clan. Weight: 68 Kg
Hair: Black

Weapon: Jackal Tooth Kilij
Little is known about this mercenary except that he hails from the desert kingdom of Fa’Zar. His reputation is something of a mixed bag. Many agree that Jafaar is easy to get along with but find that he keeps to himself. He is also known as a skilled swordsman, offered numerous invitations to join various Mercenary Guilds but turned them down to remain a free agent yet he spends more time slacking off at the local inn than looking for work. He is a notoriously bad card player but that doesn’t stop him from trying, earning him sympathy from his fellow mercenaries. A neat scar across his face easily identifies him, which he claimed he received in combat with Sorathian Gothic Knights, prompting his mercenary friends to call him ‘Scar face’ though he openly dislikes being called that. Noticed by his odd habits (he can’t sleep in quiet places, preferring the comforts of loud and congested pubs or inns) and rudeness towards employers he disagrees with, Jafaar doesn’t make many friends outside the mercenaries but is held in high regard for getting the job done. He wields a scimitar commonly used by desert bandits and outriders, a Jackal Tooth.

She has a habit of overspending after getting paid, forcing her to resort to her other skills to make her daily bread. Small and nimble, Aki is a student of Ying’s infamous Ninja arts and with her catlike agility and reflexes; she is a most formidable warrior. She is also versed in Ninja magic, namely shadowcasting and illusions. Easy-going and confident in her own abilities, Aki tends to get on the nerves of fellow mercenary Jafaar whom she calls Scar face simply to annoy him but often ends up borrowing money from the Fa’Zari swordsman. She’s also a huge romantic, believing in love at first sight and forbidden love to the dismay of her current crush Ma Yun. Aki is deadly with a number of weapons and is skilled in hand-to-hand combat; however she is most proficient with Kunai throwing knives that she seems to have in spades

Name: Olaff Ironaxe
Age: 47
Sex: Male
Height: 196 cm
Weight: 115 Kg
Hair: Steel grey
Eyes: Blue
Occupation: Mercenary
Allegiance: Geradon
Weapon: ‘Fafnir’ War Axe
In his homeland of Geradon, Olaff could have easily become Chieftain of his clan with his incredible reputation as a warrior. Instead, the Clansman decided to become a mercenary in hopes of seeking out adventure. Olaff is an old Warhorse, respected by nearly every mercenary who chose to take up the life of a pay-soldier. Known for his wisdom, gruff yet warm attitude, Olaff is a popular man between both his fellow Geradon Clansmen and the mercenaries, often playing the role of mentor to the younger mercenaries, including Aki and Jafaar to some extent. Most assume that Olaff is simply a muscle-bound warmonger looking for the nearest battlefield, an assumption based on his intimidating build and the two skulls he hangs onto his belt. The skulls of two worthy opponents he defeated, keeping the skulls as a sign of respect rather than as trophies. In truth, Olaff is a peaceful man, preferring simple adventure to wanton bloodshed and carnage. He is known for turning down high-paying jobs, namely pillaging runs and raids, simply because he has no desire to partake in unnecessary bloodletting. He is bound to his mercenary honour, never turning back on his word and will always see whatever job he takes to the end, no matter how unhappy he might be at the outcome. He wields a deadly double-edged War axe, a common weapon from his native Geradon that he calls Fafnir.

Name: Zahra Ismin
Age: 25
Sex: Female
Height: 179 cm
Weight: 57 Kg
Hair: Auburn Red
Eyes: Amber
Occupation: Emir of the Ismin
Allegiance: The Ismin Tribe
Weapon: Scorpion Blade
Born in the unforgiving Great Desert of Fa’Zar, Zahra is the leader of the Ismin, a tribe of Fa’Zari outcasts exiled into the deserts since Fa’Zar became a nation. It comes as little surprise that such a harsh environment would have raised Zahra to be equally as harsh and unforgiving, as well as deadly and cunning. The Sisterhood of Shadows, an assassin sect made up by the women of the Ismin, trained Zahra in the art of combat, allowing her to master numerous techniques and styles until she ultimately surpassed her teachers, becoming Fa’Zar’s greatest warrior. The tattoo of a Scorpion’s tail curled around her right arm symbolizing her mastery of the Sisterhood’s arts and her high rank within the organization. Aside from her fighting ability, Zahra is an exceptional leader admired for her tactical acumen and feared for her vicious approach. Since assuming the leadership of her tribe from her father, she has been a thorn at the side of Caliphate of Fa’Zar, waging her family’s vendetta against the ruling Akdar bloodline that exiled the Ismin generations ago. It is whispered she has a deep hatred for the former Khalifah, Mikha’il Akdar who abdicated the throne and disappeared off the face of the desert. Zahra’s dream is to one day topple the Akdars, to right the wrongs that had been dealt to her people and to build a stronger Fa’Zar. And she is willing to do so by any means necessary. Zahra is a master of the dreaded Scorpion Blade, a chain-like weapon used by only the highest-ranking members of the Sisterhood. She is also highly proficient with Fire sorcery, fitting her own fiery personality. Her skills and temperament has earned her the title: Zahra the Vicious.

