yes, through out this season there have been subtle hints that Morty is getting darker/smarter

^I don't know how anyone can watch what Morty did to Ethan and come to any other conclusion than that he's becoming evil, or at least considerably darker.

I would say what he did to Ethan is not even the worst thing he's been party to in the last three seasons.

Keep in mind, remember what dimension Morty is currently living in.

Especially this season, Morty has become very protective of his sister. Trying to warn her about the pitfalls of looking up to Rick and turning the gun on Rick when he felt his life was in danger. Then not wanting to leave her in the Mad Max dimension. His retaliation against Ethan seems within of his character.
