Universal Pictures Takes Dante's Inferno
Source: Variety November 2, 2008

Universal Pictures has won a bidding battle for an unreleased Electronic Arts video game that Variety says will be called "Dante's Inferno" by the time it hits the marketplace next year.

The agreement is the second the studio has made in recent weeks for an EA video game. The first one was "Army of Two," which has Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum) aboard to write the script and Scott Stuber to produce with EA.

Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham will produce with EA. EA Entertainment vice president Patrick J. O'Brien and game creator Jonathan Knight will be closely involved in the development of the film.

Both the "Dante's Inferno" game and movie involve a journey through the depths of hell.

ANyone else think Universal will ditch this project somewhere in the near future.
I'd love to see this movie getting made but when Uni is struggling to get a high profile game like Bioshock going and with the whole Halo debacle , i dunno if we're going to get to see this flick being made by Uni.

Most likely and I personally hope they do.

At first I thought it was going to be an adaptation of the book but when I heard it's going to be a movie based on a video game(which will most likely butcher the book) I think I'll pass.

It's a videogame. What did you expect ? Players thinking "wow , it's fun watching these guys talk all day. Screw HALO , this is teh best game evah ! " :oldrazz:

The game itself let's the player go down the levels of hell battling everyone o save his love.
It's one of those visual movies like 300. The story is paperthin but the visuals are what draw you.

Also i could've sworn i read somewhere that they really are making a proper Dante's Inferno movie.

Umm....no.

It might be cool visually but don't care for them to take a great book/story and, as you said, steroid it out and dumb it down to make it all badass like 300. I'm mainly talking about the movie, I do understand a game made very close to the original story wouldn't be much fun.

I'm just saying they should leave the movie idea alone.

Meh i'm interested :oldrazz:
But i don't think that this will see the light of day

Reasons probably are this movie just being too expensive. Universal has had some costly misfires in the past and i think now with new studio exec. being charge , they'll take a different approach in making new movies.

Can't wait for the animated feature, though. Some of the people involved in Dead Space: Downfall, and that movie was just fantastic.

The game looks derivative and the developers don't seem to "get" the source material, so I'd be surprised if this actually gets made into a live action movie. The game has actually become the butt of quite a few jokes in the video game community, so it's not off to a good start in terms of reputation and it's not even out yet.

At first I thought they meant the poem Dante's Inferno....which would actually be pretty cool and unique to make a movie off of.

Since the video game is nothing like the poem, they should just make a movie based off the poem.

‘Evil Dead’s Fede Alvarez Going To Hell-m Universal’s ‘Dante’s Inferno’

EXCLUSIVE: Fede Alvarez, the Uruguayan helmer who went from the statement-making short Panic Attack to the Evil Dead remake, is in talks to direct Dante’s Inferno. Universal Pictures is setting him to helm the live action adaptation of the Electronic Arts video game, which is rooted in the famous literary work. Former Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing with EA Entertainment vice president Patrick O’Brien. The protagonist, Dante Aligheri is a knight who with the help of the poet Virgil ventures into the nine rings of hell to rescue his beloved Beatrice. In the process, he becomes an unwitting pawn in an ancient war between heaven and hell. Rights to the video game were won by Universal several years ago in a bidding battle. The game was released in 2010 for Xbox and PlayStation. Jay Basu is the most recent writer of the script, with Bruce McKenna writing the earlier draft.

Newman and Abraham most recently completed the MGM/Sony Robocop remake and O’Brien is producing the DreamWorks pic Need For Speed based on another EA title. Kristel Laiblin is exec producing Dante’s Inferno and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum and Anikah McLaren are supervising for the studio. CAA, Anonymous Content and Karl Austen rep Alvarez. UTA reps EA and Basu.

Would rather see him do Doctor Strange.

I loved the game, this is one of the biggest surprises out there! I never thought this game could get new life into it. :) Hopefully the game gets a sequel or a spin-off or something. I really liked what Visceral did.

Keyword, here... animated. This will be a live-action adaptation. Speaking of which, liked the game and the animated movie was fantastic. I'll be watching this one.

I think this will be stuck in...DEVELOPMENT HELL. waka waka waka.

Don't you mean hell noooo? :oldrazz:

But seriously, I didn't play the game much but I liked what I got to experience. The animated movie was great, though. Hope this version has the emotions from that movie intact.

What do people go to Hell for? Punishment!
