Surprise! We’d thought that we wouldn’t see a new film from Danny Boyle for some time (and we won’t, but that is complicated and explained below) because he’s been directing his stage version of Frankenstein and has a couple of little things to plan for the 2012 London Olympics. But now he has announced plans to make a small thriller called Trance, which will shoot in September before he really has to dive full-time into the Olympic work. We just won’t see it until 2013.

Deadline relates that the film is about “an art heist gone wrong” and that it has the “dark, sexy, hard-edged tone of Boyle films like Shallow Grave and Trainspotting.”

No cast is announced yet, but the thought of Danny Boyle going back to some old thriller ground — and perhaps reining in his increasingly manic style just a tad — is something that gives me a thrill. Shallow Grave is fairly raw and wild, and I don’t expect a replication of that film, nor would I want one. But something in that vein that uses what he’s learned and developed in the 15-plus years since? That I do want to see.

Talks are ongoing with Fox Searchlight and Pathe to fund and distribute the film, and given the relationship and deal Danny Boyle has with Fox Searchlight, I’d guess it’s pretty much a lock that we’ll see the company’s logo on Trance in 2013.

Wait, 2013? Right — because after the primary shoot is done for Trance, he’ll have to work on the Olympics well into 2012. So the film will be shot this year, then cut and finished in fall of 2012, and released in 2013. It’s a weird process, and I’ll be curious to see if he can edit the film, after taking nearly a year off from it, without wanting to go back and do a lot of extra/new shooting.

This sounds great! Danny Boyle rocks.

Boyle and the concept of it having a tone similar to his early works sounds great.

Indeed, especially Trainspotting for me personally, i love that movie.

Michael Fassbender is in talks for a role in the film, there's more plot details also in the article. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/michael-fassbender-talks-join-danny-186281

An assistant at an auction house masterminds the heist and teams up with a gang of thieves, but suffers a blow to the head and wakes up with amnesia. He is the only one who knows where the painting’s location is and after his continued failure to remember, the gang begins to suspect duplicity on his part and hire a female hypnotist to get into his brain.

If a deal is closed, Fassbender would play the shady leader of the gang who partners with the assistant.

Would be good if he join, but I wonder if there will be some scheduling conflicts with Prometheus though, also the plot sounds great.

Hopefully Fassbender signs on-board so he can add Boyle among the great directors he have worked with such as Tarantino, Scott, Cronenberg, Soderbergh and Vaughn.

Rosario Dawson & Vicent Cassel Join Cast
EXCLUSIVE: Rosario Dawson has won the hotly contested female lead in the Danny Boyle-directed Fox Searchlight drama Trance. She is poised to join James McAvoy and Vincent Cassel who are both in negotiations to play the male leads in a film that will start production in September. McAvoy's in talks to play the inside man in an art heist that goes wrong. He runs afoul of an accomplice (Cassel) and Dawson will play a woman who develops an unusual relationship with both men in a thriller that is as moderately budget and edgy as Shallow Grave and Trainspotting.

Deadline was first to reveal Trance in early May, when Boyle decided to work in a followup to 127 Hours even as he prepares to direct the opening ceremonies of next summer's Olympics in London. He's re-teaming with frequent producing collaborator Christian Colson. They will shoot the movie in the fall in London, put it on a shelf while Boyle devotes himself to the Olympics beginning in January. When the games are over, Boyle will start cutting the film in August, 2012 with the goal of having the picture ready for Fox Searchlight to release it in March, 2013.

Dawson is currently starring alongside Kevin James in Zookeeper; McAvoy just starred in X-Men: First Class and is filming Welcome to the Punch and Cassel, most recently seen in Black Swan, next stars in A Dangerous Method, reteaming him with Eastern Promises director David Cronenberg. Dawson's repped by CAA and Untitled; McAvoy by UTA and UK-based Ruth Young of United Agents, and Cassel by CAA and France-based Adequat.

Finally my sweet Rosario is in a good movie. I've been worried for her career for a while.

This looks interesting.I might see this when it comes out.

Too bad Fassbender dropped out from this project. Anyway, I'm still interested to see this.

Yeah, I don't see how that is related. McAvoy didn't replace Fassbender, he dropped out due to scheduling conflict.

Really? I thought it was stated that McAvoy replaced Fassbender cause he had scheduling conflicts.

Nope, Fassbender was up for a completely different role (the one that Cassel is playing now).

A First Look at Danny Boyle's Trance
Source: USA Today
December 26, 2012

USA Today has published a sneak peek at director Danny Boyle's new thriller, Trance, starring James McAvoy (upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past), Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) and Rosario Dawson (upcoming Sin City: A Dame to Kill For).

The 2013 film is about an art heist gone wrong and is rated R for sexual content, graphic nudity, violence, some grisly images, and language.

Boyle gave the newspaper more details: "It begins like that. But it takes the idea of a stolen painting and develops into something sleeker and more psychological, with twists and turns... I wanted to do an updated noir, give it a contemporary spin in terms of emotion. Noir is usually cold. I wanted it to be more emotionally charged. It's the first time I put a woman at the heart of a movie."

He added that, much like his 1994 film Shallow Grave, the characters will operate inside their own bubble. "Their only point of reference is to each other. There are no outsiders."

Here's the official plot summary:

"Trance," directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire," "127 Hours") and co-written by Oscar-nominated long term collaborator John Hodge ("Shallow Grave," "Trainspotting") is a seductive and enigmatic thriller starring James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson.

Fine art auctioneer Simon (McAvoy), in league with a gang led by underworld boss Franck (Cassel), plots the audacious theft of a masterpiece by Goya from a major public auction. When Simon double-crosses the gang during the robbery, Franck retaliates violently and knocks him unconscious.

In the aftermath of the heist, Simon sticks stubbornly - and perhaps shrewdly - to his claim that the violent trauma has left him with no memory of where he stashed the artwork.

Unable to coerce the painting's location from Simon, Franck and his associates reluctantly join forces with a charismatic hypnotherapist (Dawson) in a bid to get him to talk. But as they journey deeper into Simon's jumbled psyche the boundaries between reality and hypnotic suggestion begin to blur and the stakes rise faster and far more dangerously than any of the players could have anticipated.

Rosario Dawson in a film ratd R for sexual content and graphic nudity? I approve.

I'm just happy sexy Rosario isn't in crazy kids movie. She's been doing a lot of crap lately, and I don't understand why.