Name: Victor Darkholme
Age: 32
Sex: Male
Height: 179 cm
Weight: 69 Kg
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Grey
Occupation: Apprentice
Allegiance: The Thorne Dominion, Sorath
Weapon: Black Hex Staff
Victor Darkholme is the greatest sorcerer in the entire East. Or so he tells himself and anyone willing to listen to his far-fetched tales of mythical creatures, temple virgins and huge fortunes. In truth, Victor is an apprentice of one of Sorath’s Warlords, the Witch-Queen Lillian, who chose him simply because she was drawn to his roguish charms. Because of this, Victor is often kept on a short leash, the Witch-Queen distrusting of her favoured apprentice to the dismay of the charmer Darkholme who would rather spend more of his time flirting with the ladies of the court than master the sorcery he so claims to be proficient with. Victor’s less than loyal attitude towards the Witch-Queen has evoked the wrath of his mistress, often ending up with him being held in the dungeon for a few days till the Queen finds it in her heart to forgive him (which she usually does), however this doesn’t stop him from chasing every pretty face he comes across. Despite his lack of determination towards his goal of becoming a full-fledged sorcerer, Victor does have some natural ability, able to master spells and hexes quickly. He is also able to summon certain creatures to fight his battles for him. Victor casts his spells with a Black Hex Staff given to him by his mistress, allowing him to harness magick more easily.

Name: Mikha’il Akdar

Mikha’il Akdar succeeded his father in Fa’Zar’s darkest hour when the combined forces of Lacin and Sorath snapped up nearly half of his dominion. At the tender age of 15, Mikha’il led his first battle against the Sorathians and stunned the enemy with a sweeping victory. In less than 2 years since he ascended the throne, Mikha’il was able to reclaim all of Fa’Zar’s territories lost to its enemies alongside its ally Geradon that was also invaded by Sorath. With his strategic abilities and well-coordinated forces, he dealt the invaders a stunning string of defeats and was able to curb an Ismin rebellion. He became a hero to his people; the Khalifah who saved Fa’Zar from imminent destruction, however for the young Mikha’il, simply defeating his enemies was not enough. After securing peace with Fa’Zar’s immediate neighbours, the Monarchy of Lacin, Mikha’il began a campaign against the instigators of the Sorath-Lacin invasion, the Sorathians. Forming an alliance with the clans of Geradon, Mikha’il struck hard at Sorath, driving the enemy deep into their territory but not without casualties. As the body count rose, Mikha’il’s people demanded that he be removed from the throne, calling him a warmonger for his bloody war that was costing Fa’Zar too many lives. An assassination attempt by Zahra Ismin force Akdar to realize the error of his ways, Zahra reminding Mikha’il that it was not territory that made a nation but the people. Mikha’il returned home along with his armies. Accepting the fact that he was more of a commander than he was a ruler, Mikha’il decided to abdicate the throne, relinquishing the title of Khalifah to his younger brother Musa. Shortly after, Mikha’il disappeared but swore that he would return if ever his brother or the Caliphate were threatened.

