Dante's Inferno

Its pretty easy to see how this will be turned into a trilogy if the first film is successful.

I don't think you can make a property like this a trilogy. It's not Lord of the Rings. It'd be like making Paradise Lost a trilogy.

Have you ever read the poem? It's split into three parts. This film just deals with Inferno. That leaves them with Purgatorio and Paradiso for films 2 and 3.

I'll definitely get interested if they get Alex Proyas or Vincenzo Natali.

So how do you turn it into a movie and actually make it watchable? I have read the poem. And it's not a poem you can adapt into a Pirates of the Caribbean type franchise.

Wasn't Universal Studios planning to adapt EA's Dante's Inferno into a movie? Will we have two Dante's Inferno movies competing each other like we had White House Down and Olympus has Fallen? :hmr:

That EA game is never going to get made into a movie.

Well the first movie is about Dante trying to save the woman he loves from Hell. That's a story that everyone can relate to.

And the poem involves Dante traveling through three fantastical worlds filled with supernatural creatures and beings and foes. That's perfect setting for a fantasy film.

But who says it needs to be a POTC type franchise? The poem isn't anything like POTC nor does a trilogy adapted from it need to be.

And this won't the first time Inferno has been put on film. Vincent Ward's What Dreams May Come which is based on Richard Matheson's book uses a lot of imagery and ideas from Inferno.

That's the video game story, not the poem. In the poem she is actually an angel who helps Dante get guidance through hell.

But that's the thing. They aren't really foes. Dante isn't going on some journey defeat Satan or save anyone. He's going on a journey to find God and enlightenment. Unless you are going the video game route.

Because Pirates of the Caribbean is like the prototypical four quadrant franchise. When you talk about franchise, that's the type of franchise a studio wants to build with an IP. If you are going to spend hundreds of millions turning The Divine Comedy into a franchise, a studio will want to double the returns.

How do you make that material into something moviegoing audiences will want to see over and over again onscreen? Pirates of the Carribbean gave you an action fantasy story with kooky characters, a romance between two fresh faced younger actors, etc.

And this won't the first time Inferno has been put on film. Vincent Ward's What Dreams May Come which is based on Richard Matheson's book uses a lot of imagery and ideas from Inferno.

Not really the best of examples. That's not exactly a franchise picture either.

I think it's a damn shame one of the many director legends from back in the day never made an adaption of this. Black/white and practical effects. Hnnngh.
