Dante's Inferno

I found it funny how many reviewers bash the story when we still got God of War getting higher story scores than plenty of other games.

EDIT: I just like to add how nitpicky Gamespot and Gametrailers are. They complain about 3/4 of the puzzles being out of pillars... Well the game does have like 4 puzzles in truth. Gametrailers complains about you needing to re-do the ugprades if you die before a checkpoint.... ITS THE SAME THING in God of War games! Sheesh it's like they try to find every little thing to bash this game.

Could that be bc God of War is a better game than Dante's Inferno?

Absolutely, but how does gameplay effect the story here? Really now heres the story of God of War 1 and Dante's Inferno and you can judge:
God of War 1:
- Game begins with Kratos jumping off a cliff, too exhausted to live on anymore.
- We cut back to weeks earlier, we find out he serves Athena in hopes to forget his sinful past.
- He hates Ares and is willing to kill him.
- Thruouth the game we learn more about his past, he was too prideful and thus became a slave to Ares in exchange for victory when he was about to lose to the Barbarians.
- We learn that the reason he's the White Ghost of Sparta is because he killed his own family, and now his death family's ashes are on his body forever.
- Ares reveals he wanted the family out of the way so Kratos can become the perfect killing machine, he succeeded but gets killed.
- Kratos becomes the new God of War.

Okay here's the story of Dante. (all the spoilers are here, reply to them with spoiler tags aswell please or blackout)
- Since childhood abuse by his cruel father, believed his mother died of fever.
- Became more and more like his father, a sinner.
- Promised to forsake the desires of flesh for Beatrice. Goes to war for 3 years.
- Gets drunk and whatnot, because the Bishop promised that all sins would be absolved.
- Rapes a woman more or less, in exchange she and her brother gets freed.
- Kills the prisoners because they we're heretics.
- We learn that the person who killed Dante's Father and Beatrice wasn't the brother of the woman Dante raped, but her husband.
- Dante faces his own father in the 4th circle of Hell.
- Dante finds out his mother didn't die of fever but hanged herself due to all the abuse Dante's father gave him.
- We learn that Francesco, the brother of Beatrice and whom Dante promised to protect took the blame from Dante's prison murders, thus Dante is a traitor and belongs to the lowest circle of Hell.
- Lucifer didn't care for Beatrice at all, but she was a bait for Dante's dark soul to free Lucifer from his prison.
- At the very end of the game, we find out that Dante infact did die at the beginning of the game, but with the souls that Dante absolved thru his journey to hell, these souls (and god) once more prison Lucifer and Dante is granted a redemption.
- Game ends with Dante moving towards the purgatory, but Lucifer actually did manage to escape his prison, and is following Dante towards the Purgatory himself

So really now, even tho God of War does have better gameplay, how should this effect the story? It's the same thing with Darksiders. That game has a great story, yet God of War gets better scores in the story segment. Which is what i'm whining here. Not the overall score.

I have not played Dantes Inferno so I can not really comment on it, but story score isnt simply about what the story is. It also has to do with how its presented, voice acted, any special techniques used to push it forward etc... Creative and interesting plot twists add to a story score whereas repetitive and predictable plot points would hurt it. Is the story engaging, intriguiging and make you want to continue to play (and in cases despite subpar gameplay)? These are important questions to consider when judging it. The presentation of the story in GoW was great when it came out. The developers did a good job at weaving it into the gameplay and didnt stick out as a seperate entity.

Besides what sites are giving out story scores? With the exception of Gametrailers, thats not something I usually see.

Dante's Inferno story is told via CGI cutscnees (theres 4 of them), animated flashbacks and ingame cutscenes. It's a very linear story where the conclusion happens in the last ring of Hell. I found it interesting because he's trying to redeem himself but the more the player descends to hell the more you learn what kind of an ******* he truly is. Now some reviewers found this to making the character more dislikeable, but i just found it all the more sadder how this guy ****ed up his life simply because he believed in the Bishop's absolvemenents and became *******.

Bought this game at a midnight release and played till almost 2am. Loving it so far and can't wait to get home today.

Sometimes I think people just go overboard when trying to hate a game, reviewers included.

Answer me these few questions:

Does this game have a lot of action?

Will this game hold a person over uhtil GoW III?