Name: Catherine Pagetos
Age: 126
Sex: Female
Height: 172 cm
Weight: 56 Kg
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Blue
Occupation: Lacinard General
Allegiance: The Monarchy of Lacin
Weapon: ‘Blizzard’s Kiss’ Spatha
Cousin to the current Archon of Lacin, Catherine Pagetos is a true daughter of the Monarchy. Born to the prominent Elven House of Pagetos, Catherine was privy to education and opportunities available to only the Elves of Lacin that made up the first class of the Lacinards’ citizenship. She immediately became enthralled by the world of military strategies and tactics, instantly deciding that she would make a career in the Lacinard Royal Legion. Though her family initially balked at the idea of having their daughter take up the sword, they eventually accepted her path and chose to support her by sending her to some of Lacin’s finest military academies. Eventually, Catherine would have her chance to prove her ability as a commander when a small border dispute between Lacin and Fa’Zar broke out. The dispute threatened to escalate into a full-blown war, but through swift and decisive action, Catherine was able to defeat her Fa’Zari adversaries and defend the borders of her kingdom. So famed is she that her enemies often referred to her as “The Lady of the Frost” because of her ability to wield Ice magic with devastating effect. Catherine continued to serve in the Legion for nearly 70 years and remained undefeated until a confrontation with Mikha’il Akdar, Khalifah of Fa’Zar, drove her and the Monarchy’s Legions all the way back into Lacinard territory during the failed Lacinard-Sorathian invasion of Fa’Zar. Her defeat at Mikha’il’s hands stunned her, especially after discovering that he was but 17 years of age and had only two years worth of experience in command. The two met briefly when Fa’Zar decided to end its war with Lacin by suing for peace and they grew to have deep respect for one another. To this day, Catherine regards Khalifah Mikha’il as the greatest commander who ever lived. Like all Elves, Catherine has a longer life span than humans and despite her age, she is still considered young by some of her peers (whose ages range between 200 to 300) and retains much of her youth. In fact, to a non-Elven onlooker, Catherine could be no older than 20. A diligent and virtuous general, Catherine has never once sent her soldiers on missions or tasks that she would not do herself. Armed with a Spatha, the symbolic sword of the Monarchy, the famed ‘Blizzard’s Kiss’, Catherine will always ride into battle with a clear mind and the bravery of a hundred lions.

In Fa’Zar she is considered a mythical Ifrit whilst Geradon folklore claims that see is a Valkyrie from The Halls of the Fallen lost in the mortal realm when the Azure Moon fell. Years after her awakening, the beautiful Moon Child wandered aimlessly throughout the East and witnessed firsthand the carnage and bloodshed that ensued in the Age of Chaos. She observed silently, uncertain of what her purpose was, unaware of the immense power she controlled until she met a hopeful young Knight named Vlad. A deserter from an army of a powerful Warlord, Vlad grew tired of the fighting he was forced to endure as rivalling conquerors and would-be kings tore through the East, bringing suffering to all. Citing the differences of cultures and ideologies as the reasons for conflict, Vlad dreamed of a world free of differences. An utopia of peace and equality. The Moon Child was drawn to Vlad’s pure ideals and ambitions and followed him as he began to preach his dream. Vlad would later name the woman Azural, after the fallen sphere that would bring a new beginning to the world. Together, they amassed legions of followers: Soldiers abandoning their old allegiances in pursuit of a peaceful world, civilians hoping to aid in the creation of a new age. With Azural’s raw mystical power and Vlad’s own natural leadership, Vlad’s legions swept across Xeria and Zou like a plague, earning a string of victories that brought them closer to their dream of a united world. Bitter was the irony when the fighting factions of the East did unite, against them. Slowly, Vlad’s dream was crumbling all around him and even with the power of Azural; he could not stave off the legions that sought to destroy him. In the famed Battle of the Northern Ruins, Vlad made his last stand against the combined forces of Zou, Xeria and the numerous Warlords that ruled the land. It was a brutal battle, with thousands falling on both sides. Azural single-handedly wiped out half the enemy’s number but even with her incalculable power, she was unable to save her beloved Vlad whom was slain in battle. Upon word of Vlad’s death, his legions scattered, leaving Azural to face the armies of the enemy herself. With all her strength, Azural shattered the Northern continent, destroying the rest of the enemy before a erecting a dark tower on the spot of Vlad’s death, an eternal reminder of the bloodiest battle in the written history of Alterra. No one knew what became of Azural after the battle. Some whispered she simply faded into the shadows of time, others say she still resides in the Tower of the Fallen Conqueror, watching over the corpse of her beloved master. Nearly 600 years passed and Azural eventually became forgotten by all except one man: the sage Zhang Jiang of Zou. In his quest for knowledge, the sage has reawakened the Moon Child from her slumber. Now after 600 years, Alterra has not changed, with war and conflict between the original kingdoms and the newly formed nations still being waged. Witnessing Zhang Jiang’s unique ability of Necromancy after she tried to be rid of him, Azural now sees opportunity to realise Vlad’s ambitions by using the aged Necromancer. Forcing Zhang to be a catalyst for her power, Azural has resurrected the fallen soldiers of the Battle of the Northern Ruins, creating a vast legion of Undead soldiers. Also, she was quick to form alliances with the insidious shape shifting Yuan Ti’ and the industrious Nagas, two reptilian races whom settled in the frostbitten lands of the North whilst Azural slept. With the promise of power and a new world order, Azural began her assault anew on an unsuspecting world, Xeria and Zou being the first to taste her wrath as she advances unchallenged. Azural is being of pure energy, her power is immeasurable and it is said that she is immortal which could be how she has survived so long without aging. Despite her power, Azural has little control of it and is unable to channel it in any other way but to destroy. Because of this, she requires Zhang Jiang to help channel her power through him while he uses her energies to revive the dead. Azural is also in possession of Vlad’s body, still intact even after all these years but remains lifeless. Azural hopes to resurrect her beloved once all of Alterra falls to her and then he can awaken to the world he had always dreamed of. Azural is ruthless and cruel, never hesitant to kill or torture anything or anyone to get her way. Zhang Jiang knows this first hand as Azural often encourages his cooperation by allowing him to taste her power in all its glory.

