Damien Chazelle's "La La Land" (Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone?)

That trailer was a lot more light hearted than I thought it would be from earlier promos.

I envision after the release of Whiplash, Chazelle had an original broadway musical screenplay and attempted to give it to major theater owners. And in return, they said, “we know how much you were successful with Whiplash, but you better rush or drag this somewhere else.” And Chazelle replying, “screw you guys I’m going to make a movie out of this,” only for it to be one of the most originally authentic musicals released since Disney’s Newsies.

I hope this gets a wide release very soon.

SUCH a great movie. Charming, fun and it features some great music. Definitely worth checking out once it's out wherever you are.

Weekend official number is $881,104 for a PTA of $176,221. That puts LLL #10 all time OW PTA.
That ranking is even a bit misleading since LLL was in 5 theaters while 7 of the 9 movies ahead of it were in just
1 (5) or 2 (2) theaters.
Looking at the list Pocahontas at #
2 is the most impressive, over a $448k PTA from 6 theaters.

Hopefully I can see it this weekend.

The PTA has held up very well in the first expansion, $4.02 million in 200 theaters for a PTA of 20,100.

It damn well better be showing here next weekend, I'm still bummed we didn't get it in at least one of the "artsy" theaters this weekend.

This finally opens here today as it has expanded to 731 theaters. I have my ticket, just 4 1/2 hours until it starts.

Saturday estimates for the top ten are out and most have the expected -30% (give or take a bit) x-mas eve drops, except LLL, which has a very odd +12% increase.
Movies almost always drop on x-mas eve, theaters close early and have fewer evening shows and people tend to stay home that evening.
Today's number should be interesting as X-mas day is always very busy and LLL theater count goes from 200 to 731.

My theater didn't get it today :( Hopefully next week.

This is the best movie I've seen all year. I only have two (minor) issues with it: the movie doesn't really get going until we're introduced to Ryan Gosling's character (which takes 10 or 15 minutes) and the final musical number is just a hair too long (it felt a little indulgent). But yeah, it's a 10/10 movie.

In terms of sound quality, what is the best place in Los Angeles to see LaLaLand?

Another strong hold for LLL, best hold in the top ten.

La La Land (Lionsgate) 740 /$2.5M Wed (-5%) /Total: $22.2M/ Wk 3

Lionsgate really should have gone full wide on the 16th or the 21st rather than Jan. 6, it's putting up the same numbers that some movies with 4x the theaters are.
I guess they are counting on the awards season boost.

I really liked this movie but I didn't fall in love with it like I did with Whiplash, it's still a 9/10.

I want to see this but I'm hearing people close to me say it's nothing special. My ex said it was disappointing and that none of the musical numbers are that memorable.

If this is all true then this movie will win Best Picture. It's a movie about Hollywood most of all and if you look at the past five years, you'll see a pattern.

The opening is definitely memorable (just on the technical aspects alone) and the songs will stick with you after leave the theater.

The songs definitely stick with you.
I also like that they used actors who are good, but not professional singers and you hear their real voices rather than something they autotune the hell out of, it somehow fits the movie better.
I'm especially impressed with Gosling learning to play piano for the role, and very well too, that couldn't have been easy.

I had the luxury of seeing this at the Middleburg Film Festival back in October and nothing has been able to knock it from my #1 spot for best film of the year since. I can't wait to go see it again tomorrow.

Finally saw this film today and it's AMAZING. This is one of those films that reminds you why you love this medium so much.

Great musical numbers, great cinematography, incredible acting.