If the answer is yes to both of those questions....I'm not sure why gamers...at least action game fans wouldn't want to play it.

OoOoOoOOoH! It's a GoW ripoff! ...So? Banjo-Kazooie was pretty much Mario 64 and people STILL rave about that game. Crash Kart Racing or whatever was a Mario Kart clone for the PSX...but it was STILL a good kart racer.

Bottom line is this: As long as the game is entertaining...I really don't care WHAT it rips off, and if it just so happens to rip off a game I already like I would think that would be a plus.

Is the action fun though? I can think of games that have a lot of action but it's incredibly repetitive and gets boring after awhile.

And for the latter, is it worth spending $60 now just to play something until another game comes out? Not even taking into account the actual length of the game.

Despite the crummy reviews, I want to play this. I'm interested enough in the story that I want to know what happens and it looks playable. But I'm not going to buy it now just to hold me off until something else comes out. There's plenty of other games I haven't played that I can go to.

I absolutely love Banjo Kazooie but it was as much a rip off of Mario 64 as any other 3D platformer made that generation. There was a LOT that made it different.

I think the review on Destructoid was a pretty awesome and well written review. They didn't seem angry that the game is loosely based off the poem...which, many reviews complain about...I could really careless. The reviewed it as an action game which I'm glad they did.

Does the game deserve a 9? Who knows, I haven't played it past the demo...but I doubt it deserves as low as a 6.5 either.

You guys focus too much on the reviews and the opinions of others.

lol, that's just it...the destructoid review was the only REAL review I read for it..mainly because I just like the site. I don't really trust ANY review site to be honest, the big ones (IGN, GameSpot, GameInformer, ect) will review hyped games well (FFXIII being one, you watch) and rip others to shreds.

I like to read what the GAMERS have to say about a game...not what someone that's getting paid to review a game, and probably getting lots of cool free stuff from major game companies...

That's how it should be done.

I don't think the game deserves a 9/10 but like 7.5 or 8.0 easily. You can see that the last Hell rings are getting short and Fraud was rather uninspiring with just 10 challanges. ofcourse it didn't ruin my experience or anything.

Still the gametrailers had complaiments like: If you upgrade your moves and die before a checkpoint, you need to re-buy the upgrades.... ITS THE SAME IN GOD OF WAR! Sheesh!

Not to mention all games that have DLC already confirmed get mentioned in reviews... Yet all reviewes ignore to mention to the buyers that Dante's Inferno is getting DLC. >_> I hope you guys who bought the game will enjoy it as much as i did. I found it a decent action flick with a cool story that has gotten me interested into the Poem.

Wow...they seriously said "If you upgrade your moves and die before a checkpoint, you need to do it again!"

Seriously? What game DON'T you do that in? Have they ever played an old school "save point" RPG? I remember leveling up, adding matira, ect in FF 7...dying before I made it to a save and having to do it allll over again...and like you said, same happens in GoW..

That's why I don't trust ANY game review.

Word.

I'm loving this game, right now I just entered Gluttony and about to fight the Cerberus.

And since I don't a PS3, this is my "GoW III"

I did that last night. That **** was crazy. The gluttony level is gross.

The animated movie is pretty good, tho i freaking hated the last anime visual style.

The anime movie had some differences on the story and it actually had more support characters from the Poem too! It also had Steven Blum as Lucifer and Mark Hamill is voicing a certain character aswell. : ) I'd check it out if you can rent it somewhere.

I'm enjoying this game, its got its flaws, but what game hasnt? It's certainly a lot of fun, and the art design is fantastic. My only real complaint is the excrutiating checkpoints. Kiling a huge wave of enemies and then dying because of a crappy jump and then starting all over is quite frustrating, but its certainly not enough to put me off the game. Trying to get the 666 hit combo is proving pretty hard too, any pointers? Closest I've got to is 450.

Anyone got any tips and tricks how to beat Lucifer in hardest mode? =(

Some Saint Lucia design art from Facebook:

This game is f****** HARD! I've only been playing for a few hours, and I cant count the number of times I've died....

Now I'm stuck on a stupid friggin rope swing

I'm probably never going to buy this game, but I just want to know if the final section where you find Lucifer, is it all icy like in the poem or is it standard fire/hell?