In his youth, Zhang Jiang travelled the land in search of knowledge and mysteries to unravel, venturing as far as Fa’Zar and even sailing the edge of the Rift to sate his nearly insatiable thirst for answers. His quests gained him fame throughout his homeland of Zou and upon returning he was more than happy to share the wisdom he had attained from his journeys. So active was he in his sojourns for knowledge, many called him the 13th Great Sage, acknowledging his accomplishments and admiring his resolve and determination. He continued to travel the East well into his 5th decade when his health began to show signs of weakness. Around that time, he was approached by the Sun family to become a teacher to the heirs of the throne and advisor to the ruler of the land. Realising that his journeying days were over, Zhang Jiang accepted the offer and under his tutelage, 3 heirs of the Sun became respected and wise rulers. His favoured student, Sun Kai Shang often depended on Master Zhang’s opinions and upon ascending the throne, gave Zhang the title of “General of the Western Star”, in reference to Zhang Jiang’s birth star. With his new rank, Zhang Jiang was also given the responsibilities of inspecting many of Zou’s legions and defences. During a trip to a military base, Zhang Jiang encountered a young boy with strange silver hair and striking red eyes. He appeared to have been beaten severely and was nearly at the point of death when the old Sage had found him. Later, Zhang Jiang adopted the boy as his Page and he would continue to serve him till he came of age. Naming the boy Shen, Zhang Jiang raised and thought him all he knew of the world whilst encouraging him to take up Martial Arts. Shen would not disappoint his Master, becoming a Virtuoso of the Zou Sabre and later becoming a member of the Seven Swords; Zou’s seven deadliest warriors loyal to the Celestial Throne. Shortly after the death Kai Shang, at the request of the newly inaugurated Empress Sun Qiyang, Zhang Jiang began to tutor her oldest daughter, Princess Sun Yi. To his surprise, Sun Yi displayed intelligence and prowess that surpassed his previous students and was quick to master the protocols of the Imperial Court, foreign languages, Philosophy and sorcery. Zhang Jiang considers the Princess to be his finest student and cares deeply for the heiress to the throne, treating her like a surrogate daughter. Shortly after the Empress resumed her husband’s campaigns to claim the Disputed Territories, Zhang Jiang requested that he be sent on an expedition to the Northern Ruins to seek the power that aided Vlad centuries ago for Zou. Though sceptical, the Empress granted the aging Sage his request and sent him with a small expedition force to the Northern Ruins. After weeks of travelling, Master Zhang reached the fields of the Massacre of the North, the site of the Battle of the Northern Ruins. There he found the legendary Tower of the Fallen Conqueror but upon entering it, he had unwittingly awakened the slumbering Azural who punished Zhang Jiang’s expedition force by killing the old sage’s entire entourage effortlessly. Fearing for his life, Zhang Jiang raised the bodies of his fallen retainers with the art of Necromancy, a long forgotten Dark Art he had learned in the course of his travels, to defend him. Upon witnessing this, Azural overpowered the old man but spared his life in order to make use of his knowledge. Forcing the sage to raise the fallen soldiers of the North whom rested for 600 years, Azural launched a brutal attack of Xeria and Zou, using Zhang Jiang’s knowledge of Zou’s defences to deal a devastating blow to his homeland. Even as Azural uses his body as a conduit for her energy, Zhang Jiang’s body continues to fail and silently hopes that he can find a way to escape her clutches.

