BLADE RUNNER And GHOST IN THE SHELL Inspired CD Projekt Red To Make CYBERPUNK 2077

CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person shooter with some heavy RPG elements, which is more similar to Deus Ex than The Witcher 3, the acclaimed studio's last major release at first glance. Just like in that Warren Spector-created series, 2077's open-world will give the player a plenty of ways to finish a single objective and nothing will stop you from discovering the metropolis your own way.

According to the game’s Senior Quest Designer Philipp Weber, CDP Red took a closer look at some of the best-known sci-fi properties while thinking about making Cyberpunk 2077. “The core of the inspiration: the entire studio likes Cyberpunk 2020, the pen and paper, and just, generally, cyberpunk as a genre, movies like Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, books like Neuromancer,” said Weber.

So this is the same reason why we also made The Witcher, because we really, really love it and want to make a good video game with that in mind, that we want to play ourselves," the designer added.

Back in June, when the first jaw-dropping gameplay trailer for the game was released, CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 is being made by more than 350 developers and the team is only growing. CD Project expects that the marketing budget for the shooter will be even bigger than the one for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (which had a $35 million budget for marketing). The CEO also revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 is designed to be "bigger" than their last RPG opus magnum.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a narrative-driven, open world RPG set in the most vibrant and dangerous metropolis of the future — Night City. You play as V, a hired gun on the rise, who just got their first serious contract. In a world of cyberenhanced street warriors, tech-savvy netrunners and corporate life-hackers, today is your first step to becoming an urban legend. Cyberpunk 2077 is set in the same universe as Mike Pondsmith's classic pen & paper RPG system, Cyberpunk 2020.

Cyberpunk 2077's release date has not been officially revealed yet.

The World Of CYBERPUNK 2077 Will Be Handcrafted With No Procedurally Generated Elements

Even though we've less than an hour's worth of gameplay, CD Projekt Red, the publisher behind acclaimed games like The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, has still managed to capture the attention of gamers everywhere with Cyberpunk 2077.

While the exciting combat and RPG elements undoubtedly played a large part in sparking the interest of fans, it was the highly detailed and rich world of Cyberpunk 2077 that hooked many viewers.

Now, thanks to an interview with Jeux Act (translated by Wccftech), lead cinematic animator Maciej Pietras has revealed one of the reasons the world presented in the trailers looks to be of such high quality.

According to Pietras, absolutely no elements in Cyberpunk 2077 are procedurally generated. Instead, everything will be handcrafted because they, as the animator put it, "believe that quality comes first through manual creation."

Aside from explaining how the game's setting was created, the developer also reiterated that the story will take place entirely in Night City—although he makes it clear that this doesn't mean the world won't be as large as the one featured in The Witcher III.

"Measuring the size of the open world of Cyberpunk 2077 is difficult. To compare it to The Witcher 3, let’s say that the world of the latter was very vast in its length. It was an open world made of very large natural landscapes. Going from point A to point B took a lot of time, because you were riding, but also because it was a game that stretched horizontally. The world of Cyberpunk 2077 is above all a vertical world, with buildings everywhere, and in this, it is difficult for us to establish a metric comparison. In the demo, you saw the main character waking up in his apartment, looking out his window and seeing a living world. To go out, take the elevator, you can see that there are several floors in a building."
In all, it looks like CD Projekt Red is pulling out all of the stops with Cyberpunk 2077, but whether this means it will match or surpass the acclaim and success of the publisher's previous titles remains to be seen.

There is currently no set release date for Cyberpunk 2077, but some sources have suggested the highly anticipated RPG will launch sometime this year.

Creative director Sebastian Stepian, who was also one of the lead writers on Cyberpunk 2077, recently left CD Projekt Red for Blizzard Entertainment, and raised a few questions about whether his departure would affect the upcoming sci-fi RPG.

Fortunately, the Polish studio, in a discussion with Stockwatch (as translated by Techspot), assured everyone that the development of Cyberpunk 2077 has not been impacted by Stepian's absence and revealed how many people are currently involve in the game's creation.

"His departure does not affect the pace of work on our latest title in any way. The team working on Cyberpunk 2077 already has over 400 people."
It's common for massive games like Cyberpunk 2077 to have a large amount of people working at one time, but it is worth noting that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt only had about 250 people working on the game at once.

Now, while having a vast amount of people involved in the creation of Cyberpunk 2077 isn't necessarily indicative of the game's quality, it does seemingly highlight how much the publisher wants to deliver on their promise that the RPG will be one of their most ambitious titles yet.

There's no denying that Cyberpunk 2077 will be one of the biggest global entertainment launches of the decade, as this new CD Projekt Red game is arguably as intriguing as Red Dead Redemption 2. As a reminder, the Warsaw-based studio is responsible for the Witcher trilogy, including two of the best-reviewed RPG games of all-time: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

To celebrate CBP Red's past and future achievements, Sony has released four extended videos, each spotlighting a different game made but the renowned Polish team, starting with their origins and 2007's The Witcher, later moving onto its acclaimed and best-selling sequels, two spin-offs (GWENT: The Witcher Card Game and Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales), concluding with Cyberpunk 2077.

While Cyberpunk 2077's release date hasn't been announced just yet, we know that CDP Red will showcase their upcoming video game at this year's E3, so there's a chance it will be finally revealed relatively soon. E3 2019 will be held June 11-13 in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Be sure to learn more about CD Projekt Red's history and future in the aforementioned series below:

During the company's annual investor's meeting to review year-end profit margins (it was a good year for the company, despite no major releases), CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński stated that this year's E3 would be the most important in the company's history.

They also announced that they've acquired a new building next to their existing HQ in Warsaw, Poland that would allow them to hire an additional 250-350 developers. Whatever CD Projekt Red is cooking up, it's going to be big!

You can check out the full meeting below, courtesy of YouTube.

Speculation is now running rampant about whether this year's E3 will see Cyberpunk 2077 given a firm release date, the reveal of the studio's second AAA game or both. It's definitely restoring some of the hype for this year's LA-based video game convention after Sony announced they would be skipping the event for the first time ever.

E3 will run from June 11–13, 2019 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
