Peter is nerdy. That's who he is. He's a Science geek and nerd. He doesn't skateboard, or sit in class brooding with his hood up or any of the other hipster type of nonsense that Webb has polluted the character with.
Peter Parker is the hard luck guy who overcomes adversity. He's Marvel's little engine that could. His inner strength is always coming through in all three movies.
That's not true at all. MJ's broken homes aspect is why the character fought so hard to be a success. She said that in the first movie where she can't wait to escape her home life, get to the city and make something of herself.
Those harsh home insecurities show through, like when she's being slammed by the critics in 3 and she says she reads their words and it's like her father wrote them.
Some fans just overlook these character nuances and focus on small aspects like her being captured and exaggerate it as though it was the bulk of the character's story when it was a minority.
OH NO! A-a-a-a-HOODIE! WHAT HIPSTER CRAP HATH WEBB WROUGHT UPON US WHEN PETER PARKER WEARS A HOODIE! THE HUMANITY!!!!!! AN OTUCAST TEENAGER IN TODAY'S MODERN WORLD MUST ALWAYS LOOK LIKE A STEREOTYPICAL 60'S NERD WITH BLACK FRAMED GLASSES AND POCKET PROTECTOR!!!!!!!!! HOW DARE SOMETHING BE EVEN THE SLIGHTEST BIT CONTEMPORARY!!!! EVEN SOMETHING AS BENIGN AS A HOODIE!!!!!!
I wear hoodies all the time. I used to skateboard for a spell as a kid too. I guess I'm a hipster. Hell, I guess everybody with a hoodie is a hipster. Tell you what, go to the local skate park and call the skaters hipsters. See where that gets you.
Yes, I know Peter is a nerd. But he isn't the social inept loser Raimi makes him out to be. My point is, Peters resolve never came through for me in those films. Peter takes his lumps, keeps his chin up, makes a wise-ass remark or too and keeps on trucking. He takes to web-slinging to clear his head. He doesn't get the equivalent of erectile disfunction because stuff is weighing down on him. You know what Peter does a lot of the time in the comics when it's all too much? He gets angry. He's gets pissy. He gets moody and sometimes he pushes people away that dont' deserve it. Maguire's Peter just acts like his kitten got run over.
And with MJ, eh. The writing for her was just atrocious. Nothing more to discuss. Her life and her choices were never properly explored for her to be anything other than a goal. A plot point. An achievement.

I just don't like the over- exaggeration of how terrible MJ was in the Raimi trilogy. Yeah she was kinda whiny in the 3rd film but her reasons were justifyable to an extent.