Name: Shen
Age: 21
Sex: Male
Height: 176 cm
Weight: 62 Kg
Hair: Silver
Eyes: Red
Occupation: Swordsman of the Seven Swords
Allegiance: The Imperial Kingdom of Zou
Weapon: Zou Jian
Since his birth, Shen was hated and feared as an omen of misfortune and was often beaten up by the people of his town because of his unusual appearance. After his mother’s death, Shen travelled the coast of Zou aimlessly only to receive the same harsh treatment from all who crossed his path. “Demon spawn”, “Omen”, “Devil child”; these names were often heaped upon by onlookers while others simply took the opportunity to harm him. Such would be his life for many years until he encountered an old man who nursed him back to health after a severe thrashing. Shen’s appearance did not bother Zhang Jiang who had seen people of all species and races in his travels and took the boy under his wing. After years of abuse, Shen had finally found acceptance in the form of the famed sage Zhang Jiang who was eager to groom Shen to be a proper gentleman of the Imperial Court. At Zhang’s request, Shen took up swordsmanship and found himself to be natural at wielding the Zou Sabre. His skills increased at such an alarming pace, his teachers had ran out of lessons to teach him and was scouted by the Seven Swords whom were hoping to bolster their ranks with young blood. Shen joined the Swords later, becoming the retainer of young Princess Sun Yi whom was drawn to Shen’s calm demeanour and manners. Since joining up with the Seven Swords, Shen has often been called the Sword Demon by his peers for his unrivalled skill with a sword. It has been said that Shen is the best swordsman to ever join the Seven Swords throughout its 300-year existence. Shen is loyal to Zou but his true loyalties lie with his teacher and surrogate father Zhang Jiang whom he would give his life for. He has some feelings for the young heiress of the Zou Throne but prefers to keep his emotions in check, leaving Sun Yi to feel awkward at her approaches.

Name: Tseng
Age: 27
Sex: Male
Height: 173 cm
Weight: 64 Kg
Hair: Black
Eyes: Dark Brown
Occupation: Swordsman of the Seven Swords
Allegiance: The Imperial Kingdom of Zou
Weapon: Three Sectional Staff
Tseng is the leader of the latest incarnation of the Seven Swords and is something of a perfectionist. Upon assuming control of the legendary order, Tseng respectful requested that the older members of the Swords retire from their positions to make room for younger blood that Tseng believed was vital to the survival of the Order. He travelled the land far and wide in his quest to recruit the best and brightest Zou had to offer, scaling the mountains of the Northern regions to reach the reclusive North tribes of Zou and sailing to the Zou controlled islands of the Disputed Territories. His journeys bore fruit and he encountered many skilled warriors however, he realised that many of them had different ideals and ethics from him. Warriors like Wong and Yao needed to be defeated before accepting his offer while others like Chae and Lee Man joined without any reason, though Tseng has long suspected that it has little to do with loyalty to the Celestial Throne. Regardless, Tseng accepted them along with the Sword prodigy Shen and Liang, a Chakram mistress from the Northern Mountains to form the new Seven Swords. They proved their worth and skills in the battles for the Disputed Territories as well as the ongoing war with Ying. However, Tseng along with five other members of the Seven Swords fell before Azural’s might without much work, leaving only Shen to face down the Moon Child. Admitting that it would be a waste to let such excellent warriors go, Azural salvaged their souls and demanded that Zhang Jiang resurrect their bodies. After which, Azural enslaved the zombie warriors and have used them in her campaign of annihilation.

Its very hard not to kick myself in the head for doing this. Maybe its because the posts are too long. Or maybe because nobody really gives a ****. Ah well...
